Washington’s Floyd Baking his Way to San Antonio

Every year the top 500 underclassmen High School Football players get invited down to San Antonio, Texas to take part in the US Army Nation Combine in which they get show off their skills the some of big names in College Football. This year the Philadelphia region is going to be well represented at Nation Combine as according Football University’s Coach Bret Cooper at least six players from the Philadelphia region will get the chance to show off their skills. One of them is George Washington High School’s 6 foot 4 inch 300 pound Junior Sharrif Floyd. Floyd plays Tackle and Defensive Tackle for the Eagles who sent a shockwaves through Philadelphia on Saturday when they knocked off the heavily favorite LaSalle Explorers 23-14 in the PIAA District XII AAAA Championship. Floyd played a big role the victory as his block of a Mike Donohoe punt that flew out of the end-zone causing a safety to ensure the victory. When Floyd arrives down in San Antonio he can hold his head high know that he earned way his down there.

Why you ask? Well there’s a fifth teen hundred dollar entry fee. That’s where school counselor and Play It Smart Foundation coordinator Dawn Seeger enters the picture. The Play It Smart Foundation is sponsored by the National Football Foundation and its Seeger’s job is to make sure that players skill on the field and academically.

So Three weeks when Floyd brought the letter inviting him to the combine and stated that he didn’t have the money to go. Seeger approached school principal Kathy Murphy and Murphy gave her all the support she needed. Seeger thought it was an extremely great opportunity to be a part of a prestigious invitation and wanted to help so for the pass two Wednesdays spent his time in his first period Culinary class baking cookies and brownies with the Special-Ed kids at school. The next morning the cookies and brownies are sold with all the money going to help Floyd achieve his goal of getting down to San Antonio. To further help Floyd there was a benefit held at O’Mares on Sunday during the Philadelphia Eagles Baltimore Ravens game. So far Floyd as raised about five hundred dollars.

When asked to describe Floyd off the field Seeger responded “Sharrif is very modest, humble individual who worries not about himself but his teammates, coaches and even the special ed kids that look up to him.” Floyd feels the same way about Seeger calling her “She (Seeger) cares about us more then anybody she worries about college, grades a lot and we care for her more than anything. Floyd would go on to call Ms. Seeger the team mom.
