St. Joseph Prep’s Defense Shuts Down O’Hara

PLYMOUTH MEETING PA: Heading into Friday nights Philadelphia Catholic League AAAA match-up with arch-rival St Joseph Prep Hawks the Cardinal O’Hara Lions defense possessed a defense that is capable of shutting down any offense, but on this night it was the Hawks defense that stole the show has the shut down the Lions on their way to a 34-0 victory in front of nation audience on ESPN U

 

The Hawks who improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in League play wasted little time getting on the broad has they drove down on the opening drive and punched in when Sr. QB Mark Giubilato who spend his freshman year at O’Hara bootlegged in from five yards. The extra point by Kurt Skalamera was good giving the Hawks the 7-0 lead.” It was cool because of all my buddies are over there.” Is how Giubilato responded when asked about beating the team he spend time with has a freshman.

 

 

The Hawks would next get on the broad again by Giubilato who let his arm do the work has he hooked up with SR Dan Turner from 32 yards out. Skalamera would add the extra point giving the Hawks the early 14-0 lead.

 

It would be the Hawks special teams that would extend the Hawks lead to 21-0 when Sr. Mike Yeager busted through the Lions Punt coverage on his way to a 65 yard touchdown. Skalamera added the extra point. Yeager would also add 98 yards on 14 carries.

 

“Defense played great” is how Hawks head coach Gil Brooks would describe his defensive effort which held the Lions rushing attack who was with the services of their top two rushers in Cory Brown and Evan Higgins would were sideline due to injuries “they did a great job getting after the QB” Brooks added. The defense was led by Mike Pinciotti, Mike Pereira, Steve O’Hara whose cousin Dan plays for the Lions.

 

Jr. RB Garrett Compton would make the 28 when he broke through the Lions defense and then raced down the sideline on his way to a 78 yard touchdown. Skalamera would add the extra point to extend the lead to 28-0.

Mike Labor would cap the scoring with his 6 yard plunge. The extra point was missed giving the Hawks the 34-0 lead.

Up next for the Hawks is the Monsignor Bonner Friars on Saturday evening at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School with kickoff schedule for 7 pm. While the Lions 7-1(3-1) will look to get back on the winning side when they host the Crusaders of Father Judge next Saturday afternoon on they homecoming game. The game will be televised on CN8 with kickoff schedule for 1 pm at Springfield Delco High School

   St. Joe’s was dynamite. It’s a shame O’Hara was not at full strength, but these things happen in football. Coach Algeo had better come up with a better game plan than he had tonight. Keep your head up O’Hara!!!
