District 11 has produced a recent string of Division-1 quarterbacks, like Dan Persa, DJ Lenehan and Tyler Smith. That string could continue this year with Whitehall quarterback Chris Polony.

Polony has generated interest from five Division-1 programs, according to his profile on Rivals.com. Polony is one of the taller quarterback prospects in PA’s 2011 recruiting class, checking in at 6’3.

UCONN, Maryland, Pitt, Rutgers and Virginia have all expressed interest in Whitehall’s senior-to-be. The fact that Maryland is showing interest in Polony, who is listed as a pro-style quarterback, is no surprise. Maryland has landed three quarterback prospects from Pennsylvania since the turn of the millennium – Jordan Steffy (Conestoga Valley); C.J. Brown (Seneca Valley) and Tyler Smith (Wilson Area).

Polony totaled over 1,700 yards of offense for the Zephyrs last season, throwing for 1,420 yards and 14 touchdowns while adding 307 yards and eight touchdowns rushing. Polony completed just over 50 percent of his passes, averaging 12.9 yards per completion and 4.1 yards per carry.

Polony has thrown for 2,031 yards in his career. He threw for 611 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore, playing in Whitehall’s final seven games of the 2008 season. Whitehall saw three different players amass 300+ yards passing for the 2008 season.

After a 2-4 start to the season, Whitehall won five of its final six games, including the Eastern Conference “AAAA” championship, 35-24, over Emmaus. In the two EC playoff games, Whitehall averaged 38.5 points per game.

Whitehall finished 7-5 last year, averaging 26.5 points per game.
