Last year, Bishop McDevitt came within one point of winning their second state title, a 28-27 loss to Allentown Central Catholic in a PIAA Class 3A championship game.

Gone from last year’s team is All-State Quarterback Matt Johnson and running back Jameel Poteat.

In 2011 Head Coach Jeff Weachter’s team is led by All-American candidate Defensive End Noah Spence. The 6-4, 245-pound Spence is arguably the number one prospect coming out of Pennsylvania this season.

On offense, Alec Werner has stepped right in and passed for 2,977 yards and 26 touchdowns. Werner’s favorite target is Brian Lemelle. The speedy wide receiver has caught 70 passes for 1,337 yards and 12 scores. Senior Shawn Seif has 833 yards and six scores to add balance to the passing game.

The Crusaders are deep at running back. The running attack is led by Rashad Lawson who has rushed for 825 yards and 14 scores. Freshman Andre Robinson is averaging 7.78 yards per carry and 14 touchdowns. Darnell Holland has 524 yards and eight scores.

As impressive as the offense is, the defense is equally impressive. It starts with Spence who has 85 total tackles. Last year he led with 22 sacks and has double digit sacks again this season. They are deep at linebacker as well. Brock Dean has 73 total tackles and Tariq Spence has 84 total tackles. Allen Holman leads the team with 92 tackles.

Bishop McDevitt is coming off a impressive win over Red Land 42-7 and has outscored their opponents in the District 3 Class 3A playoffs 161-42. This Friday night they play Lampeter-Strasburg (12-1) for a chance to win back-to-back District titles.

One thing for sure, Bishop McDevitt has one goal, to hoist the gold trophy.
