CONCORD: After having reached the District 1 AAA playoffs for the past two seasons the Cougars of Springfield Delaware County were still looking for a win that would put the rest of the Central League on notice. On Friday night at Moe DeFrank the Cougars got that victory by knocking of the Jaguars of Garnet Valley on their home turf by a score of 35-25. “We were under the radar for teams to actually take us serious we need a moment like this.” a joyful Cougars head coach Tom Kline said.

Kline added that he didn’t think it was an upset that Cougars won saying “All week people would talk to us saying that for us to win it would have to be a big upset but we didn’t feel that way.”

The Cougars wasted little time jumping on the Jaguars as on the first play from scrimmage following an failed onside kick QB Cam Durham and was off to the races for 54 yard touchdown. Brad Lord would add the extra point giving the Cougars the 7-0 lead before fans got comfortable in their seats.

On the next Cougars drive Mike Dougherty would tack on to the lead with a 1 yard touchdown run to give the Cougars the 14-0 lead.

From their the Cougars defense under the direction of Defensive Coordinator Chris Britton took over and held the powerful Jaguar defense at bay. Dougherty dominated the first half amassing 12 of his team high 14 tackles. The Cougars also recieved soild play from linebacker Adam Krauter(9), lineman Dan Ketler(11) and defensive back Tony Roberts (8).

The Jaguars finally cracked the Cougars defense in the second half when Jordyn Bennett hauled in a 32 yard touchdown pass from Ryan Corkery. Corkery would farther cut into the Cougars lead with his 13 yard touchdown plunge. The extra point was blocked and the Cougars held a silm 14-13 lead. Durham added to the Cougars lead with 41 yard touchdown run.

In the fourth quarter, the Jaguars again cutted into the lead when Corkery connected with Wellington Zaza for a 42 yard touchdown run. A bad snap resulted in a failed two point conversion giving the Cougars the 21-19 lead.

But, the Cougars would responded with a 10 yard plunge by Colin Braconnier. However once the Jaguars responded with another Corkery run this one from 3 yards out. The extra point was blocked for the second time by Zach Young. For the game Corkery finished with 152 yards rushing and 124 yards passing.

Durham extended the lead with a highlight reel 61 yard TD run. Krauter put the final nail in the Jaguars coffin with an interception.

Next week the Cougars will look to remain perfect in the Central League play when they host the Red Raiders of Radnor Friday night at 7 pm. The Jaguars will look to get back on the winning track when they host the Ridley Green Raiders in another key Central League showdown Friday night at 7.

  1. Joe Stokes says:

    Good article.

Was at the game and it was nice to see the Cougars recover from all their fumbles.

They have two OT wins this year and except for Ridley they may win out.

  2. James Loney says:

Good thing they didn’t mention much of the horrendous first half for GV….That game was just devasting to watch…They better be ready for Ridley next week or they are going to become a bust.
