Experienced Penn Wood Core Looks to Turn Close Calls Into Wins

Penn Wood enters the 2026 season determined to turn experience into progress.

The Patriots finished 1-9 last fall, but the record does not tell the entire story. Penn Wood opened the season with a 40-32 victory over Norristown and later came within three points of both Maret School and Interboro. The Patriots also showed offensive flashes against Jersey Shore and Chichester, giving the coaching staff evidence that improvement is possible.

Head coach Darren Ryals now welcomes back a substantial group of experienced players on both sides of the football.

Penn Wood returns eight offensive starters and eight defensive starters, including several seniors who gained valuable experience during a difficult season. Sheldon Hannible returns as one of the team’s most versatile athletes, while Rich Vann, Jaiden Smith and Xavier McDuffie headline a defense that should benefit from a full year in the system.

The Patriots must replace quarterback Nasir Serrano, receiver and defensive back Haji Ali and defensive end Samson Krai, but the overall roster is more experienced and deeper than it was a year ago.

That depth could be especially important on special teams, where Penn Wood expects more players to contribute without exhausting its top starters.

The Patriots still have plenty to prove. They must become more consistent offensively, protect the football and improve defensively on third down. However, the returning experience gives Penn Wood a stronger foundation entering Ryals’ next season.

Hannible Gives Penn Wood a Versatile Offensive Weapon

Senior athlete Sheldon Hannible will be one of the most important players in Penn Wood’s offense.

Hannible contributed as a runner, passer and receiver during seven games last season. He rushed 72 times for 279 yards, completed 11 of 20 passes for 285 yards and two touchdowns and caught 15 passes for 306 yards.

He scored five offensive touchdowns and finished with 1,154 all-purpose yards when his defensive and special teams contributions were included.

Those numbers demonstrate the different ways Penn Wood can use him.

Hannible can line up in the backfield, take snaps, work from the slot or create explosive plays after the catch. His versatility allows the coaching staff to identify favorable matchups and move him around the formation.

That flexibility will be especially important as Penn Wood replaces Serrano at quarterback.

The Patriots do not need Hannible to remain in one role. They need to find ways to consistently put the football in his hands.

Penn Wood’s offensive outlook is based on creating matchups that place its best athletes in positions to succeed. Hannible is the clearest example of that philosophy.

Quarterback Position Must Be Settled

Replacing Serrano will be one of the most important tasks of preseason camp.

Penn Wood needs a quarterback capable of distributing the football, making smart decisions and operating a balanced offense.

Hannible has experience throwing the ball, but the coaching staff may also evaluate other candidates before determining the best arrangement.

The Patriots want the outcome of games in the hands of their playmakers, but that does not mean forcing the football into difficult situations.

Protecting the ball will be one of the offense’s biggest priorities.

Turnovers can quickly erase positive drives and place added pressure on the defense. A developing quarterback must understand when to take a chance and when to protect possession.

The position battle could also affect how Penn Wood uses Hannible. If another player emerges as the primary quarterback, Hannible can become a full-time matchup problem at running back, receiver or slot. If Hannible takes significant snaps, the offense can use his mobility to create additional options in the running game.

Frazier and Smith Bring Power to the Backfield

Junior Sean Frazier returns after rushing for 200 yards last season.

At 5-foot-9 and 205 pounds, Frazier gives Penn Wood a physical runner capable of working between the tackles.

Senior linebacker and fullback Jaiden Smith also contributed offensively, carrying 47 times for 200 yards.

Together, Frazier and Smith give the Patriots two powerful options in the backfield.

Penn Wood wants a balanced offensive attack, and establishing the run will be essential to achieving that goal.

A dependable ground game would help the new quarterback, keep the offense out of difficult third-down situations and allow the Patriots to control the tempo.

The coaching staff can also use Hannible as a change-of-pace option, giving the offense a combination of power and speed.

Vann Provides a Proven Tight End

Senior Rich Vann returns as an important two-way contributor.

Vann caught seven passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns last season, averaging more than 17 yards per reception.

At 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds, he gives Penn Wood a physical target at tight end.

Vann can work over the middle, provide a reliable option in the red zone and contribute as a blocker in the running game.

His ability to make plays downfield from the tight end position can create problems for opposing defenses. Linebackers may struggle to cover him in space, while defensive backs may have difficulty matching his size.

Vann’s experience will also help whichever player wins the quarterback job.

A dependable tight end can become a young quarterback’s best option on third downs and play-action passes.

Nesbitt Leads Returning Receivers

Junior Cameron Nesbitt returns at wide receiver after gaining important varsity experience.

Penn Wood must replace Ali, one of last season’s key two-way players, so Nesbitt has an opportunity to take on a larger role.

The Patriots need receivers who can stretch the field, block on the perimeter and create yards after the catch.

Hannible will likely see snaps at receiver as well, but Penn Wood cannot depend entirely on one player.

Additional receivers must emerge throughout camp.

The offense’s success will depend on spreading the football among Vann, Nesbitt, Hannible and the running backs. If several players become legitimate threats, defenses will have difficulty focusing on one area.

Offensive Line Returns Valuable Experience

Penn Wood brings back an experienced group along the offensive line.

Senior Isaiah McIntosh, senior Josiah Stewart, senior Jonathan Stewart and senior Juan Macklin all return.

Macklin provides excellent size at 6-foot-2 and 285 pounds. McIntosh, Josiah Stewart and Jonathan Stewart give the Patriots additional senior experience and physicality.

That continuity should become one of the offense’s greatest strengths.

The line will be responsible for helping the new quarterback settle into the offense and creating consistent running lanes for Frazier, Smith and Hannible.

Penn Wood must improve its ability to sustain drives.

The Patriots were shut out in four games last season and scored seven points or fewer in two additional contests. More consistent blocking and fewer negative plays would help the offense avoid long stretches without production.

The returning linemen have experienced those struggles and understand what must improve.

Balanced Offense Is the Goal

Penn Wood does not want to become one-dimensional.

The Patriots plan to build an offense capable of running the football while also taking advantage of favorable matchups in the passing game.

The exact balance may change each week.

Against some opponents, Penn Wood may rely more heavily on Frazier, Smith and Hannible in the running game. Other defenses may create opportunities for Vann and Nesbitt through the air.

Execution will determine whether the approach succeeds.

The Patriots must protect the football, avoid penalties and finish drives.

Penn Wood demonstrated last season that it can score. The Patriots produced 40 points against Norristown, 29 against Interboro and 20 against Jersey Shore.

The next step is producing consistently and avoiding long offensive droughts.

Defense Enters Second Year in the System

Penn Wood believes its defense should improve because the returning players now have a full year of experience in the system.

Last season required the Patriots to learn new responsibilities while competing against several strong opponents. The returning veterans should now play with greater confidence and less hesitation.

The defensive philosophy is aggressive.

Penn Wood wants to create chaos by playing fast, attacking the football and allowing its athletes to make plays.

That aggression must be paired with discipline.

Players must remain attentive to their assignments, communicate and avoid giving up explosive plays.

The Patriots also want to improve on third down. Getting off the field will be one of the defense’s biggest priorities.

McDuffie Gives Patriots an Edge Rusher

Senior Xavier McDuffie returns at defensive end and outside linebacker after recording 32 tackles and six sacks.

At 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, McDuffie has the size and length to create problems on the edge.

His six sacks demonstrate his ability to pressure quarterbacks and disrupt passing plays.

Penn Wood wants to play aggressively, and McDuffie gives the defense a proven player capable of creating negative plays.

He can rush from different alignments, set the edge against the run and force quarterbacks to move off their spot.

With Krai graduating, McDuffie becomes one of the most important leaders along the front.

Young Defensive Line Gains Valuable Experience

Sophomore Caiden Tann-Smith returns after gaining varsity experience on the defensive line.

At 5-foot-9 and 260 pounds, Tann-Smith provides size in the interior and should continue developing as a run defender.

Senior Richard Deshields also returns and should contribute along the defensive front or at linebacker.

The Patriots need this group to become more consistent.

Strong defensive line play would allow the linebackers to run freely and help Penn Wood improve against the run.

The front must control gaps, maintain leverage and create pressure without losing discipline.

Vann and Smith Lead Productive Linebackers

Vann returns at linebacker after recording 90 tackles, eight tackles for loss, two interceptions, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.

His production made him one of Penn Wood’s most important defenders last season.

Vann can defend the run, drop into coverage and create turnovers.

Smith also returns after recording 75 tackles, six tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.

Together, Vann and Smith give the Patriots an experienced and physical linebacker tandem.

Their leadership will be essential to Penn Wood’s defensive improvement.

They must communicate alignments, help younger players understand their roles and maintain discipline when the defense is playing aggressively.

The Patriots want their defenders running around and making plays, but that freedom only works when everyone understands the scheme.

Secondary Returns Multiple Starters

Penn Wood returns significant experience in the secondary.

Sophomore Zair Certaine is back at strong safety, while seniors Dallas Hairston and Willie Goll return at defensive back.

Hannible also contributed defensively, recording 13 tackles, a tackle for loss, an interception and a pass breakup.

The secondary must replace Ali, but the returning group has enough experience to improve.

Penn Wood faced several explosive offenses last season, including Jersey Shore, Chester and Plymouth-Whitemarsh. Those matchups provided difficult lessons but also gave the returning defensive backs valuable experience.

The Patriots need the secondary to communicate effectively, tackle in space and prevent long completions.

Creating takeaways will also be important.

The aggressive front and linebacker play should create hurried throws. The defensive backs must be ready to capitalize.

Third Downs Will Be a Major Focus

Penn Wood’s defensive outlook emphasizes getting off the field on third down.

A strong first- and second-down sequence can be erased if the defense allows a conversion.

The Patriots need improved awareness of down and distance, better communication and consistent tackling near the sticks.

Third-down success would help the entire team.

It would create better field position for the offense, reduce the number of snaps played by the defense and allow Penn Wood to control momentum.

The returning experience should help the Patriots execute those situations more effectively.

Improved Depth Could Help Special Teams

Penn Wood believes its improved depth can produce better special teams play.

Last season, limited depth may have forced several starters to handle heavy workloads on offense, defense and special teams.

A deeper roster gives the coaching staff more options.

The Patriots can use athletic players on coverage units while keeping their primary offensive and defensive contributors fresher.

Hannible is a proven return threat after producing 235 kickoff return yards and 50 punt return yards.

His ability to create explosive plays gives Penn Wood a dangerous option whenever opponents kick the ball to him.

The Patriots must also identify dependable kickers, punters and coverage players throughout camp.

Field position will be important for a team attempting to turn close losses into victories.

Players to Watch

Sheldon Hannible, Sr., ATH/DB/RET: Versatile playmaker who produced 1,154 all-purpose yards while contributing as a runner, passer, receiver, defender and returner.

Sean Frazier, Jr., RB: Powerful runner expected to take on a larger role in the backfield.

Cameron Nesbitt, Jr., WR: Returning receiver with an opportunity to become one of the offense’s primary targets.

Isaiah McIntosh, Sr., OL: Experienced lineman expected to help anchor the offense.

Juan Macklin, Sr., OL: Physical senior lineman who provides size and experience.

Zair Certaine, So., SS: Young defensive back who gained valuable varsity experience last season.

My thoughts on Penn Wood

Penn Wood enters 2026 with a clear opportunity to improve.

The Patriots return a large group of experienced starters, including several seniors who played major roles last season. That continuity should help the team compete with greater confidence and consistency.

The offense has multiple playmakers.

Hannible can impact the game from nearly any position. Frazier and Smith provide physical options in the running game, while Vann and Nesbitt give the passing attack experienced targets.

The offensive line also returns four senior starters, creating a strong foundation for the new quarterback.

The defense could make the greatest improvement.

Vann and Smith form a productive linebacker tandem, McDuffie provides pressure from the edge and the secondary returns multiple starters.

The Patriots now understand the defensive system and should be able to play faster.

The keys will be discipline, communication, tackling and third-down execution.

Penn Wood’s 2025 season included several difficult losses, but it also included moments that demonstrated the roster’s potential. The Patriots defeated Norristown, came within three points of Maret School and Interboro and scored 20 points against a Jersey Shore team that reached a district championship game.

Those performances showed Penn Wood can compete.

Now the Patriots must do it consistently.

If the offense protects the football, the defense creates takeaways and the improved depth strengthens special teams, Penn Wood has the potential to turn last season’s close losses into victories and become a much more competitive team in the Delaware Valley League.

2026 Offensive Outlook: Offensively, we must have a balanced attack to be successful. Our goal is to create favorable matchups that put our players in the best possible roles and situations to help our team succeed. Ultimately, we want the ball—and the outcome of the game—in the hands of our playmakers. When we execute, and protect the football, we give ourselves the best opportunity to win.

2026 Defensive Outlook: Our defense has a full year under the system, and that experience has given our players a much better understanding of what we’re trying to accomplish. Defensively, we want to create chaos by playing fast, being aggressive, and allowing our kids to run around and make plays.

To be successful, we have to stay disciplined, attentive, and relentless on every snap. Our key to success is playing together as one unit, communicating effectively, and getting off the field on third downs. If we can consistently execute in those areas, we’ll put ourselves in a great position to be successful.

2026 Special Teams Outlook: We have improved our team depth and hopefully this will lead to our improvement in Special Teams.
