Mount Carmel is back in the spotlight

Few schools in Pennsylvania have the rich history like Mount Carmel does. Mount Carmel made history this year winning their 800th win against Shikellamy 35-14 on Oct. 21st. Their wins are ranked number one in PA.

Mount Carmel’s football team has captured the PIAA Class 2A title five times in 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002 since the playoffs have started in 1988.

Their head coach knows what winning means in Mount Carmel. Head Football Coach Carmen DeFrancesco came back to coach his alma mater in 2010.  In his first year back his team went 8-4.

But before he was the head coach there were coaches like Mike Terry (1947-1961), Dave”Whitey” Williams (1993-1999) and Michael Brennan (2000-2009). But the most successful coach in Mount Carmel history was Joe “Jazz” Diminick (1962-1992). DeFrancesco played for the legendary coach from 1967-1970. His teams went 44-1 during the years he played.

The current Red Tornadoes are 12-1 and are playing in the first round of the Class 2A State Playoffs. This season they have won six games in a row twice, including a current six game win streak which they hope will reach nine games at the end of the year. This means they would host the gold trophy again for the sixth time in Hershey.

Mount Carmel is led by two 1,000 yard runners. Meyrick Lamb who has rushed for 1,339 yards and 17 touchdowns so far this season and Cody Shustack rushed for 1,039 yards and 14 scores. When Zach Wasilewski isn’t handing the ball off he is throwing to Jacob Kleman or Brain McFadden.

Up next for the Red Tornadoes is Lancaster Catholic (13-0). The two teams have met three times and Lancaster Catholic has won all three games. The latest meeting was in 2008 and they played a home-and-home series in 2006 and 2007.

If Mount Carmel is going to win it will be with their “Red Death” defense. Heavy hitters Shustack and Tommy Hynoski will lead the charge. The two sack masters Brett Przekop and Eric Joraskie will try to contain Lancaster Catholic quarterback. The Red Tornadoes defense has giving up a average of 7.6 in three games and one shut out.

One thing for sure is Friday Nights at the Silver Bowl will be the gathering place of choice for Mount Carmel faithfuls.
