Glen Mills Downs Chichester

Sometimes in football the final score doesn’t always indicate the way the game was played; a classic example of this was last Friday night’s Del Val game between the visiting Glen Mills Battlin’ Bulls and the host Chichester Eagles.
The Eagles could have easily rolled over and let the Bulls run roughshod over them but that wasn’t the case. Instead, the Eagles fought and gave the Bulls all they had, setting a season high in number of points scored. But even that wasn’t enough; the Eagles fell 42-12.
“I’m going to praise the heck out of these (kids) tonight and through the week, ‘cause what are we doing? We’re getting better,” Chichester head coach Ryan Smith, said, adding, “I’m proud of these kids, I really am.” Smith continued, “They (the players) are great kids; they work and practice hard; they are hard workers and I am proud of them for that.”
The Eagles also drew praise from Bulls Head Coach Kevin Owens who said, “I commend everyone of them young men over there; they worked hard and didn’t say, ‘It’s Glen Mills’ and rolled. We smacked them and they smacked us.” Owens added that, “The score wasn’t indicative of the way they played. Coach (Smith) should be proud of the way they played and he (Smith) really got something to build on.”
Following a fumble recovery by Nickolas Steryle, the Bulls were in great field position at the Eagles’ 35-yard line and three plays following the fumble, Felix Johnson punched his way through the Eagle defense from six yards out, giving the Bulls the 7-0 lead. The Bulls added to their lead on their next possession with a Malcolm Simpson one-yard touchdown run. The Eagles responded behind the arm of quarterback John Gillespie who found James Vrobel for an 18-yard touchdown, cutting the Bulls’ lead to 13-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Following an interception by Samier Becoat on the Eagles third play of the second quarter, the Bulls again were in business and capitalized with a Simpson to Kahron Walker, 35-yard touchdown. Following a fumble by the Eagles on the ensuing kickoff, the Bulls were again set up with good field position and they took advantage of it with Simpson capping the drive with his six-yard touchdown run to put the Bulls up 28-6 at halftime.
Following a 72-yard kickoff return down to the Eagles one-yard line by Maurice Houston to start the second half, the Bulls were in great position to add to their lead and they did with a one-yard plunge by George Hopkins that gave them the 35-6 lead. On their next possession, the Bulls kicked the mercy rule into effect with a one-yard plunge by James Marquez, putting them up 42-6.
The Eagles responded with a 53-yard touchdown pass from Gillespie to LaQuan Lambert. Gillespie finished the game with 180 yards passing on 12 of 28 passing. Gillespie also drew praise from Vrobel who said, “John’s been great for us all year.”
Up next for the Eagles is Octorara Friday night for Senior Night; kickoff is scheduled for 7 P.M.
