Exeter too much for Muhls

In week four of the scholastic football season, the Muhlenberg Muhls traveled to Governor Mifflin.  The end result was a 48-14 loss on a rainy Friday night.  After two straight weeks on the road, the Muhls came home for a week five showdown against the Exeter Eagles.  Unfortunately, coming home did not help the Muhls out.

In the first quarter the Muhls were driving until fourth and three, but luckily they caught the Eagles offsides to reset the chains for a first down.  They could not cash in on this monstrous opportunity and later fumbled with 6:11 left in the first quarter.  The fumble led to an Eagles running touchdown and the 7-0 lead.

The second quarter was a back and forth battle between the two squads.  Jordan Jeter had an interception, sparking the Muhls.  On their offensive drive, quarterback Adam Huber had a 21 yard pass to Eli Quinter but the Muhls would be stopped.  The Eagles used a big 61 yard touchdown pass from Kyle Yocum to Ben Bortz to take the 14 point lead.  The Eagles used their special teams to block Muhlenberg’s punt with 2:08 left to take a 21 point lead when it was recovered in the endzone.  The Muhls quickly responded with Dylan Smith’s 42 yard run  to get the Muhls within two touchdowns.  Like all season, the opposing team responded with a 67 yard touchdown right before halftime to regain the 21 point lead.

The third quarter was another back and forth battle with no one scoring.  The Muhls were silenced the rest of the night but Exeter was not done.

In the fourth quarter, quarterback Kyle Yocum had a two yard run to seal the deal for Exeter with a 34-7 victory.  Kyle Yocum’s leadership has led to Exeter’s 5-0 start.  Once a team fighting for a win each season, Exeter has developed into a threat in Section One of the Berks Football League.

With the loss, the Muhls fell to 1-4 overall.  Lack of offense all season has become a legitimate question.  Other than Smith’s 42 yard run in one play, Muhlenberg’s offense produced 79 yards of total offense.  Adam Huber completed seven out of his 16 passes and backup Jorge Alvarez was one for two.  The Muhls might need to change their gameplan from mostly run to half and half if they want to produce any more wins this season.

Muhlenberg travels to Conrad Weiser to face the Scouts Friday night.  With Weiser having a record of 5-0, can the Muhls pull off the upset?
