YORK, Pa. — EasternPAFootball.com has learned from multiple sources that York High School football is preparing for a new chapter, but the story of the program’s transition begins with the coach who helped restore stability and success to the Bearcats over the last decade.
The York City School Board is expected to approve the hiring of former Columbia and Eastern York head coach Daryl “Bud” Kyle as the next Head Coach of the Bearcats football program. While Kyle’s arrival marks the beginning of a new era, it also signals the end of a memorable tenure for outgoing head coach Russ Stoner.
Stoner took over the York High program in 2016 and quickly became one of the most influential figures in Bearcats athletics. During his 10-year run, he compiled a 62-41 record, guided York to multiple winning seasons, and helped the Bearcats regain their place among the York-Adams League’s most competitive programs.
Perhaps Stoner’s greatest accomplishment was providing consistency and leadership. Under his direction, York became a perennial playoff contender and produced numerous standout athletes who continued their careers at the collegiate level. His teams were known for their toughness, discipline, and ability to compete against some of the top programs in District 3.
The highlight of Stoner’s tenure came in 2018 when the Bearcats posted an 11-2 record and reached the District 3 Class 6A semifinals. That season remains one of the most successful campaigns in recent program history and helped reestablish York High as a football power in the region.
Beyond the wins, Stoner’s impact extended throughout the York community. He served as a mentor to countless student-athletes, emphasizing academics, character development, and accountability alongside success on the football field. Former players often credited him for helping shape them into better young men long after their playing days ended.
While a new era is about to begin, Stoner’s impact on York High football will not soon be forgotten.
