But tonight’s game was led by two Easton players and a stingy, Red Rover defense.
Trevon Tyler and Cole Ordway both had big nights leading the Red Rovers to another District title. Ordway rushed for two touchdowns and threw for one. Tyler rushed for a touchdown and a electric 90-yard kickoff return to lead Easton past Parkland 42-17 Friday night at BASD Stadium for their eighth District 11 Championship.
“It goes back to three years with these seniors and the amount of work they put in for this moment,” said Easton Head Coach Matt Seneca. “They put the work in and I couldn’t be happier for them.”
The defense got stronger as the game went on, shutting out the Trojans in the second half.
“Our defensive coaches came up with a game plan and we executed that tonight,” said Trevon Tyler.
But for Parkland tonight it was simple. Try and slow down Ordway. Which is not easy. They couldn’t crack that code as Ordway did Ordway things. His passing and throwing kept the Trojans defense on their heals most of the night.
“That’s Cole. He is going to take what the defense gives to him,” said Seneca. “The first half they were playing us man-to-man and we thought we had the advantage there. He is a game manager and controls the game.”
Easton’s defense forced a Parkland punt in the first quarter and Cole got the Red Rovers offense going. A long drive ended on a Ordway touchdown run. He stepped back to pass and saw the opening and went right up the middle of Parkland’s defense for the 28-yard touchdown run. It was Easton 7-0 with 4:00 minutes left in the first quarter.
After an Andrea Giroudon 30-yard field goal for Parkland, things really got interesting with under seven minutes left in the first half. Both teams combined for five touchdowns in a wild back-and-forth second quarter.
Tyler answered the Parkland score with a 63-yard touchdown run with 6:32 left in the first half.
“My O-line did a great job blocking for me tonight,” said Tyler. “They opened the hole and as soon as I saw it, I hit it.”
Liam Spang added a one-yard touchdown run and Tyler answered the Trojan scoring drive with a back breaking 90-yard kickoff return for Easton.
“I knew I had to make a play for my team,” said Tyler. “As soon as I got the ball in my hands and saw open space,I took off.”
With under a minute left in the first half, Trojans’ Finn Coen threw a touchdown pass to Jason Brader. But with 25 seconds left, the Red Rovers answered right back. Ordway hit Skyler Fowler in stride for a 45-yard touchdown pass. At Halftime, Easton led 28-17.
In the third quarter, the Easton offensive line took over and the Red Rovers iced the game with a pair of rushing touchdowns.
“That is our offensive line every Friday night,” said Seneca. “Coach Fleming and Coach Stroble do a great job with those guys. We had a great game plan coming into tonight and the kids came out and executed it.”
Ordway’s nine-yard touchdown run put Easton up 35-17 with 7:13 left in the third quarter and an eight-yard touchdown run by Chris Martinez sealed the win.
With the win, Easton improved to 13-0 and waits to see who they play next from District 12. On Saturday, La Salle College High School plays Imhotep Charter for the District 12 6A Championship at Northeast High School Supersite. Easton plays the winner.
