Berwick plays even scrimmage with Mifflin County

Huskies bring Navy’s flex bone offense to Crispin Field

Mifflin County, one of district 6’s quad A schools traveled to Dawgtown Thursday night for what would be both the Huskies and Dawgs final tune up before opening night. With Mifflin County came a big squad in numbers and a huge team in size. Their offense is tailored made from the Navy Academy’s flex bone O and their defense up front was gigantic. In the end both teams would trade two td’s in what many would say was a very evenly matched scrimmage.

County would get off to a fast start, shutting the Dawgs down on their first 10 plays and then finding paydirt on the offensive side of the ball in their first 5 plays. But Berwick would buckle down and play much better as the scrimmage continued.

The Dawgs kept the Huskies off of the scoreboard in the next 25 plays and would tack on a td, with a 35 yard pass play from Jr. QB CJ Curry to Jr. WR Alex Klinger. There would be no more scoring until down and distance play, which came toward the end of the contest with both teams getting an offensive series.

Berwick would score on their series, going 70 yards on 9 plays, with Curry scoring on a 10 yard QB keeper to cap the drive. Mifflin County would then in turn score on their offensive series, going 70 yards on 15 plays, converting on a 4th and 6 toward the middle of the drive.

Dawgs’ Sr. RB Matt Cashman was again very successful running the pigskin, averaging about 4 yards a carry against a big team up front. Berwick would look very good on defense recovering a fumble and picking off a few passes, while only giving the ball up once on offense via the interception. Of course, not much was to come from the takeaways, being both teams were given 10 plays on each offensive series, less the down and distance play.

“Tell ya what, that’s a pretty good football team we scrimmaged today. They are a quad A playoff team from last season and we played them tough,” noted Coach Curry.

Berwick will open their 2012 campaign this coming Friday night at Crestwood High School in Mountaintop. The Comets have played the Dawgs tough the last few seasons and this is a team that Curry has not seen a lot of. Crestwood was a team that would not normally be on Berwick’s schedule in years past and actually was one of the teams added to their schedule when Campbell took over the program.
