Abington Heights shuts out Wallenpaupack 38-0

CLARK SUMMIT – Abington Heights used a balanced attack Saturday afternoon against Wallenpaupack and rolled to a 38-0 win in a Lackawanna Football Conference Division One game.

The Comets scored through the air, on the ground and on special teams. But the most impressive thing Saturday afternoon was how Wallenpaupack shut down leading rusher Joe DeFebo to 48 yards rushing on 14 carries.

The Comets used their big offensive line to set the tone right from the opening kickoff with13 rushing plays that resulted in a 23-yard field goal by Charlie Armetta.

Abington Heights’ Offensive Guard Sal Conaboy said,” That’s the one thing the coach keeps telling us is that it all starts up front.”

In the second quarter the Comets showed their balance by scoring four touchdowns. Paul Gallagher got the scoring going on a 2-yard run. Gallagher led his team with 92 yards rushing. The second score came from quarterback Mike Beamish, 4-yard run.

Than on special teams Mike Umerich returned a punt 45-yards for a score to give the Comets a 24-0 lead.

The Comets weren’t done in the first half. They got the ball back with 1:10 to go in the first half. The Comets drove 70 yards on eight plays. Beamish hit Ian Kelly in the back of the end zone for the 21-yard score with six second to go at half. The Comets went into halftime with a 31-0 lead.

In the third quarter James Fruehan intercepted a pass setting up the Comets next score.

It would take only three plays. Gallagher scored on a 12-yard run to put this game out of reach. The Comets won 38-0.

Beamish finished the game completing 6 of 12 passes for 96 yards and one touchdown. He rushed for 42 yards.

Abington Heights (5-0) travels to North Pocono and Wallenpaupack (3-2) tries to rebound against Scranton.
