Drake, West Catholic Dominate Bishop McDevitt

CHESTER PA: Heading in the 2008 season West Catholic Sr. QB Curtis Drake and his West Catholic Burrs teammates set goals among them win a Catholic League/ District title has well as a State Title. Well on Saturday evening at Widener University Lesile C. Quick Stadium they accomplished one goal and that was being crown Philadelphia Catholic League AA Division regular season champions with a thumping of the Bishop McDevitt Lancers by a score of 62-7. The wide margin of victory should had came has no surprise as entering the game the Burrs average margin of victory in league game is astonishing 51.6 points per game. “I don’t know it could go both ways, its good to have big wins to show that we are working hard” is how Drake would respond when asked his teams dominance of the league. Drake would add that his main goal is do what he’s got to do to make it to states.

Drake and Burrs would waste little time getting on the broad has on the fifth play of the game Drake would show his unbelievable jukeing skills as he danced his way through the Lancers defense for a 66 yard touchdown. Tim Carroll extra point attempt would be blocked giving the Burrs the early 6-0 lead.

On ensuing Lancer drive the Burrs defense would get on the broad when Dante Dickens would intercept a Luke Sawick pass and return it 41 yards. Sr. Raymond Maples would take a direct snap in for the 2 point conversion giving the Burrs the 14-0 lead with 7:37 left in the first.

Maples would extend the Burrs lead to 21 when he busted his way through the defense from 23 yards out. Carroll would add the extra point giving the Burrs the 21-0 lead with 4:18 yards left in the first.

Not to be out done by his fellow classmates in the backfield Sr. Rob Holloman would power his way in from 6 yards out. Carroll’s kick would be blocked making the Burrs lead 27-0.

On the next Burrs drive Penn State Committee Drake would show his athletic ability has he picked up a fumble that was caused by a play action fake to Holloman. Drake would proceed to maneuver his way through the defense for 44 yard touchdown. “ My first thought was to fall on it but then I saw that no one was around and I had opening on the left side, wide receiver Quran Kent made a good block down field” is how Drake would describe his run. “He’s a tremendous player, athlete has great moves in the open field” is how Burrs Head Coach Brian Fluck would describe Drake. Drake would then hook up with Eric Young giving the Burrs the 35-0 lead. Drake would finish the game 137 yards on 5 carries and 2 touchdowns. Drake would also add 18 yards on 2 of 3 passing

Holloman would add one more score in the first half with his 1 yard plunge. Carroll gave the Burrs the 42-0 lead heading into the break.

The Lancers would finally get on the broad with the first drive of the second half in which they drove down 64 yards before Sawick would sneak his way in from a yard out. The PAT would be good cutting the Burrs lead down to 42-7.

The Burrs second team showed that are just has good as the first string. The first second half touchdown come compliments of a Brandon Mercer pass to Andre Maddox from 14 yards. Carroll would add the extra point giving the Burrs the 49-7 lead.

Not wanting to be out done by his older brother Rob Sophomore Brandon Holloman would punch it in 43 yards out. The extra point was no good giving the Burrs the 55-7 lead.

Mercer would cap the scoring with his 44 yard touchdown run with 3:09 left in the game. Carroll kick would be good giving the Burrs 62-7 victory.

Up next for the Burrs is the Wolverines of Kennedy-Kenrick next weekend in the semi finals of the Catholic League AA playoffs. The Burrs bested the Wolverines 50-0 in their regular season meeting. The Lancers will take on the Patriots of Archbishop Carroll semi finals. The Lancers down the Patriots 28-6 in the regular season meeting.
