@D2 Fan – here are what I consider to be the marquee games in the WPIAL for week 4
Propel Braddock Hills at McKeesport (Thursday) – Propel starting QB/DB Gabe Jenkins was hurt last week in their victory over Hopewell but is expected to play tomorrow night, McKeesport looked better against TJ than they did against Montour, but their defense struggled against the run giving up 200+ yards to Tyler Eber and unable to get a stop on defense as TJ ran out the last 5+ minutes of the game in come from behind 40-33 win.
Moon at TJ – Moon’s brutal nonconference schedule continues, they lost to a very good Penn Trafford team last week
North Hills at Peters Twp – can NH get to 3-0 in coach K’s debut season, impressive win over Bethel Park last week, Peters finally won after dropping their first 2 contests
South Fayette at Trinity- these schools swapped classes and conferences, SF played in 5A the last 3 cycles, while Trinity played in 4A, could be a trap game for SF after beating Montour last week and playing Upper St. Clair next week
West Allegheny at Montour – Bob Palko back at the helm at WA, they hung 59 on Gateway last week, Montour looking to bounce back after last weeks loss
Central Valley at Hopewell – nice Beaver county matchup, CV now in 4A, can Hopewell bounce back from their loss to Propel
New Castle at Avonworth – Intriguing matchup, NC was expected to contend in 4A and finally won their first game last week after getting beat up by Woodland Hills and Propel their first 2 games
Beaver at Beaver Falls – big rivalry game, Beaver jumped out to a 28-3 lead against a solid Highlands team last week, only to give up 28 unanswered to fall behind 31-28 in the fourth quarter but rallied to win 35-31
Seton LaSalle at Steel Valley – good 2A matchup with playoff seeding implications, will Seton continue to roll after handing the Quips their first shoutout since 2017, a span of 105 games
That’s the only team I’ll be following from the West. Seton Lasalle. SV will have a very tall task shutting down QB.
Seton Lasalle looks like the real deal this year in AA.
Yes, they are very good, they won WPIAL 2A last year after losing in the final the year before, I foresee a rematch between SL and Farrell in the western finals, unless Westinghouse knocks off Farrell the week before. Seton’s defense is better this year as evidenced by their shutout of the Quips last week.
According to a report from T102 Sports.Schuylkill Haven football coach Mike Farr has been suspended for the Hurricanes’ next two games. I wonder what that’s all about.

Northwest Area 76 – CMVT 0
I’ll ask again. Why??
Northwest is not a historically strong program, they have gone a combined 6-26 over the past couple years and actually went independent this year due to their struggles. CMVT is just really bad this year, they have a schedule full of lower-level programs and are still getting beat down.
Considering the score was 62-0 at halftime, maybe 76-0 isn’t all that bad.
Shut down the program for rest of season or forfeit next game to Renaissance and give all you got to the Holy Cross game? Assuming they are a numbers problem? injuries? Feel bad for those kids (and Lebanon High’s also) JMO

Shenandoah Valley sitting at 3-0. Congratulations!. Facing off against a 2-1 Tri Valley team. Can Shenandoah continue to pound the ground and be 4-0 ?
Marian catholic vs Minersville. Marian moved the ball really well against Tamaqua. Marian racked up 8-65 yds. in penalties. Need to finish drives with points, be a little more disciplined and avoid costly penalties.
Shenandoah is hot. Going with Devils 28-27
Marians woes continue into week #4, another close heartbreaker. Minersville 26-24.
Haven gets their 1st win of the Season. Haven over Mahanoy.
William Valley over Nativity.
Good for Shenendoah after not winning a game in two years but their schedule gets much tougher. They will be in the mix to make 2A playoffs. Still think Haven and Northern will be in 2A champ in dist 11

Solid prediction, after last year’s game, Mount Carmel definitely tries to pile it on.
Did Wally take a look at what was coming up through the grades and was like deuces or did he have other circumstances to why he left?
After Friday’s game they will have played 4 state ranked teams in 4 games. The only bad loss was to number 2 notre dame green pond in 3a. The teams have a combined record of 8-1 with the only loss to southern columbia. They should be 2-1 and not 0-3. Mt. Carmel got wounded last year because north schuylkills running back could have ran for 1,000 yds in one game if they wanted him too. Me saying 49-0 is becsuse my lack of any kind of trust in there coaching but if there is one coach who can coach at the same level its mca’s coach. Here is a quick prediction. Putting your best player at qb and thinking he can just run every play and not have any passing game is a loss everytime you play a good team. Southern? Loss shamokin? Loss and then what do you get? Instead of having a young quarterback.with a year under his belt as a starter next year your breaking in someone new again who is a natural qb. Both mca and ns have had the same problems. Great teams being held back by bad coaching. There systems work against milton and Tamaqua but it doesn’t beat the good schools with the same talent
They should have beat jersey shore and williams valley. All the coaches are back except for him. Coaching the exact same way. Soft on defense with absolutely no blitzing and they run the same 3 plays all game. They get beat badly after halftime and in game coaching. They have always had the talent but in the wally hall era and now they don’t have the coaching. Team is young though. Also a former psu starting lb son plays golf and not football and a talented ex 2 way players son plays soccer. I seen the middle school team just beat state college so talent is coming but when you dont have good coaching your done

D2 Notes after Week 3. 7-3 with a major whiff again & getting too greedy on some underdog winners.
– Good god, I whiffed on Wyoming Area. I’m thinking it’s a down year in the valley this year & I thought they’d be a lot stronger than this.
– What a cool win for WVW. They beat West Scranton in a 6A battle that could really be a factor for seeding positions come Week 10.
– A huge win for Carbondale over Crestwood. It may’ve been 14-7, but that’s a statement for the Chargers to beat a stronger (traditionally) program. They get Honesdale in a second 4A implication game next week. I think we might get a new champion in LFC 3 this year.
– DV getting a come from behind win over ES South was a surprise. I know this DV team isn’t as dominant as others, but there’s no way it should be that close against one of the Pocono teams. They get their first LFC 1 game vs. Scranton Prep next week.
– Wallenpaupack putting up 52 on Western Wayne was a surprise. A nice turnaround after a Week 1 loss to Honesdale. Scranton comes up next. Keep an eye on Paupack in LFC 1. They’re going to be in games this year.
– Montrose jumps to 3-0 after a beatdown vs. CMVT. Seriously, when was the last time they put up 55 on someone? They get Holy Cross next…then (3-0!?) Renaissance. Year of the underdog teams doing better.
– Holy Redeemer in 2A gets their first win, as they beat Susquehanna Saturday Night. I wish I put this in the D2 picks, but there was no room.
– Dunmore/Holy Cross shouldn’t have even happened. Let’s face it. HC should co-on with HR or go flat out independent. If I did want to be a commissioner of a league, the D2/D4/D11 weaker small schools being in their own “football-only” league would be a nice touch.
Speaking of old D2 teams, Northwest Area has a game tomorrow night against CMVT. Why so early? Anyone in that area know why? Quite a short turnaround.
Also, because I mentioned them in the Montrose game, what’s happening with Renaissance? They haven’t won a game in 4 years or so of playing, but now have 3. New coaching? “Recruiting”? The Shen Valley effect of one really good player making them better?
@Kevin X…..yes PJP vs Shanahan this week, somewhat surprised with Shanahans start considering they lost alot to graduation. PJP junior dominated team. Good rivalry . Not sure if turf is still in the plans or not, bleachers and press box a priority now, would allow the visiting team to bring their band etc. 6A appears wide open with I guess CB west leading the pack at the moment. Ridley looks strong not sure how tested they will be in what appears to be a not overly strong Central league. Same deal with 5a, Springfield looks decent ,ditto Garnet Valley….couple sneaky under the radar teams Upper Perk and Pottsgrove having good seasons so far. If PJP and Spring -Ford continue on with their fast start could set up a big late October showdown. Spring -Ford plays their homecoming game on a Saturday afternoon and this yr its vs PJP. Of course long way to go before that and some tough games before that one for both teams.
@ Kevin X…..correction I didnt realize Pottsgrove dropped down to 4a so that makes district one 4a more interesting playoff wise.
Archbishop Wood LaSalle game this afternoon gave me the worse sunburn all summer.
Catholic League games are different. Not necessarily better, just different.
An off the cuff, what the heck, long range prediction: 3A Eastern semi-final, Archbishop Wood vs. Northwestern Lehigh.
I think Notre Dame GP/ Northwestern winner will win 3A state title. There’s a reason they are both ranked in top 4 in state. Notre Dame GP looks to be on a mission but unfortunately for them Northwestern will stand in the way in 3A title game. Should be a great final.
Nothing for or against Northwestern Lehigh, but I’d be rooting for NDGP just for the fact that I like seeing new faces playing later in November.
We’ll see, they will have to beat the winner of a loaded WPIAL in the state final assuming they get that far. The WPIAL is 8-2 in 3A state finals since the move to 6 classes 10 years ago, with the losses coming when Wyoming overcame a 14 point deficit in the fourth quarter to stun Central Valley 21-14 in 2019, and of course Northwestern Lehigh’s 36-33 OT victory over Avonworth 2 years ago. There’s a reason the top 2 teams in PA Football News poll are from the WPIAL with Propel Braddock Hills #1 and the team they beat last week Hopewell at #2, with defending state champ Avonworth lurking at #6.
You might very well be right about that prediction I do think Wood is a contender in 3A and I like Northwestern Lehigh’s chances again.
Your WPIAL 3A is going to be fun this year. Starting to look wide open. Don’t know anything about any other non WPIAL western PA 3A teams.
Yep, several really good teams in WPIAL 3A, not sure if there is a great team yet like Avonworth last year. Outside the WPIAL the 3A contenders in the west are Hickory from D10, who lost to 2A Westinghouse 20-6 in week 1, and Cambria Heights and Central Cambria from D6, I would be surprised if any of those teams beat the WPIAL winner in the state semifinals.
Kevin X I saw that was a close game at half with La Salle opening it up to 38-10 in the 4th when they got their stuff together. Credit to Archbishop Wood for keeping it close in the first half but wondering what the score could have been with LA Salle putting a complete game together.
I think the Notre Dame and Northwestern district 11 final game will be a classic, but slight edge to Northwestern.
Looking at the 3A bracket in the east, I think thats very plausible, Id put my money on Northwestern or Notre Dame against Archbishop Wood. I don’t think District 2, 3 or 4 have a great 3A team. Wyo doesn’t look the same, maybe Mount Carmel could cause problems but the SH win doesn’t look has impressive anymore.
Not sure what you mean by a complete game. Not many teams have a complete game very early in the season and especially against a quality opponent. I can turn that around and ask what would the result have been if Wood had a complete game (they didn’t, not even close). With that said, LaSalle did loose their top WR (Johnson) the first play (or early) in the second quarter. Also in the first quarter running back A. Nelson left and never returned either. Hope they both get back soon. Second, the score was irrelevant to me, I was just curious to see both teams live and get a feel for each them going forward. I expect to see LaSalle again, not sure about Wood. Wood’s RB Webb did not have a great game other than one long run in the first half. Wood’s QB Drakeley looked like a D1 recruit at times, other times I was looking at their bench to see if the backup was warming up. I have little doubt that both will be forces the rest of the way in league play and any playoff games. There is no team statewide in 3A of LaSalle’s caliber, despite being a possible down year for them.
I agree about ND & NW game will be very competitive; can’t wait!! With addition of Wyo, Alquippa 3A should be interesting statewide!!
One could argue LS was outplayed in the 1H against AW; AW getting a TD called back because of illegal formation & not scoring inside the 2 yard line in the 1H was a wasted opportunity. LS wore them down as the game went on with great OL play. Credit to AW, the program was in a bad spot few seasons ago & they held their own against LS. I don’t think many teams in the state take that game especially at the 3A level. Both teams can win their respective leagues but LS achilles heal may be their QB play they seem to be limited in the passing game.
Aliquippa got shut out 28-0 by 2A Seton LaSalle last week, the first time they’ve been shut out since they lost 2-0 to Quaker Valley in the 2017 WPIAL 3A final, a span of 105 games, I predicted they would lose but never thought they would get shut out. At this point Aliquippa looks like the 4th-5th best team in WPIAL 3A, you can never count them out, but I would be surprised if they win a title this year, although then again not many people outside of Aliquippa thought they would win WPIAL 4A last year.
Absolutely shocked SJP got blown out by Bergen Catholic 33-3 after watching them get dominated in the trenches 2 weeks ago against PCC. Speaking of PCC they pulled away from PR in the 2nd half to win 48-24 after PR cut the lead to 3 in the third quarter. That will likely by their closest game until deep into the state playoffs they will crush the rest of their WPIAL opponents
SJP’s QB, Maxwell Rogers, was injured and had to leave the game in the first quarter, when the score was 3-3. SJP couldn’t move the ball after that so BC kept getting the ball in great field position. I don’t know how bad Rogers’ injury is. Also, BC is probably a much better team than the first two weeks suggested.
Was not aware the QB got hurt which was obviously a big factor but still surprising to see them lose like that. I also agree BC is better than the first 2 games suggested and think the way PCC dominated in their game said more about how good PCC is this year than Bergen.
Some corrections: Rogers was injured just before SJP tied the game; he was largely responsible for their only real drive of the game on their second possession.
Also, the main problem SJP’s defense had wasn’t dealing with poor field position but defending against the long pass. BC receivers made some great catches, but in at least one case there was weak coverage on a BC TD pass. Not sure SJP will face another QB with the arm the BC QB has, but they still need to tighten up. Also, one BC TD came after a blocked punt put them very near the SJP goal line.
It will be tough going if Rogers is out for most or all of the season. He looked really good in the first game.

Yet, Garnet Valley was left high and dry without a game this weekend after the Harriton debacle.
On a positive note, it wasn’t the worse PA high school football beatdown this weekend (actually not even close, believe it or not).

If this Dunmore/Holy Cross game was played in District 10 this weekend, it would have been one of the more competitive games in District 10 this weekend.
I got the inside scoop on what’s going on with the Clairton program and why they forfeited their week 2 game against Steel Valley. Star player Brandon Murphy was hurt in the first half of the Farrell game at the Wolvarena and the medical staff recommended he not play for the remainder of the game however coach Wade played him anyhow in the second half, he played a handful of plays and then didn’t return so the district suspended him and didn’t put a time frame for when he can return. That’s why there was the cryptic message from the school district that Wade was still the head coach when they announced they were forfeiting the SV game.
Basically what I saw as well after my initial posting. So is he going to be back, or is this one of those slow, keep it as quiet as possible dismissals?? I don’t get their forfeit in week 2. So your star play is hurt (I’m assuming not available for that game), and your coach is suspended, so you forfeit?? I can’t believe the WPIAL isn’t looking into this situation.
Didn’t the Woodland Hills coach just get suspended or fired as well??

Didn’t have 0-3 North Schuylkill and 0-3 Schuylkill Haven but 3-0 Shenendoah on my bingo card.
Here are some games I would have picked differently
McDevitt over State College – I think McDevitt is the better team and wins 34-20
SJP over Bergen – same score, SJP wins 34-20
In the WPIAL I like Blackhawk to roll over OLSH, don’t think this game will be that close, West Mifflin over Belle Vernon, Upper St Clair over Canon Mac, Norwin to beat Franklin Reg., and Highlands over Beaver, they are very solid and possible sleeper in 3A.
I’ll also take Seton LaSalle to upset the Quips 27-21, and the Bethel Park vs. North Hills game is an interesting matchup, neither have played since week 1, as both were scheduled to play last Thursday but had their games cancelled due to thunderstorms, I’ll pick North Hills to get to 2-0 in coach K’s first season back at his alma mater, as I think BP is down a little bit this year.
I too like McKeesport to bounce back against TJ, they have played 8 times in the last 5yrs and split those games, TJ also had their game cancelled last week against Mt. Lebo due to a power outage from the storms the previous night and I think that hurts them in this game and McKeesport wins 28-20.
I am going to the PCC vs. PR game, I don’t think it will be as close as you predicted, I’ll take PCC 42-21.
Picks for the state are done. I did the Thursday games just a few nights prior & got the West games in this morning. Thanks to Jeff for some help on the marquee games out West. We’ll have some disagreements, I’m sure. Sorting order later on.

In the SOL, Pennridge vs Council Rock South should be the best game of crossover week. Plymouth Whitemarsh vs CB South could be a good game if South is able to pull things together, plus they’re in early desperation mode at 0-2. Same applies for CB West vs Souderton, with the Indians desperate to avoid an 0-3 start in a game that’s not close on paper.
CBW @ Pennridge next week!!! First of the round robin games between P-Ridge, CBW, and North Penn over the next several Friday nights.
That’s the game of the week in the SOL next Friday night. West wasn’t flashy last night, but soundly handled Souderton. It was 35-0 and a running clock when West pulled the starters. Nick Miletto had another big night running people over and then running away from them. Cipollo and Cape (2 TDs) both also scored. When all three of the backs are clicking, it’s a lot to defend. West had a few starters in street clothes, will be interesting to see what they get back for Pennridge.
Week 3
– Wyoming Area vs. Berwick (GoW): There isn’t a whole lot of great games this week, but this is a good one to put on the ledger to lead off the picks. Both teams responded with nice wins last week. I think Wyoming Area takes this big time matchup.
– Lackawanna Trail vs. Lakeland (LFC): Not as flashy this time around, but this is an important game for Trail. The two teams go in on opposite spectrums. I think that the Chiefs put Trail in a rare 0-3 spot.
– Riverside vs. Lake-Lehman (WVC): I could go Pittston vs. Hanover Area, but it’s not as intriguing. Both teams are going to be playoff hopefuls & this seems like a fun game. Give me the Vikings here.
– Abington Heights vs. Dallas (Big Boys): Two of the notable district champs from recent years are going at it up in Mountie country. This should be quite a thrilling game. I’ll take Dallas in a close one.
– Old Forge vs. Mid Valley (Small School): Not the most appealing small school game, but a game that may be a bit more even in the small school universe. I’ll take Mid Valley in a close one.
– CMVT vs. Montrose (Rivalry/Respect): Let’s take a look at the 3A standings & see who’s in…OH MY GOODNESS. Is this a joke? MONTROSE? Leading 3A? That seems impossible! Give credit to Brett Stage for putting them in a great spot jump to 3-0. I’ll be curious to see if they can make it or opt-in. Hey ES North, Holy Cross, Sayre, Bucktail, Pine Grove, the Allentown schools, Lebanon, & Wilson Area: See what happens when you go indie or hire an assistant from a top program?
– Carbondale vs. Crestwood (Playoffs?): This didn’t make my bingo card for a picks segment pick. Both are coming off of losses & the winner may have the better seed in 4A. No QB for Crestwood? I’ll take a shocker in C’dale.
– Valley View vs. Wilkes-Barre (Crossover): A sneaky good game between two teams that seem to love to schedule a game every cycle. Both teams are in interesting positions. WBA is looking to avoid 0-3 & I sadly think it happens.
– Hollidaysburg vs. Susquehanna Township (5A/6A): What a game down in H’burg, as H’burg takes on 4A H’burg. I think the Tiger H’burg sneaks past…barely. As for Miff Co & DuBois, I think they have winnable games themselves vs. the P schools.
– Williams Valley vs. North Schuylkill (1A): North Schuylkill going 0-3 would be a surprise, but Williams Valley is a team that can put up a big fight. I say the bigger school prevails, to save their season.

To be fair to Bucktail, they have been very competitive in their games so far, and most of their schedule is against teams of a similar level already. They are a tiny school in a remote area, so one could argue that simply existing means they are outpacing expectations. Even with their league membership, they have games lined up against Renaissance and CMVT, so they will have chances at a win.
Some of the larger schools; Lebanon, Pine Grove, Wilson, the Allentown schools; have been done zero favors by their leagues and should strongly consider playing independent football schedules.
Week 2 D2 Notes
I whiffed on the D6 Spotlight game, but I’m fine with it because I know nothing about Mifflin Co. or even Shippensburg.
1. Ummm…is Lackawanna Trail okay? Seeing a very good Dunmore team not only beat them, but give them the classic Alabama vs. FCS cupcake whooping is a shock to a lot of us in D2 territory (though at least for me). I know they lost some key players, but I’d expect a Steve Jervis team to be better than this. They get Riverside next. Oh boy. Well, Carbondale’s got a legit chance, if the underdogs want to pounce this season. It’ll be a long season up on Tunnel Hill.
2. Montrose football, speaking of Lackawanna Trail themselves, is 2-0. Brett Stage brought this team to win back to back in the rivalry against Susquehanna. They get CMVT & I’ll be adding it to my picks of the week. I may have to channel a specific Yinzer YouTuber for why I’m placing it in the D2 picks.
3. DV kept it close against Northampton this past week. A very good loss against a good D11 team that they can compete with. Let’s see if they can beat ES South (who I feel is very winnable after what happened vs. the other purple & white team this weekend).
4. Valley View avenged the Northwestern loss with a 19-6 win over Crestwood.
5. A solid win for Berwick over Pittston. I got that right this week.
Not the most appealing Week 3 schedule up my way. It’s a mixed bag of games & there’s maybe one or two solid games & the rest are those with their fair share of question marks.

PCC vs. PR- battle of the heavyweights, 2 best teams in the WPIAL this year
McKeesport vs. TJ – can the Port bounce back after a subpar performance against Montour, very disorganized, tons of penalties, many of the illegal shift/motion/procedure variety, consistently late getting play calls in, etc.
Montour at South Fayette – will Montour have a letdown after huge win last week, is SF a true contender in 4A?
Aliquippa at Seton LaSalle – really interesting matchup, think LaSalle has the talent to hang with, if not beat the Quips
Propel Braddock Hills vs. Hopewell – big nonconference 3A matchup, WPIAL is loaded in 3A this year with a handful of very good teams, Propel destroyed 4A New Castle last week
Penn Trafford vs. Moon – 2 of the better 5A teams behind PR
WH at NA – will NA start the year 0-3 with PR and PCC coming up in next few weeks, can WH bounce back after getting mauled last week by PCC as expected.
Fort Cherry at Laurel – does FC get revenge for losing in WPIAL semi-finals last year, Matt Sieg’s younger brother Colin is new starting Qb for FC as a freshman and he’s looked very good thus far in his first 2 games but this is his first real test

Week 0/1 D2 Notes that I never caught up on. I’ll make these short & sweet. I said I’d do these on here & never did.
Sorry for the odd link on the Google doc last week. If it happens again, the one I made on Week 1 is the default. I’ll make sure the current week is in the front of the line, for future weeks.
– I was 8-2 on opening week. Not that bad, but whiffed on the W team outcomes.
– Impressed with Abington’s effort against ACC in Week 1. A great defensive game
– Dunmore blowing out & mercy ruling Wyoming Area was not on my bingo card.
– DV kept it close & was a two pt conversion away from beating Becahi. 2 pt conversions away from a win were a theme in Week 1, I believe.
– Redeemer came so, so close to beating former WVC competitor Northwest Area in Week 1, but their defense let them down. A solid effort against a weak team.
– The big takeaway is that Western Wayne is back, kinda. A stunning upset in Week 1 over Trail made me shocked. They rebuilt after being destroyed by the graduation bug from the 2024 team & felt they weren’t 1,000% ready to compete this year. A 2-0 start now makes me curious about where they’ll stack up outside of Prep.
Week 2, I’ll send out later. I have thoughts on the Dunmore/Trail game & a few notable teams.
Also, congrats to Renaissance on getting their second win last week. Plus, shoutout to a 2-0!? Shenandoah Valley team. I hope they’ve found a way to be competitive in Schuylkill II this season. That’d be fun if the running game helps.

That looks like our Thursday night game. I haven’t been there since they put the lights in. Do they now have a gate, or still just charge for parking (or per person in the car)?? Parking get tight now for these night games?? I was a cheapo for the Saturday afternoon games and parked across the street in the residential area. Not sure if that is an option for night games.
Dont charge for parking, you just pay at either end of the hill on visitors side, five dollars. Next stage is to build bleachers and a press box on the hill that is the visitors side now, that will become the home side once they raise the money to complete that. Too bad mostly all games on Thursday night looks like Friday is going to be a much better night weather wise.
Thanks for the info, just as you said. They still got the good ‘ole grass field. Guessing turf is somewhere on their long term capital improvement plans as well. Good game other then a lot of penalties and the special team for both sides were not exactly special. Stiff defenses on both sides. But still freaking muggy and no breeze. Yuk!! Thanks. Both school’s websites had Thursday, you guys, MaxPreps, others had Friday. I was hoping for Friday, but expecting Thursday like the rest of District One. That will make a Friday night game tougher to find 🙂
