  1. Pjp defeats Rustin 18-17 in ot,they have won first three games all by one point each, two of them in ot. Not sure if I’ve ever seen a team win three straight by a point each to start the season, crazy stuff

    1. Doesn’t matter if you win by 1 or 41. A W is a W is a W!!

I have pretty much “inked” in Imhotep @ Malvern Prep next Friday night, but Shanahan @ PJPII is very intriguing. I may be one of the few, maybe only one (other than the NIMBYs across the street from the school??), that wish PJPII still played their home games on Saturday afternoon. It made for one or 2 nice Friday night/Saturday afternoon back to back games.

      1. Sat games were nice at times, but have to say I like the night games at Pjp now. PJP handled Shanahan going away the last few yrs,but Shanahan has an experienced team this yr. PJP is mostly a young team this yr especially in the trenches but they do have talent . Regardless of the outcome could be an early preview of the District 4a final. The PV -DTW game was a good one huh

  2. Downingtown West @ Perk Valley for me this evening. Choose the best answer:

A.) DTW will mercy rule PV
B.) DTW will win comfortably by 2 to 4 scores
C.) DTW will escape from Graterford with a narrow hard fought victory
D.) PV will celebrate with a huge upset win

    1. Not sure that would really be a “huge upset”. PV has good program,I know DTW made district final last yr, but it’s been a while since there has been a really dominant 6A team in district one. The days of Mike Pettine’s CBW teams seem so long ago even though they really aren’t

      1. I’ll agree. I’ll remove the “huge” and just go with simple “upset.” If they can go down to the ‘Ville next week and take care of business against Coatesville, I’ll jump on the PV bandwagon and revise answer D.) to “celebrate with a very nice win” 🙂

Guess I went into that game with high expectations for DTW, and no so much for PV (I would have answered “B”), which had me thinking CB West @ Soudy instead. Glad I did not change my mind. Walked out not overly impressed with DTW (granted, I had fairly high expectations of them going into the game), but I will give PV credit for hanging in there, their persistence, and getting the OT win. Simple game plan for future opponents of DTW, stop #8.

My preseason D1 6A pick Haverford lost to Penncrest. What was up with that?? Yikes. I will officially declare District One 6A title is anybody’s for the taking. Will be a very fun, entertaining, and competitive year (has been already). Probably can say they same for D1 5A.

    2. C-Dwest will pull out a close victory. I was at the PV/Mifflin game and PV was impressive. They have a bevy of running backs and quick receivers, the also have size upfront, their defense stopped Mifflin’s running game cold. PV should have beaten Springfield, several bonehead calls inside Springfields 5 yard line cost them the game. If PV can get by DWest and Coatesville…who they beat last year, in the next 2 weeks I can see them running the table and getting a top 3 seeding in the District 1 playoffs.

      1. It’s fun when things are wide open as far as who is the best in the district, but having a powerhouse likes those CB West teams was interesting too, gave everyone a target. But 6a just isn’t as good as it was overall back then.

    1. @D2 Fan – TJ – McKeesport is a tossup, that’s the game I’m going to tonight, Kemon Spell is expected to play, but I haven’t heard about their OL guys who didn’t play last week, with the uncertainty due to injuries I’ll take TJ 28-21, as I think they will control the line of scrimmage on both sides, do enough on defense to contain Spell, and will shorten the game on offense with their power running game behind workhorse Tyler Eber, I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets 40+ carries tonight.

Don’t disagree with any of your other WPIAL picks with the exception of Central Valley vs BV, I think CV wins that game at home but expect it be close. I also think NA will destroy Penn Hills and could be a mercy rule, PH is down this year and that game could get ugly. Imani will also beat Beaver by 3-4 scores, they look like the 2nd best team in WPIAL 3A behind Avonworth.

One interesting note is PCC is playing Woodland Hills at Tom Benson HOF stadium in Canton as part a a triple header tomorrow, they play the 3:30 game, while Ohio schools play the opener and nightcap. This is the first annual NFL HOF HS kickoff classic, and each school asked to participate has 1 member in the NFL HOF, with PCC having Dan Marino and Woody with Jason Taylor. WH traveled to Ohio today and got to tour the HOF, pretty neat experience for the kids. Woodland Hills leads the all time series 16-14 although PCC has won the last 7 meetings, including a 54-14 thrashing last year at the Wolvarena. PCC will dominate the line of scrimmage like they did in the 2nd half against PR last week and they will win this game comfortably like you predicted.

      1. That Hall of Fame Classic idea is awesome. I hope they continue to do that in the future.

Good call picking TJ last night. McKeesport falling to 1-2 is very interesting to me, but they have had a tough schedule so far in conference. Definitely going to be battle tested come playoffs, if everyone is healthy.

        1. Spell played on the first series and had 3 nice carries for a total of about 30 yards, then reinjured his ankle and was out the rest of the game, McKeesport also had a few other injuries, so they are like the walking wounded right now. With that being said they led 7-3 until late in the fourth quarter when TJ scored on 4th and 5 from the 7 yard line to take a 10-7 lead with about a minute to go, then added a pick 6 with less than 10 seconds to go to make the final score a very deceiving 16-7. I was impressed with McKeesport’s defense, they bottled up running back Tyler Eber and held him to 40 yards on 22 carries, and McKeesport also more than held their own at the line of scrimmage. Bottom line is if McKeesport is healthy come playoff time I still think they are the team to beat in WPIAL 4A, I also think they are the only WPIAL 4A team that has a shot to advance in the state playoffs, TJ is not as good as last year, especially the offensive line, and Aliquippa got dominated at home by Avonworth 23-7 in a game that was not as close as the final score.

    1. Yep. Happens first two weeks of playoffs too. Doesn’t get competitive until district championships and state playoff (although some of them are lopsided as well). If a team has 2-3 competitive games in a regular season that’s a surprise. Northwestern Lehigh has blown out their first three opponents. They will only get maybe three competitive reg games against possibly NS and Southern Lehigh.

          1. Districts love to use classifications as an excuse to be lazy with scheduling. If it was really about what’s best for the kids, mixed-classification divisions would be way more common in D3 and D7.

          2. D3 schedules games by classification, many schools have no business playing schools of similar size. For example Daniel Boone is a 5a school playing similar size schools. After 3 games the have been outscored by a score of 150-7 they should be playing 1a or 2a schools

    2. @Kevin X that is probably the biggest disappointment I see from eastern PA football/teams. Outside of D1 6A and the PCL, the depth of a lot of these leagues or district classifications is awful. I would love if leagues or districts went with 3 or 4 out of league/conf games. Because, let’s be honest, most coaches or schools should have an idea of what they have in the pipeline coming up through the grades that allows them to discuss and schedule appropriate games with other schools.

      1. Sure would like to see the reincarnation of Mike Pettine in District 1 6A. CB West took on all comers back in the day-Public Powerhouses, Private Powerhouses and beat them all. The BECA/CB West game in the PIAA playoffs will probably never be duplicated. 20,000 fans at that game.

      2. PA’s geography is inherently limited to a big rural swath, Pittsburgh, and some blue-collar cities. And there are 2 cities statewide that have a population >100,000. From there, many districts are divided into very small chunks that are maybe a couple miles going in one direction. So this creates a lot of parity when urbanization trends towards Philly. So D1, D7 (and D3 to a lesser extent) have the vast majority of the 5A/6A schools and cater to the best talent pool statewide. Also, add in the PA’s heyday was back in the days when coal mining was a significant contribution to a town’s local economy (which rightfully died off due to workplace safety reasons) and you have the talent disparity we have in today’s PIAA landscape.

    3. Honestly did not see that PME/Scranton blowout coming, I figured it would be a close one. I guess one team adapted to the elements and the other didn’t.

  4. Hello everyone, just found out about the site

I was a frequent poster on the pa preps rival site, which had archived forums back about a decade or so. Pretty recently I saw the site morphed into something called “on3”, and I simply cannot find that forum anymore. Does anyone know the fate of it? If it’s gone I’ll probably just stay here

    1. On3 and Rivals (who hosted PaPreps) merged in August, and all message boards from the entire Rivals network were streamlined. There was a PaPreps landing page right after the merger, but it was locked for posting, then went away after about a week. I keep checking periodically (I posted a lot there) but it looks like On3 has cut it from their repertoire. Unfortunate, as it was a nice little community. The lack of threads makes this one a tough follow for me, but it may be the only option?

Rovers showed some mettle beating an athletically impressive Erasmus Hall team tonight out of Brooklyn after digging themselves an early hole.

    2. I think On3 brought out Rivals that ran that site I could be wrong but I think thats what happened. I would look at those old forum pages fun to remember some of those teams/games.

    3. @ Northalleghenytiger – I followed and read that site for years but never posted on it, I too have been unable to find it this year, all I can find is “on3” like you mentioned. I’ve been posting on this site for several years since the Western PA forum folded, I’m a Woodland Hills guy so mostly post about the WPIAL but also comment on other big games around the state, welcome aboard!

I was at the NA vs. Woody game in week 0, good thing for NA that Woody ran out of time on their last drive, and stayed for the nightcap of PCC vs. LaSalle, and saw PCC vs. PR last week at CMU, going to TJ vs. McKeesport tomorrow night. Based on what I’ve seen in person the last 2 weeks I think PCC is better than NA this year, we’ll see in a few weeks when they play, as I posted in my write up after the game last week PCC improved a good bit from week 0 to week 1, hard to say if NA did because Gateway is very mediocre this year like last year, and they play Penn Hills this week who is also down a lot this year, so that will likely be another mercy rule game.

  5. Week 3 Picks. Games are a little more under the radar this week

    – Wilkes Barre vs. Valley View (LFC 1): A trip up to Peckville is in store for the Wolf Pack. Valley View’s defense looks great, but I like Wilkes-Barre in this one since the offense is rolling. They may say that defense wins games, but a good offense can make that not true. Might be an upset. Might not be.

    – Old Forge vs. Mid Valley (LFC 2): Sneaky game here. Old Forge can be a competitive team, but Mid Valley is also competitive in the small school showdowns. They just have started off slow. I’ll take Sparty here.

    – Lakeland vs. Riverside (LFC 3): On paper, you might not think much, but the Chiefs could challenge Riverside for a third week in a row. This is a team that could‘be been a few situations away from being 0-2. While Lakeland is noticeably better than last year, Riverside gets this one.

    – Dallas vs. Abington Heights (WVC 1): A real beaut of a crossover happening up in the Pit. The Mounties & Comets play in a game that may make things interesting in the seeding in 4A & 5A at the end of the year. I feel it’s an Abington kind of game. Dallas looked better, but I feel it won’t be enough.

    – Lackawanna Trail vs. Berwick (WVC 2): This matchup should be better than last year. Berwick is better than last year. Trail is still top dog. Sticking with the Wing-T.

    – Honesdale vs. Wallenpaupack (LFC HM): I always find this game intriguing & it might be the bias to being from the area. Both teams want to win this game no matter what happens the rest of the year. This edition will be played on the shores of Lake Wallenpaupack. While Honesdale is going to be a better team & coached (Howanitz has been there & done that) than Paupack, I’m going with recent history & taking the deer in a familiar result.

    – Western Wayne vs. Wyoming Area (WVC HM): Not as flashy as last year, but there’s not enough left in the pot to choose from. This will have decent playoff implications depending on how the Wildcats fare in 3A. The Warriors should handle this game, but if the Wildcats can get some confidence out of this with a young squad, that’s a win for them.

    – Delaware Valley vs. Central York (D2 HM): I think we all know what’s gonna happen. Central York is a nice opponent down in D3 & should control the game enough to hold off DV. Maybe DV should consider a change to the scheduling philosophy to get more winnable games. At least they were in the last one.

    – Scranton Prep vs. Canisius NY (Crossover): Honestly, there’s not much to talk about in D2 that isn’t the weaker teams, so let’s do a PA/NY affair. Last picks with them, I’ve had losses with. I feel Prep won’t get their first win this week. Canisius seems like a tough one to play.

    – Nativity vs. Williams Valley (Subregion): While Marian & T-V are playing mercy rule games & Billtown is playing in D6 country, this game has the feel of being best in 1A/6A. Williams Valley should win, since I think BVM is rebuilding.

    Scores
    – WBA 22, VV 20
    – MV 31, OF 19
    – Riverside 26, Lakeland 16
    – AH 27, Dallas 21
    – Trail 31, Berwick 14
    – Paupack 19, Honesdale 13
    – Wyo 42, WW 14
    – CY 28, DV 10
    – Canisius 35, SP 10
    – WV 38, Nativity 13

  6. On the topic of non-league games, Emmaus and Phillipsburg have scheduled a game for 2026 and 2027. Exciting to see an old East Penn matchup return.

    1. I’ll give some sneaky ones, since all of mine were taken (especially Dunmore vs. LFC I. Last time I think it happened was COVID & Paupack actually held with them for a lot of the game). Dunmore/Prep were going to play during COVID, but it got cancelled.
      – Southern Columbia vs. Troy: Would be an exciting regular season game every year
      – Southern Columbia vs. EPC: Would like to see how they fare against ACC/Beca or a 5A sized team. I’d even say more District 2 games like Prep & Valley View (scrimmages already)
      – Solehi vs. EPC: Solehi can hold their own against a Whitehall or mid-tier EPC team. Maybe not a Parkland.
      – DV vs. ES South: The best teams in the Poconos. Could really benefit both teams
      – Northwestern Lehigh vs. Valley View/Dallas: I’d love to see this. This would be a heck of a game. You could even add SP & Wyo Area to this
      – Aliquippa vs. 5A teams: Just to prove that they could’ve hung in 5A.

      For the not-so-intriguing
      – Wallenpaupack/Honesdale vs. Bangor/Wilson/JT/Lehighton: I think these schools would match up well against the lower-end 3A/4A Colonial League teams.
      – William Allen/Dieruff vs. Lebanon, Reading, or West Scranton/WVW. How are these teams not playing each other? They’re comparable at 5A/6A level

      Wild Cards
      – Wyoming Seminary vs. D2 Teams: I’d like to see what Prep League Sem can do against D2. I don’t know where they match up, but Dallas, VV, Dunmore, Wyoming Area probably gives them a game (or the other way around). If anything, mid-tier D2 teams (usual North Pocono, Mid Valley, Paupack, Lake-Lehman) probably can put up competitive games
      – Port Jervis vs. Dunmore/Wyo Area/Scranton Prep: PJ is the defending Class C (3A equivalent? in NY) champ in football. It’s only an hour plus between them & Scranton/W-B (about the same for DV) & they’d probably give the PA schools a fun challenge.
      – Maine-Endwell vs. above: Same as above. Would like more PA/NY in general.

And on the whole EPC butchering the division realignment, I still believe that the Monroe County teams should separate & move to the Lackawanna League or form a new-age Mountain Valley Conference. Add in DV, Wallenpaupack, Honesdale, & maybe Allen/Dieruff (associate in football, at least). In other sports they offer, most of these teams would match up well against one another. They all struggle in the valley, but do hold their own elsewhere. DV & South would own football, but elsewhere, you’d see some good parity, except if ES North continues to struggle at everything.

      1. Another WPIAL powerhouse who should play some bigger schools is TJ, I can’t remember the last time they played a game against a school from a larger classification. They play 3A Central Valley and Avonworth this year, I get CV because that turned into a big rivalry in the old 4 class days after CV was formed in 2010, but why did the WPIAL schedule them against Avonworth too? I would much rather see them play their fellow South Hills schools like Peters, USC or Bethel, it would benefit TJ come playoff time by playing better competition during the regular season.

As I mentioned in a previous post the WPIAL scheduled McKeesport against Peters and USC, but TJ gets 3A schools CV and Avonworth, I don’t get it, we’ll see who they schedule TJ against for the next 2 yr cycle.

        1. @ Jeff H

I was going to say TJ, too. They absolutely should play 5A opponents. Quip, I can see why they would have that issue & yeah, the 9-game situation definitely helps them not have that attrition factor, but I’d like to see a Moon/Quip matchup. A lot of the WPIAL mid-sized greats should play up for a game or two.

      2. Ironically the current setup is probably the best possible situation for the Monroe teams: a single 6-team division in a stable league. It’s the Lehigh teams that get the shorter end of the stick, particularly Allen and Dieruff. I’m glad that the teams are scheduling well out-of-conference but it would definitely be better for the long-term development of Allentown football for those schools to be in the same division as the North teams.

      3. @D2 Fan – I too would like to see Aliquippa play a few more 5A teams, they played Penn Hills last year and lost and play them in a few weeks and will likely win by several scores since PH is down significantly this year, they are the only 5A team on their schedule. I would love to see them play Woodland Hills, that would be a great game this year, and maybe USC or Bethel Park, but they would get worn down if they played a full 5A schedule in the WPIAL due to lack of numbers, 5A is a real meat grinder out here and I think they would lose the war of attrition by the end of the season if they played 10 games against 5A WPIAL schools. One of the factors that prevents them from playing another 5A team is they do not play in week 0 and instead have a 2nd scrimmage, so they only play 9 regular season games, they have done that since the PIAA created week 0 games with the move to 6 classes.

The WPIAL has scheduled McKeesport the last 2 years against 5A heavyweights Peters Twp and Upper St Clair, so if they are scheduling McKeesport against those schools there’s no reason they can’t schedule the Quips against some more top 5A schools, they are not all that far geographically from Moon, who is usually pretty solid and dominated 4A Montour last week, so that’s another 5A school they could play that would be a good matchup.

  7. OK, something a little different. Looking through a slew of schedules and scores recently, came up with a wish list of regular season games that I would have loved to see this year. Some are games that really should be played, or have been played in the recent years, or just potential fun interesting competitive match-ups.

Southern Columbia/North Schuylkill – Really not that far apart geographically. They must have tangled at some point.
Wyomissing/Northwestern Lehigh – Played a real good PIAA state 3A game a couple of years ago. NW Lehigh I see only two competitive games for them.
Exeter/Wilson West Lawn – Thought this is a no brainer. You D3 guys, who is Exeter’s biggest challenge this season?? Not impressed with their schedule.
Parkland/Easton – Another no brainer. Parkland has Dieruff, Allen, Pleasant Valley and GW out of D12 Philly Pub league, but no Easton?? Really??
Souderton/North Penn – Third no brainer. Adjacent school districts with great sport rivalries, but no football game??
    Souderton/Pennridge – See above.
Imhotep/Roman Catholic – Played some nice D12 5A championship games recently before Imhotep got promoted to 6A.
Imhotep/Chester – Played a good game early last season. Chester’s regular season schedule is far from inspiring.
St. Joe Prep/Malvern Prep – Seem just like natural. They did play annually up until about 10 years ago. Maybe get together in the future??

Any others?? Personal wish list of realistic hypothetical games??

    1. I would like to see dunmore play the schedule from the big 11 days. they had big crowds when they played valley view, abington heights, scranton, north pocono as well as riverside, lakeland, mid valley and old forge. I realize conventional wisdom says they can’t compete but i think if you play lousy teams you sink to that level gradually. they used to compete very successfully and i believe they still can. i forgot to include scranton prep, lackawanna trail and western wayne. these schools are in close proximity, provide better competition, and produce larger crowds and excitement.

    2. EPC realignment was so poorly handled. I like the reintroduction of non-conference games but not at the expense of games like Parkland-Easton which should happen every year. It would have been so simple to just have a 10-team EPC South division and it would’ve been one of the most competitive divisions in the entire state.

It is also long overdue to swap Souderton and Abington within the SOL. Not only would they be more competitive but it makes more geographic sense as well.

Here are some additional choices of mine:

Lebanon/Reading – Both urban schools that have struggled for a while. It’s a failure of the Berks-LL partnership that Lebanon and Reading aren’t in the same division.
Lampeter-Strasburg/Conestoga Valley – I know they scrimmed but cmon, this should be a regular season game
Rustin/Garnet Valley – 2 of the best 5A programs in D1 only located 6 miles apart
Line Mtn/Williams Valley – A great small-school rivalry lost to conference realignment
Lackawanna Trail/Troy – I would love to see these two northern PA small schools duke it out
Chester/Coatesville – I think it’s fair to say these two are the premier urban programs in D1, a game between them would be fantastic

      1. Chester/ Coatesville would be a good game now… they never played before I think mainly because Chester wasnt very good in football for many yrs. They were so good in basketball, football almost seemed like an after thought. Their football program has improved in recent yrs. Coatesville has always had a strong football program. It would be an interesting non conf game now.

  8. D2 Notes for you on this Labor Day Monday. Went 7-3 missing Valley View, Montrose, & Marian

    – DV vs. Shore was a case for the game of the week. Shore got to a quick 28-14 halftime lead & ballooned it to 42, but DV went on a 21 pt run late in the game. The Warriors drove late but a turnover cost them a shot at a tie.

    – What happened in the WBA/Stroudsburg game? Well, it went to OT, had a couple lead changes, & both scored over 40 pts. Solid win for the Pack as they use their defense late to give them the edge. Valley View is next for WBA & that could be a big game!

    – Wyo Area/Dallas was closer than I thought. The Mounties led for a bit, but the WVC Warriors went on a tear to score the final 20 pts & take a win

    – Valley View looked great against Crestwood in a defensive show, beating them 24-13.

    – Riverside held off a furious upset bid by Hanover Area. Very surprised that Riverside didn’t blow them out. I guess the Hawkeyes are a lot better than I thought.

    – Montrose upset Susquehanna on Saturday (if you can call it that) to snap a 9-game losing streak in the rivalry.

    – Marian beating Tri-Valley was surprising. For those in the know, am I missing anything on either team?

  9. It looks like Coatesville is in store for a bounce back season! The last few were rough and very unlike the traditional Coatesville squads over the last decades, Very strong defense with Penn State signee Terrance Wiggins at LB/TE and a very potent air attack with multiple speedy, sure handed WR’s! The win Friday night was a dogfight down to the wire, against the #4 team in Delaware, watch out district 1 and the rest of the state, the Red Raiders are back to normal and back to business!

  10. Wyomissing takes down The Haverford School @ Wyo….29-26. That was a full blown Slobberknocker! Pads were popping! A lot of talent on that field today.
    Big W by the Spartans

  11. Don’t read too much into Peters beating McKeesport 35-0. Kemon Spell turned an ankle in practice and did not play, they were missing a few other starters who got hurt last week against Del Valley, and their offense had no chance against Peters very solid defense. Peters is a top 5 team in the state in 5A, they are very good and appear to be on a collision course with PR for third year in a row for WPIAL title, but Woodland Hills may have something to say about that, nothing better than mercy ruling your arch rival on their home field, as Woody led 20-0 after the first, 34-0 at half, and then 41-0 in third to invoke the mercy rule and coasted to a 41-7 victor over Penn Hills. This is Woody’s best team in a decade, but I don’t think they are at the level of PR/Peters.

4A Mars beat 5A Bethel Park 17-13 on a last minute TD, very nice win for the Fighting Planets on the road against a solid BP team, coach K is starting to build something in Mars, they look like the 4th best team in 4A behind the big 3 of TJ, McKeesport and the Quips, who blew out BV last night.

      1. They also had some offensive lineman who did not play, not too many teams in the state can overcome missing their star running back and several offensive lineman against a really good highly ranked opponent from a bigger classification. We’ll see how they do this week against TJ if they have all their guys back.

  12. I’ve been to hundreds of football games over the last 50+ years, between high school, college and NFL, and I have never seen a game start with 2 consecutive kickoff returns for TDs. Central opened the game with a 100 yard return, the returners foot was in the end zone but it looked like the ball never crossed the plane of the goal line, it was close, but officially a 100 yard return. Then Khalil Taylor from PR returned the ensuing kick 95 yards and it was 7-7 just 28 seconds into the game. After a few exchange of possessions by each team Pine took the lead with a 35 yard TD pass to Jay Timmons, then Central tied the score at 14 midway through the second, Pine answered with a 54 yard TD run by their QB, but PAT was blocked, PCC put together a nice drive aided by some PR penalties and scored with 25 seconds left to take a 21-20 lead into the locker room.

PR got the 2nd half kick but went 3 and out and actually lost yardage, which set PCC up in great field position in PR territory after the punt, they scored on a 4 play drive to take a 28-20 lead. PR went 3 and out on their next 2 possessions, and PCC drove inside the pine 10 yard line twice but came away with no points on a missed field goal and turnover on downs. PR finally move the ball some on offense and got a few first downs, but they only threatened once to score in second half and that drive ended on an interception in the red zone, PCC tacked on a late TD with about a minute to go in the game to make the final score 34-20.

PCC dominated the second half at the line of scrimmage on both sides and held potent PR offense to 84 yards, they were more intense and wanted the game more after losing 3 yrs in a row. PR seemed to be deflated after PCC took the lead right before half, they outplayed them but 2 turnovers in PCC territory cost them a chance for more points, and the wind seemed to go out of their sails in the second half, the coach admitted as much on TribLive and said he would address the lack of intensity and enthusiasm and energy in the 2nd half at practice this week. I was impressed with PPC, they improved a good bit from their game last week against LaSalle, they look a lot better than NA, would be very surprised if PCC doesn’t win WPIAL, beat State College in quarterfinals, then plays D3 winner in western final, not exactly going out on a limb with that prediction since 6A in the WPIAL sucks.

  13. Seeing Easton for first time ever in person. Great historical program, but have to say the band is tremendous 308 strong and they play the whole game..Reminded me of what it was like yrs ago at many high school games. Easton has too much speed for Spring – Ford who could be in for a rough start to the season with both Downingtowns the next two weeks after tonight.

    1. I would be surprised if ESS beat Northampton, the latter has had the former’s number the past few years and based on week 1 results I’m not sure this is the year that trend reverses. I also think Easton wins more comfortably vs. S-F, the Rams looked pretty bad against Souderton and I am high on Easton as being one of the best teams in the EPC this year.

    2. Pine Richland has beaten PCC 3 years in a row, and I think they make it 4 tonight as they appear to be the best team in the WPIAL this year. PR has the advantage at QB and skill positions, PCC in the trenches, although I think PR can match up pretty well along the lines. I am going to this game tonight being played on the campus of Carnegie Mellon and will post a report.

I also see you picked Penn Hills over my Woodland Hills squad, that’s one of the fiercest rivalries in the WPIAL. Penn Hills laid an egg last week in a 12-0 loss to 4A New Castle and was shut out for the first time in 5yrs. I think Woody has too many weapons and they win this game by a couple of scores.

Another heavyweight matchup tonight is Peters vs. McKeesport. Peters mercy ruled them last year 42-7, I do think McKeesport has closed the gap significantly, but Peters has a very good defense led by a couple of Power 4 linebackers and expect they will not let Kemon Spell run wild like he did last week against DV, they also have a very balanced offense, Peters wins again but a lot closer than last year.

I agree with your other WPIAL picks, although I think Imani beats Beaver Falls by several scores, I also think the Quips beat Belle Vernon by more than you predicted, a couple of other games like Montour-Moon and Steel Valley – Wash High are tossups and could go either way.

  15. Another year, another NW dominant win in the Mountain Road Rumble. Was NW really 56-13 better than NL, probably not but the biggest difference in my opinion was the lines and coaching, with coaching probably being the biggest gap.

I am not sure after seeing that game that NL has a chance to win D11 2A, they could, they have the athletes but that was a poor showing.

On the other hanf, NW hasn’t missed a beat, they look reloaded and ready to compete for the 3A title again, despite a great mix of sophomores through seniors.

    1. As an NL alum, yeah NWL is on a whole new level recently. Size and skill wise. Hell they are on another level than most Lehigh valley teams lately (first valley team in a decade and a half to win a state champ). But I think NL still will win 7-8 games when they play more teams their size this year. They are a solid AA team and play mostly juniors. Next year could be a very good year for NL but still not in same cat as NWL. I believe NL wanted to have a better showing no doubt but I think NWL repeats in AAA statewide. And yeah, SH definitely favorite in dist 11 AA and maybe statewide. Gone are the days where NL dominated NWL. They won 9 straight years from 03-12. Every once in a while an NL team will give them a game like 2021 and 2022. Those teams from NL were special and made state runs.

      1. I am with you there, 7 or 8 wins and still a lot of season left to gel or make adjustments. I wouldn’t count them out in 2A yet, but let’s see how they progress after this low.

My buddy is a NL alum and hes been pretty disappointed lately with the program, more so coaching, not the kids. I tend to agree with him, I think they leave some to be desired from a play calling or x’s and o’s standpoint.

The NL area has changed a lot over the years, just like it has in NW. I don’t believe you will see as many teams at NL over the next 20 years, like they had in the previous 20.

        1. I think NL will be around 7-3 this year and may win a playoff game and next year could be special with those 3 year starting seniors. They only have three starting seniors this year but after next couple years, they could be a drop at NL again. But such is life with small schools these days

        2. Yep. The head coach has had success with 15 district playoff wins and 5 state playoff wins in his 20 seasons as well as over 120 wins but I know there has been change in other coaching positions there in recent years. And yep, the numbers aren’t what they were there 20 years ago. They may even fall back to A next year again.

    2. NW Is very well aware and disciplined! That program is only getting better as the years go bye.
I do believe they are as good offensively as they were last year!
The defense is still very good. watching the coaches during the game consistently teaching and coaching them is the difference in that program!

    3. Would not be surprised to see a rematch in the 3A final between NW and Avonworth, obviously a lot can happen between now and December, but I think those 2 have to be the favorites for now.

      1. Jeff H, I think NS and ND will have something to say about that though. Two great programs with teams this year that have closed the gap and trying to prove that.

In my opinion, I’d go as far to say, D11 should absolutely have a team in the state final, whether it is NW, NS or ND.

I also feel like SL in 4A if they can get past Bonner does, along with SH or WV. A lot to be excited for in D11 between those classes.

        1. @ D11 Fan – ND always has a great offense but their defense is usually pretty suspect and gives up lots of yards and points, I think NW is a lot more balanced and better than ND, I don’t know a lot about NS. I do agree there’s a very good chance D11 represents the east in the 3A state final. Not sure about SL getting past Bonner, do they have the team speed to match up with them? If I’m picking the 4A final now I’d take Bonner vs. McKeesport.

  16. Pope John Paul 20-19 over Shawnee Nice to see a huge S. Jersey Squad play a district 1 school. PJP opened up a 2 score lead at half only to see Shawnee come roaring back in the 2nd half behind their huge offensive line, a missed extra point was the difference. PJP’S scrappy defense, which was wearing down in the 2nd half, got a huge stop on downs with 4 minutes to go and the offense hit a huge 3rd and eight pass to run the clock out.

    1. Was a good game, PJP has talent at the skill positions, experienced and not as big up front this year but should get better as the yr progresses..Well coached

    1. Just to put a little context behind this, you can file this game under you’d rather be lucky than good. North Penn was lucky. Count their four leaf clover lucky. They sure weren’t good. Not bad, maybe Coach Bech with disagree with that, but I won’t go that far. I’d call them mistake prone clunky. Anyways…….21-14 NP up with a few second left in the game, CRS had a 4th and forever from around their own 40. Obvious Hail Mary coming up. And it was, and CRS prayers were answered (initially) as they made the catch and TD on what appeared to be the final play of regulation. PAT away from tying, I was assuming they’d go for 2. Moot point as there was a holding penalty called on CRS. Despite the penalty on CRS, they got one more crack at it as a game can’t end on a penalty. No miracle ending this time as the CRS QB was sacked. Game over and NP held on by a holding penalty for a 21-14 win.

      1. UGH!!!!, one more correction…..hope that’s it!!!! I really need to do a better job of proof-reading before hitting “post comment.” CRS was on North Penn’s 40 yard line for their Hail Mary attempt. 40 yard heave, not 60. Kudos to the CRS QB (and to the CRS overall team). A nice duel threat QB. CRS will win their share of games this season. I could see them being a double digit (10-16) seed in the D1 6A playoffs.

  17. Week 2 of NEPA football brings back a LOT of quality matchups from last year. Let’s take a look

    – Jersey Shore vs. Delaware Valley (LFC 1): You know, this is a quality matchup. Shore got the best of DV last time, but I feel like DV can compete against the Bulldogs. I’ll take Shore, but this is going to probably be a tight one.

    – Mid Valley vs. Berwick (LFC 2): Road trip for LFC 2’s spotlight game. Berwick avenged a 3A foe in Lake-Lehman, while Mid Valley got dominated by Pittston. I feel Mid Valley’s starting 0-2 here, but I think this is a sneaky game.

    – Dunmore vs. Old Forge (LFC 3): While Old Forge is still down, this is still a marquee matchup at its core. Both are coming off of kind of surprising losses. I’d say Bucktown takes down Pizzatown, but nothing’s guaranteed.

    – Valley View vs. Crestwood (WVC 1): This game will have a lot to say about the 4A race & who’s seeded where. The Cougars got a nice win over Prep, while Crestwood fared okay in a loss against Wyoming Area. I think Crestwood wins due to having the experience, but this can potentially be closer than expected.

    – Wyoming Area vs. Dallas (WVC 2): The WVC 2 slate is meh with blowout crossovers, so here’s the best of the bunch. Two neighboring districts. Two good powerhouses. While Dallas is still getting its feet wet with some new offensive pieces, Wyo Area feels primed to contend. I’ll take the Warriors in a wider margin of victory (likely not as high scoring either)

    – Montrose vs. Susquehanna (LFC HM): Shoutout to the Battle of the Bluestone for having the 2nd or 3rd most interesting all-LFC game this week. I chose this over Trail/WW & AH/WS because there’s something about a rivalry game. Plus, we don’t know who WW is because beating Susquehanna is one thing. Trail probably takes it though. & Abington should beat West Scranton. This is an easy win for Susquehanna & while it’s cliche, I’d rather put the rivalry & give some love to Montrose for having a rivalry game as an indie.

    – Stroudsburg vs. Wilkes-Barre (WVC HM): This is a sneaky game. Wilkes-Barre is really good, yet we need to pay attention to Stroudsburg. They took this game last year. I’ll say they split the home & home in both venues. Give me the Pack!

    – North Pocono vs. Pittston (D2 HM): I did say that I was going to consider. This is a game that now is more intriguing than last year. The Patriots demolished Mid Valley. North Pocono did the same to GNA. I think there’s a slight upset potential, but North Pocono is the better team.

    – Hazleton vs. Williamsport (Crossover): Hazleton takes a roadtrip to Billtown this week in a 6A seeding implication game. It was the Millionaires’ sweeping the WVC Cougars last year. I’ll stick with the history & say Billtown holds on.

    – Tri-Valley vs. Marian (1A/6A Watch): Not one, but two seeding implication games. EVERY game in 1A matters. This is a potential either district championship winning decider or sneak peek at the D-11 final. Based on my knowledge of D-11 football, Tri-Valley should take it. Also, Nativity plays Pine Grove (& that should be an easy dub).

    Scores
    – Shore 28, DV 22
    – Berwick 28, MV 17
    – Dunmore 24, OF 14
    – Crestwood 28, VV 16
    – Wyo Area 35, Dallas 13
    – Susq. 21, Montrose 7
    – WBA 29, S’burg 13
    – NP 31, Pittston 14
    – Billtown 26, Hazleton 20
    – T-V 30, Marian 19

Thursday Picks Elsewhere (Will do rest later)
    – Shawnee (NJ) vs. PJP: PJP 24, Shawnee 13
    – Executive Education vs. Berks Catholic: BC 27, EE 10
    – Juniata vs. Steel-High: S-H 20, Juniata 14
    – Redbank Valley vs. Union/A-C Valley: RV 35, U/A-CV 13
    – Northwestern Lehigh vs. Northern Lehigh: NWL 42, NL 10

  18. Gotta love some of these Philly area schools taking an early Labor Day holiday and playing games on a Thursday night. Makes for a nice early season Thursday/Friday night back to back. Heading over to North Penn’s home opener this evening against Council Rock South. Curious to see how much of a game CRS can give NP. I understand CRS returns 10 kids on both sides of the ball.

Looking at heading back to Central Bucks South tomorrow evening as they are hosting Souderton. Anybody have suggestions on another Philly area game to check out?? Not married to the Soudy/CBS game as I was just there last Friday, but not seeing much else to move the needle to travel further to. O’Hara/Wood and Haverford/Garnet (that’s a hike tho) are distant thoughts.

  19. Any thoughts on mt. Carmel changing there offense? A qb who appears to have a good arm is now taking snaps under center and almost going against the talent they have. I don’t mind because I’m a north schuylkill person, but mount carmel people can’t be happy.

    1. I’ve never seen a Mount Carmel team play like that. Granted they’re just flat out not as good as a few years ago. But completely discombobulated offensely and just wacky defensively.

NS will be really tough and that 3A bracket should be fun. NS reminds me of last year’s Northwestern. Duel threat QB with a lightning fast back. They may not be the biggest defensively but they can absolutely fly and will still hit you.

  20. Later than I wanted to release, but here’s Week 1’s D2 Notes! Went 8-2 on the week, thanks to Abington Heights & Riverside flipping outcomes. Both games, I was so close going with the latter. In fact, I flipped AH/ESS the second I reviewed them.

Game Of The Week: Dunmore vs. Riverside fit the bill & went to OT! As someone said here, this was a winnable game for Dunmore, but they made a few mistakes & gave the game away. It was a weird game at times. Dunmore had a few drives stalled by penalties, Riverside struggled to move down the field at times, which led to OT. The difference was in OT with a FG by Santino D’Amico. What’s crazy is that Dunmore outgained the Vikes 310-96. Dunmore gets Old Forge, while Riverside gets the no-brainer pick of the week against Hanover Area, who had a respectable game Friday Night.

Is Prep Beatable?: Valley View must’ve had a chip on their shoulder heading into Saturday’s game. In a thriller & defensive-laden showdown, the LFC Cougars turned away Prep from inside the 20 twice in the first half. Valley View took advantage of long drives to stall out momentum & Prep was at least putting in decent drives. It makes me wonder if this is growing pains with a new Prep offense or a sign that a few more teams, even Wyo Area, has a shot in LFC 1 & 3A.

Is Pittston Legit?: So, my record prediction for Pittston might age like spoiled milk. They didn’t just beat Mid Valley, but blew the doors off of them, 46-9. For those in the valley (either one), am I missing something on both Pittston & Mid Valley? Impressive first win for Paul Russick. They get North Pocono & I maybe might have to keep a close eye on this as a D2 HM pick next week.

Wyo Area Squeaks Past Crestwood: Best WVC game was Wyoming Area beating Crestwood, 24-21. The Warriors saw their QB & RB run both for 100. Jaden Shedlock had a pretty serviceable game throwing for 237. Wyo Area goes up to Dallas, while Crestwood welcomes the Cougars to town. Expect both to be in the picks for Week 2.

One 10+ Game Winless Streak Snapped: West Scranton has won a game! This is not a drill! Turnovers win games, folks. The sealer was a 90-yard Pick 6 by Kaz Colbert to steal a win against Old Forge. This 12-game losing streak is gone & it’s a big win for coach Jake Manetti, being against his alma mater. Could they make it 2/2 against Abington Heights? Probably not, but this is huge! No pressure, Valley West.

Interdistrict Struggles: Only two teams from D2 won their crossover game, both against East Stroudsburg opponents
    – Honesdale beat ES North, which isn’t surprising. They trailed 9-0 at the half & controlled the second.
    – Abington Heights beat ES South, which kind of could’ve gone either way, on paper.
    – DV got destroyed by McK, but at least wasn’t to a level of Boone-Exeter. Read Jeff’s discussion for more on that. He summed up some of the performances well. Kemon Spell, have an afternoon!
    – Hazleton & WBA lost to Nazareth & Whitehall out of the EPC, as expected.
    – Wallenpaupack kept it close & tied with Stroudsburg early but was overmatched late by the Mounties’ 3 unanswered TDs in the second half.
    – Scranton got doubled up by PM West, which that surprised me.
    – Dallas lost to Shore, but they have a new offense.
    – Hanover Area & Holy Redeemer lost to Marian/Nativity, which was expected.
    – Valley West lost to Billtown in a rout.

May look over Week 1 across the state & give thoughts tomorrow. Didn’t have a great showing, especially in crossover games. I always struggle Week 1 though. Plus, I added a few WPIAL games that may’ve been scrimmages, so that’s on me for not doing better research with EPA’s master schedule page.

    1. PM West is going to be interesting to follow this season. They’re a bit low on numbers for a 6A school so it’s possible they’ll lose steam down the stretch. However, they’re always well-coached and rarely bottom out. Even then, I was surprised at how easily they beat Scranton, it was 31-7 at the half and Scranton’s late surge was too little too late. The meeting between Scranton and Valley West next week bears watching, if Scranton loses then it could be a long season for them.

  21. watched dunmore vs, riverside riverside won but dunmore actually gave the game away. dunmore had 18 first downs to 3 for riverside. 266 yds. rushing to 22 . Dunmore had 33 passing yds. to 70 for riverside. riverside scored on a kickoff return and a shuttle pass which accounted for about 45 of the passing yards. dunmore fumbled to stop drives, including at the 2 yard line on 2nd down in overtime. also numerous drive killing penalties. the bucks have developed a penchant for coming out of a timeout and then committing an illegal motion penalty or some other infraction. not sure why,but it’s tough to watch. Riverside has a good coach who is able to squeeze the most out of whatever the situation present’s. very tough loss for dunmore.

  22. @Kevin X – for some reason I couldn’t continue our thread about LaSalle/Gavin Sidwar, I made some comments to Frank about him, but I’d add some in response to your question about his throwing motion. It is a bit unique, he has very good arm strength and kind of just flicks his wrist to throw on some passes and at different angles, I was impressed with some of the throws he made. I don’t know his stats from last night but his receivers dropped at least 6 easily catchable balls, he’s got good size but I’m sure the Missouri coaches would like to see him add 10-15 pounds, I can definitely see him starting for them within the next few years, and if you’re a starting QB in the SEC you’re pretty good!

    1. Thanks Jeff. Sounds like you hit upon a good (and long) afternoon and evening of high school football to start your 2025 season. I did see your other posts.

I ended up at the Wood/CB South game, an entertaining game despite an abundance of penalty flags and second half cramping (by the players, not me!!!).

Fun fact, another local Philly kid, Matt Zollers from Spring-Ford, who unfortunately broke his lower leg (or ankle??) early last season is a freshman QB at Mizzou. And Penn State (yeah, Penn State), and I believe Central York?? grad, Beau Pribula is a grad transfer QB this year in the Show Me State as well.

      1. That’s interesting there may be 3 QBs on Missouri’s depth chart next year from Eastern PA, although with the transfer portal who knows if both Pribula and Zollers will still be there. Pribula did go to Central York, he was their QB when they lost in the 2020 state championship game to SJP.
