  1. Just wanted to reinforce what a charter school is. This is from the school district of Philadelphia’s website. Q; What is a charter school? A; Charter schools are independently operated PUBLIC schools that are funded with federal, state, and local tax dollars.

If a charter school does not offer a sport that a child wants to play, that child has 2 options. He/She can play for the closest public school to their charter school, or the closest public school to their home. The student is not permitted to play for any Catholic school. Wanna know why? Because these students are part of the school district of Philadelphia public school system. Stop with the 8 public, 7 Catholic, 1 charter jazz. There are 9 public and 7 Catholic teams left. 80% of the teams in Philly public league AA are charters. Let’s try this again. Why are 80% of AA Philly pub charters? Because they are PUBLIC schools!

  2. @eric,
I am going to try to approach your lack of knowledge as to what a charter school is. I think you may be under the impression that a charter school is like a mini college campus. Beautiful flowers, women, architecture, and lots of money. Far from it. Charter schools are public schools that are not held to the same academic standards as traditional public schools. They pop up like mushrooms, and can be run by anybody that wants to apply for a license. There is no comparison between a charter school and a Catholic school.

Next time you want to compare the Catholic vs public thing, please take a look at Kmac’s comment. Any way you want to spin it, the public schools have dominated. Stop trying to find a reason to hate Philly. I’m sure you have plenty, why look for more?

  3. @Eric

That’s because football is more competitive in the inner city. You think that’s bad, google Philly youth program and see how many make the Fla super bowl.

Bottom-line is this, every year we hear Catholic and Charter has an unfair advantage. But every year we show the same whiners the win lost records of Catholics and Charters as compared to public and its not even close. Every year we show how the four champions outnumber Catholics (last year 3 out 4 were public).
Every year you guys see a public dominated championship team raise the trophy in hershey.. But you still complain..

Remember: Over the past 5 years there have been 20 champions; 13 public, 7 Catholic, and 0 charters… Where is your argument? Please explain!!!

  4. Lets see district 12 has so much of an advantage over any othet district there are 4 eastern games this week and 3 of them have district 12 teams so its right in front of everybodies eyes and 2 are catholic and 1 charter

  5. @ everyone,

I think we all know that the way things are right now are not likely to change….There are a few who have mentioned what they think the PIAA should do to level the playing field but for the most part it seems like most just complain. So for the heck of it I ask everyone to finish this sentence. If tomorrow I was left in charge of the PIAA I would do this…………

  6. General

Because it seems to be a great interest right now, the first 25 years of state titles (1988 through 2012) have seen 100 championships in all four classes. Champions have been 18 Catholic, 1 private (Shady Side Academy), and 81 public. A total of 17 Catholic Schools have appeared 34 times, and 11 have produced the 18 championships. A total of 98 schools have appeared at finals, 17 Catholic, 2 private (Shady Side & Scotland School), and 79 public.

  7. Pep Rally Friday afternoon. On the corner of Mercer and Rt 11, right out front of Skippy’s auto sales. Everybody is gonna be there! We are all driving down to the game in our discounted Skippy’s pickups right after the rally. Coach Curry is gonna make an appearance wearing his 1925 throwback Jersey. Be there or be square, go dogs! I mean dawgs, darn spell check.

  8. @eric, you want some cheese to go with the whine…those 3 starting seniors came to the school as freshman and 2 couldn’t sniff the field as freshman for a team who didn’t make the states. They worked their behinds off and now are reaping the benefits of their hard work. Stop it already and begin to discover some class. Catty had a great season but instead you and others decided to come on here the past couple of weeks and start with every excuse of why they wouldn’t win and how unfair it was before the kids even lined up. Those kids gave a gutsy performance so why not celebrate the great season they had.

If you want to complain about something, complain about the borderline negligence of allowing kids with torn ACL’s play in the game. Kids health should always come first, even if you are protecting them from themselves.

  9. @eric,
I tried to decipher your comment, and I think you are trying to say public schools can’t compete with Catholic and charters. Over the past 5 years there have been 20 champions. 13 public, 7 Catholic, and 0 charters. What is the point you are trying to make?

  10. Do you guys remember back in 1925 when coach Curry was the starting QB, RB, WR, LB, DL, and kicker for Berwick? We had an exhibition game scheduled against the Jim Thorpe led New York Giants. Nobody told the Giants and they didn’t show up. Dogs 2 Giants 0, Forfeit, we win! Wood who? Anything can happen on any given day, GO DOGS. I mean dawgs, spell check has no idea what a dawg is, sorry.

  11. I think the piaa should do something and put bounderies up for catholic and charter school public school have no shot for a state titles imhoteps line was as big as collage lines you cant tell me they dont recrute

  12. PCL Fan
You know who else owns SEPA? Central PA. Over the past 5 years, D3 has 4 state championships in AAAA, AAA, and AA. So, if you want to include WC’s AA championship, SEPA is looking up at yet another district.

And, as far as the PCL/D12 becoming “the top district in the State in terms of state championships outside of class A since the PCL joined the PIAA”, no chance. You would need IC, Wood, and St Joe’s all to win state titles. It’s possible, but not likely.

  13. PCL Fan
Re-read my post. Cheer and I are talking “big boy” football. I take that to mean AAAA and AAA. West Catholic won in AA.

Over the past 5 years D7 has 2 AAAA titles and 1 AAA title. D12/D1 has 1 AAAA and 1 AAA.

If you want me to consider WC’s AA championship, then I will gladly include D7 Clairton’s 4 single A titles.

So, no matter how you calculate it, the WPIAL owns SEPA!

  14. @ Jim B

The PCL/D12 has 3 state titles in the PCL 5 years of play. Same as D7 if you don’t include Class A. Not bad for a small league and district. D1 has underperformed for most of the past decade. After this season the PCL/D12 has a good chance to be the top district in the State in terms of state championships outside of class A since the PCL joined the PIAA.

Like you said just the facts.

  15. @17th & G

“My hats off to the PCL and PPL hardened warriors representing the City of Philadelphia.”

Boo hoo.. Poor private school city kids. LMAO.. So, how many of those teams can you count that can honestly compete regularly at the state level? Let’s go further, how many public teams? True public teams? Where are all these “hardened warriors” who are tested all season long?

  16. Cheer,
Big boy football only? Ok, I can play that game too. In AAA and AAAA, since 2007, the WPIAL (PIAA district 7) is 5-1 in State Title games. D1 & D12 combined are 2-6. The WPIAL is also 4-0 in head-to-head matchups with D1/D12 in the championship game.

The WPIAL has also won two out of the last three AAAA titles. In fact, the WPIAL has DOMINATED the state AAAA tourney since its 1988 inception, winning 12 out of a possible 25 AAAA state titles.

Cheer, you take ranking, I’ll take facts.

  17. @littleguyscoach,
I know they were on last years team. You said “not one single kid came over after Crosby got the job, unless their school closed”. I was pointing out the most obvious.

I’m pretty sure this is the first time you and I have talked on this subject. I have had this chat with others for 2 years now. This is how it generally goes. No kids ever transferred in! What about so & so from school X? Well, no kids transferred in this year! What about so & so from school Y? Well, no starter transferred in this year! What about so & so from school Z? Well, no left handed kids, with the same birthday as Elvis, transferred in during Christmas break! OK, you win.

This is not pointed directly at you, but you understand my point. If the info I am getting is true, this will not be relevant next year anyway. It will go from how many came in, to how many left?

  18. @the cry babies

What you need to do is expel the Catholics out of the PIAA. Don’t improve your level of play and keep your players home.

We all know that everyone wants to pay tuition to play on the best teams. I don’t know about you but if I am a parent I would much rather pay 20K to attend school in North Philly on 17th & Girard then the suburbs for free. Who wouldn’t?

Who doesn’t want practice on a field with no lights filled with crabgrass and rocks. Turf is so over rated!

I don’t know about you but if I am a player there is nothing like practicing and not knowing if your car has been broken into and your school books and toll change is gone! What a great feeling!

Who wouldn’t want to pay to go to a school that has to rent a home field. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t want to drive an hour every weekend to watch your home high school game and pray for away games because they tend to be closer.

You people crack me up. You have the best educators, the best buildings, the nicest sports facilities, the best, the best the best and you still can’t keep your players home. Oh, and I forgot to say its all for free!!!

Get better! Hire better coaches and not teachers who coach! Simple formula…winning attracts players! My hats off to the PCL and PPL hardened warriors representing the City of Philadelphia.

Ok, Warminster isn’t quite the city but we appreciate their efforts. I also don’t pretend to pretend to even come close to the commitment of so many of these players that are living the life of much of the inner City of Philly. My hats off to them as well as their commitment to this sport should be commended. Now get them some good coaching and watch how good a team like Central would be!

  19. Question?

At this time of the season with the cream rising to the top; why are so many playoff games so one-sided? This week: 42-7, 44-7, 35-0, 48-7, 48-7, 28-0, 42-14, 40-7, 48-7, 57-21; only a few were less than a 20-point spread. Why is this so? Is there really an explanation out there? I expect the 14-7, 21-19, etc, type scores this time of year.

  20. @ Jim B
We are talking big boy football only, D1 and D12 have very few A and AA teams so of course the numbers will be slanted. Success is not only measured by state titles, the power has clearly shifted if you look at the top 10 rankings in the state each year you will see more teams from Southeastern PA then anywhere else. Again, talking big boy teams only.
