  1. @ Josh Funk and/or Kmac:

Football guru’s that you are, question ( actually two):

Who has the most playoff wins in D1 in, let’s say, the last 10 years.

Also, who has the most wins overall ( all games played) in the same time period.

  2. @Josh
Thanks, Josh; I completely missed that. I missed the guide last year but usually buy it faithfully and have this years. Keep up the fine work on the love of a lot of folks apparently; High School football.

  3. Kmac,

PA Football News updates the list of 500-game winning programs in state history annually in their Resource Guide. That list is based on the compilations of Dr. Saylor and then updated accordingly. If you purchase PFN’s RG each year, you can have a very good idea where teams rank in terms of all-time victories. I’ve used that list on numerous occasions. Once the PIAA finals are over, I’ll provide folks an address for which to order their 2013 edition of the RG, if you desire to do so. If you are a high school football fan, it’s $25 (give or take) well-spent.

There are a lot of teams that North Penn couldn’t keep up with this year, c’ville is certainly one of them.
However, in the past 10 years, c’ville would want no part of North penn, that’s for sure.
If the green raiders you mean Ridley, their biggest hurrah against North Penn was several years ago when they upset them in the D1 final.Other then that, they haven’t wanted any part of North Penn either ( except this year)

This was the least talented NP team in 14 years. Also, the first time they missed the playoffs in that same time span.

Unfortunately for us NP fans, doesn’t look very promising for next year either. But I sure as hell hope I’m wrong!

  5. @tsaf77
No question on the tradition and certainly powerful small school programs at Dunmore and Old Forge. I wonder though about them being the only two single borough/townships left in the state? I know of three such teams in D1, but certainly not the power programs of the two you mentioned. I would think there were still many small town/borough schools left; admittedly the trend is to “area” schools and consolidations due to various cost/enrollment factors.

  6. @Josh
Now that the subject has come up; is there anyone working on bringing the Roger Saylor 500-win list current? Its, I assume, through the 2009 season. And, given so many seasons have passed (126 in some cases); maybe it should be a 600-win list(?). The top team is over 800 wins, and 126 seasons would allow roughly 5 wins a season now to get to 500. Some teams on it started in 1887, of course they did not play many games a season for many years. Just a thought.

  7. Jeff, its a silly issue and here’s why. As catholic school after catholic school fell by the wayside in the playoffs, and the public schools began to assert themselves, people being whiners needed a new bane to rail against. That new bane was identified as evil charter school Imhotep. A more ridiculous statement has never been uttered.

Imhotep’s a public charter school in the Philly Public League. Taxpayer dollars cover that school. Not scholarships, tuition or boosters. The only reason Imhotep exists is because public school in Philly stinks. So here’s their choice. Stay in a school run by crack dealers or go to the school of their choice and get an education. I know you would want them to stay in their crack-addled school just so your kids “who’ve been together since middle school” can vie for a state title.

And that’s why the argument is dumb. When kids arses get beat, parents have to find a way to rationalize the loss. Its a private school, its a catholic school, its a charter school, they recruit, blah blah blah blah blah. They could make a class 5A for private schools, a kids team will be beaten in one of they other classes, and sure as crap, you can bet some whiny parents will come up with a new “injustice”.

The grass is always greener and some people will always complain about something.

  8. Phillyboy,

Ridley has the highest winning percentage of any team in Pennsylvania (641-162-26, .798).

Mount Carmel has the most victories, with 813. Easton is No. 2 with 779 and Berwick is 3rd with 757.

  9. in addition to tsaf about dunmore they packed there bleachers and even filled 25%of bellwood antis side despite having a 125 mile ride, cold steady rain, and the game on tv they have an incredible following they like to say one team ,one town. congratulations to the bucks. look for large turnout again this week in hershey.

  10. @ Josh Funk

Speaking of all-time victories, is it true that Ridley has the most wins all-time in PA? Thought I heard that somewhere before. Is that true? If so, who is in second and third place? And what are the totals?

  11. Okay Josh, I was guessing at combining the 2 teams (a little tongue-in-cheek). Anyway, you get my main point (over 100 more than LaSalle and close to 100 more than North Penn). Thanks for the stats — I didn’t know C’ville had quite that many — hope they add one more this weekend

  12. I grew up in Western PA (D7) and have lived in D11 the last 10 years. Always a HS football fan. What’s impressive is the 1,000+ posts on this thread from eastern PA fans – the westernpafootball.com sister site is a ghost town in comparison. I’m from the rival district to NA so I’ll be rooting for Cville – Art Walker’s bunch will be their biggest test of the year… Clairton and Erie CP are stacked. Wyomissing should give Aliquippa a game and then some. Congrats to Cville and Wyomissing for their first appearances on the Hershey stage – always fun to see the excitement generated by the schools and their fans making that first trip.

  13. Cville,

Coatesville enters Saturday’s game with 644 all-time victories. But you are wrong about combining LaSalle & North Penn’s win totals to equal Coatesville’s.

With each NP & LSCHS’ 2012 seasons complete, North Penn has 566 all-time victories and LaSalle has 529. Put together, that’s 1,085 victories, or 1.7 times Coatesville’s all-time win total.

  14. For all the talking on here about Coatseville not having tradition and not seeing the state title. Wow, sour grapes. The kids won the game on the field and the Arm Chair QB’s on here are justifying the reasons they should have lost. It’s HS football guys. Lets please remember that.
When you Philly guys talk tradition how about a team outside Scranton in Dunmore.
Legendary HS football coach Henzes with almost 400 wins. He had players such as Tim Ruddy (C Miami Dolphins) come though this little school. Coaches such as the Marciano brothers (Texans and Colts) and one you all have probably heard of recently Victor Fangio (SF 49ers DC) have all played and coached for Mr. Henzes. Please keep in mind that Dunore is only one of two schools that are single borough/township schools left in the state (the other being Old Forge). The school is tiny but competitive every year and the teams are the most disciplined gentlemen I have seen in HS football. Coach Henzes emulated his father John Henzes who was an almost 300 wins for Blakely HS now Valley View. I admire Henzes and Dunmore.

  15. rollie, it is an issue for the kids who lost somewhere beween week 11 and week 16. DOnt be so shallow and dumb with your lack of regard for the neighborhood kids who had maybe one and if lucky two chasnces to get to the big dance.

  16. North Penn does not want any part of the Red Raiders- could not keep up- North Penn does not want any part of the Green Raiders either……..

  17. Hey D1 Monster, I got your point about Coatesville fans maybe backing off a bit, but historically speaking Coatesville has over 600 wins (I know that is way more than LaSalle or North Penn — maybe even if you combine the 2). Year after year Coatesville puts out good/scary teams. By the way, they were pretty darn good last year (yes, I know Pennsbury took them out). Plus we could get into the whole private school open enrollment thing (but I’ll just leave it at that). Also, for the rest of you, I’ve been watching some North Allegheny clips — they look a lot like LaSalle, plus they were really lucky to beat North Hills. I think Coatesville will be able to score against them, but not sure Coatesville can stop them. I predict C’ville 42-35 again.

  18. Public schools are guaranteed to win 3 of the 4 state titles. I bet 50% of the 1,000 responses to this thread are whiners about perceived unfair competition. PLEASE STOP. ITS A NON-ISSUE…AGAIN.

  19. Of the four eastern teams would say Wyomissing has the best chance of a W. Erie Cathedral Prep played a very legit schedule. Think NA is the best team in the state but Erie is not too far behind.

  20. Anyone who cannot see the imbalance of private schools playing public schools needs to step back. Take the emotion out of it, a kid on a public school team should not have to lose a once in a lifetime shot to play deep into the state hunt to a team who picks kids from the surrounding areas. It’s that simple.BTW, it does not matter what sport it is.

  21. D1Monster-

We actually agree. I am not a ‘Ville fan, but respect what they have done THIS year and was upset with the lack of respect shown to D1. The tenor on both sides needs to calm down. I won’t contibute to that anymore. Peace out!!

  22. PubSchoolFan,
I am not a LaSalle fan, actually North Penn is my team. I agree with you that Coatseville should enjoy the moment. It is a great accomplishment for the kids and will be a great experience. But enjoying the moment and being proud of your team is one thing. Acting like Coatesville is the greatest program in the world is laughable. More than likely you will not sniff Hershey again in the next 10 years. So I guess, yeah, you should enjoy the moment, since you wont be here for another decade at best. You and some other posters are making it extremely difficult for anyone in D1 to want to cheer for them. Who cares how Lasalle fans acted befroe the game. Be a better person and win with character.
