  1. I hate to say it because i like watching good high school games but i havent seen a team that can contend with La Salle,(besdies prep) i know that Pennsbury has size but La Salle doesnt have a down hill running game so that isn’ta problem for them. I think the Scranton game will be close at halftime and then La Salle will pull away. However LS and North Allegheny in the state final… Going to be one hell of a game

  2. the private/public debate. On the one hand, if a parent can afford to send their kid to a private one, go for it. On the other, we see many public schools that mirror colleges in that they they want athletes first and students second. Problem is when a kid gets hurt, cant cut the academics or does not make it to the pros, they’re washed up and left to fend for themselves and fade off into the abyss. Education before athletics.

  3. I have been reading the argument over the Philly Catholic Schools recruting for sports since the summer,i have 3 questions
1 Have any of these schools ever been investigated for wrong doing by their district or the P.I.A.A.
2 have any of these schools ever had an illegal player.
3 have any of these schools ever had a complaint filed by an opposing team or coach.
If not their with in the rules

  4. Just want to throw in about the private vs public school thing. My kids all went, or are going to, public school in Central Bucks. I personally don’t believe in paying to send my kids to private school. But that’s my own personal opinion. Others feel differently, and I have plenty of friends who’s kids go private. That is their decision. Some did it as a legacy, some because their kids flourish better in a smaller school environment, and some did it because of the sports programs. But the point is, they made the decision to do it. Now, a couple of them were approached by the school from an athletic perspective, and that does happen. But no one is twisting any arms here. The families still ultimately make the decision. And at the end of the day, who cares? If the kid can get a better education, or a better sports shot, and the parent’s want to pay the money, who cares? Let them and don’t worry about it. A kid gets out of any school what they put in. Yes, a higher percentage of kids may go to better colleges from private schools, but that is also a factor of numbers. 6 kids out of 300 is a bigger percentage than 6 kids out of 1600. Ultimately, at the end of the day, 95% of any of these kids aren’t going to play D1A college ball, and they are not making the pros. Any family should be able to take advantage of any program that they want if they want to pay for it. People should keep the endgame in mind. It’s not about high school football which is great to watch and cheer on, but it’s about these kids being successful for the rest of their lives. BTW, my kid went to a Central Bucks high school and is playing D1 football. My current football player is a senior in Central Bucks but is choosing not to play football in college. Kids are fickle.

  5. @Jeff you may be right but i have been on Scranton bandwagon all year no time to get off now.I think it will be a great game can’t wait till Friday night
@Ron i agree about Abington struggling on offence, but their defense of frout has been very strong, as you said if curry has the time.I don’t know what type of kicker Berwick has but this kid from Abington can hit from 45 with out a problem he is that good, may be a big factor

  6. Some good points about this already made, but I have sent two boys to La Salle (one an artist, one an athlete) and the school was a great fit for both. There is a sign at the entrance at the school that says “enter to learn” and a sign at the exit that says “leave to serve.” It’s not lipe service, it’s what the place is all about. Believe me Philly Boy, this middle class guy wouldn’t pay 17K a year for “status” or an athletic program, and if you spent 15 minutes around the kids and faculty at the school, you would understand that.

  7. Phillyboy – you are totally out of line and your opinion obviously comes from someone who has no idea what they are talking about. Who are you to be critical of how a family prioritizes their hard earned dollars? Many families make great sacrifices to send their kids to these schools, putting off things that you probably enjoy every year like vacations, new cars, home improvements, etc so that they can send their kids to these schools. The results are there – LaSalle will send a much higher percentage of students to the very best schools, the Ivies, Georgetown, Notre Dame, MIT, and that is the purpose of making these sacrifices. That is just the reality of it. Of course, as soon as these schools have any type of athletic success the “recruiting” comes out. I can assure you form first hand knowledge that it is not true, and that the huge majority of the best players have made the choice to attend these schools on their own and to make the sacrifices necessary to go there. Success breeds more success and the LaSalle football program is just a reflection the incredible success of the entire athletic program right now. Hard to imagine any school in PA in a very long time who has had so much success to that many sports at one time. That success draws kids to want to play there, not recruiting.

  8. @mark d, better get ready to buy a berwick hoodie. i already have one. After last weeks d2 aaa games, Abington Heights offense is having a real hard time scoring, no offensive tds in last 2 games. Berwick has an outstanding defense, who really beat up the dallas qb in the second half. its really going to be hard for AH to move the ball against berwick. if CJ Curry gets blocking from his offensive line, he will pick AH apart Berwick 20 Abington Heights 7

  9. Phillyboy, many of these families grew up in an all boy setting and that apparels to many. Central Bucks is a very good district. Many find the course work more rigorous at a GA, Prep or LS and the opportunity to attend a better college may be enhanced by attending one of these schools. Not to say there are not brilliant kids in the public schools, there are. You have to see the camaraderie amongst the kids at LS and Prep to appreciate the full scope of what those schools mean to the kids. They are Christian based teachings about helping others and God knows we need that in this country now more than ever. The kids appreciate the discipline and the zero tolerance policy on drugs is something that our local school districts can’t offer. It’s unfortunate but true. Btw, my kids are in CB School district and attend the public schools. Not sure about HS choices yet. CBSD is an awesome district, in case you want to say I’m ripping the public schools.

  10. Phillyboy. Yes you are entitled to your opinion but you fail to recognize that LaSalle primary goal is education and parents who send their sons to LSCHS strictly for athletics are quickly disillusioned when they either fail to make the team or cannot meet the academic requirements at LSCHS.

In addition, why are you so concerned about how other people spend their money? As the parent of a recent LSCHS grad (and myself a Philadelphia Public School alumni), the reason he went there was not to play sports nor perceived because of a perceived graduate status.

Always interesting how public and parochial parents/graduates feel entitled to criticize the private schools but you rarely here private school parents/graduates comment on public/parochial schools. You should feel grateful that parents like myself pay both public school tuition (thru school taxes) as well as private school tuition.

  11. @ Jimbo

Dude, I’m entitled to my opinion. To send a kid miles away every day and spend literally thousands of dollars over 4 years is crazy. You say the parents are coommited to education. Fantastic! What, Central Bucks is not good enough? Give me a break. To the best of my knowledge CB is considered very good, not just good. So, in the final analysis why would somebody do that? Two reasons: (1) want to play on some strong sports program (rather than supporting the “hometown” area), and (2) status. That’s why I favor the public teams over the privates. Here’s hoping that N. Allegheny or some other team pounds LaSalle yet again.

  12. I find it funny and even sad that people take shots at SJ Prep, LaSalle, Wood, ACC, McDevitt, Cathedral Prep, PCC and just about any successful catholic school out there. Well, for every one of those there’s Holy Redeemer, PJP2, Berks Catholic, Cardinal O’Hara that plug away happily doing their thing…some successful, some not.

The real issue is small minded people are jealous of success and just can’t keep their #%*!* mouths shut. People used to accuse Berwick of recruiting. I believe I also heard people complain about Strath Haven, CB West, Central Columbia, Clairton etc etc.

Its the human condition. People want given to them what others earn through hard work. Sit down and shut up already!

  13. d 2 finals AAAA
Scranton 28 Del Valley 21 (been on Scranton all year)
    AAA
Abington 17 Berwick 14 (if i am wrong Ron i will buy a Berwick hoodie )
    AA
lakeland 28 W.A.21 (would be easy to talk me out of this one )
    A
Dunmore 35 Old Forge 21 (all my Dunmore friends tell me this woun’t be close )

  14. Barry knows that La Salle has kids from out of state on their roster….

Except La Salle doesn’t have any kids from out of state on their roster.

  15. @phillyboy; LS has about 900 students, almost every single one comes from a “good” school district. Their families obviously believe in education and making the sacrifice for their sons to get the best education available; it’s not dopey and it’s not a slap at other schools. It’s about family choices and it’s not for you to label it dopey.

  16. @harryaston, you really know little about sjp and even less about LaSalle! Yep, sjp has students from south jersey; know what? The school is about6 to 8 miles from jersey. Know what else, 98% of their jersey students don’t play football!

LaSalle had a kicker from California? Now, that is one helluva commute. Post about things you know something about.

  17. @jeff, look, both Scranton and Del Val play mostly a AAA schedule out of a weak district. Do we need to explain it further?

  18. Paul on Mike Bennett LaSalle’s kicker from 2007-2009 you might add that he did not even play football until HS. He played soccer and got cut his Sophomore year. He then went over to the FB team and asked if he could tryout.

No one was recruiting him out of HS.
