How do privilege and background translate into competitive advantages on the playing field. I thought football was about blocking and tackling. You have a problem with the PIAA about a level playing field so take it to them. La Salle and the other recruiting giants play by the rules set forth by the PIAA. “Privilege and background”? Stay on topic-football!

  2. @Jim B

Jim, are you sure. Dallas has to play Crestwood. If they beat them and Crestwood loses to Coughlin, then Dallas, Crestwood, and Coughlin all finish 7-3. That factored in Dallas would get all of those team wins from the other two. I think they have a chance. Of course they still have to win all of their games. Should be an exciting 2nd half.

  3. @Jim B
As the man says not so fast my friend! All the AAA L.F.C teams still have to play each other pluse a game with either Scranton or Del Valley one or 2 of thouse teams could end up 6-4 or 5-5 if Dallas could win out they still might have a chance to sneek in

  4. @ philly
ok i hear you dont know what it like in your area but believe me a lot of people around here have to be reminded and believe me i no where near a bleeding heart

  5. My comments re LaSalle are based on direct interactions with parents and grads. I have had literally NONE with SJP folks and not in a position to comment.

…and it IS about football because the priviledge and backgrounds these kids come from put them in advantaged positions that the majority of Public League, Public and PCL schools don’t have. These favorabilities translate into competitive advantages on the playing field.

I picked the Prep game because that is likely the only game where there is a level playing field. And if my experiences sitting on the Prep side of the field lead me to develop a similar perspective to the one I’ve developed re LaSalle, I’ll speak that as well.

@Paul from Philly Really? You want to compare the Public facilities and equipment to LaSalle based on the fact that LaSalle rents a stadium? As they say, ‘Child, please’. Take that argument to MOST of the Public schools and try not to get laughed at in these times of rising taxes and budget cuts, program cutbacks, teacher layoffs.

  6. @ philly Pub
You made some really well thought out points regarding privieged and underprivilege. Tuition at LaSalle is $18,700 per year. In Philly you can send a child to most Catholic high schools for around $23,000 for all four years. I thought it to be very funny that you picked the Prep game for them boys at LaSalle to be humbled. Prep tuition is $19,275 per year. Perhaps a better example would have been in 2008 when Washington ($0 tuition) beat LaSalle in the D12 championship. Your analogy was so off base in using Prep. The kid at Preps dad isn’t a surgeon, he owns the hospital.

  7. No way Dallas gets in. None. Only four teams make the d2 AAA playoffs. Berwick and Crestwood are both 4-1, and locks from the WVC (look at their remaining schedules), plus Coughlin should finish 7-3. Add in the LFC teams, like Abinton, West Scranton, Prep, Valley View, and Dallas has no chance.

  8. @mark

Dallas should sneak in. The only tough games I see are Crestwood and maybe LL. Regardless, they should win both by at least 2 TDS

  9. @ phillyboy:

Agreed. He missed his calling, should have been a minister ( maybe he is).

    @ Philly Public:
    Agreed.
It’s simply a matter of yuppies vs blue collar.
I jus happen to be blue collar

  10. @Philly Public Loyal
You might want to check who you’re rooting for in the SJP LS game. Did you know that most of City Council and the Mayor of Philadelphia are from SJP? Just sayin’.

  11. @Philly Public Loyal

The playing field is not level. Take it to the PIAA. But if you want to talk money, who has all the nice stadiums and equipment? The pubs. With tax payers money. La Salle has to rent PWs stadium. When did it come up on this thread about “His father is a doctor”?
Kid’s fathers are not doctors in the Public league?
I know of one kid who’s going to Harvard. Coleman is going there for Lacrosse. Still don’t know if that was mentioned on this thread, but so what. No other kid has been mentioned on here making good and moving on to the college level? When was it mentioned on here that “his brother goes to Yale”? I think your personal experiences are creeping in where they don’t need to be. Stick with the topic-football.

  12. Does Dallas have a chance to get into District playoffs if they win out? Going by the point system and looking at WVC schedule it looks like they do. Any thoughts?

  13. @ mark d

How many times are you going to say “And remember these are kids we are talking about”? Will you quit it with your bleeding heart baloney. Yes, we know they are kids. We respect their efforts. I consider it the highest level of ball that still maintains some integrity and wholesomeness. Now, can we talk some ball or would you rather get together and hold hands and commiserate?

  14. Have to jump in on this one.

Arrogance: “An offensive display of superiority or self-importance; overbearing pride.” Key words: “Offensive”, “Self-importance”, “overbearing”. If it were JUST boasting that would be tolerable. But, nearly every conversation with anybody associated with LaSalle is arrogant. “That kid is going to Harvard.” “This Kid’s brother went to Yale.” “His Father is a Surgeon”. Blah, blah, blah. Haven’t even brought up the recruiting element. You take it back to winning. But what is the source and the foundation of the winning? Is it the unlimited resources? The Money? The pool of kids? The playing field isn’t level. Yes, Wood is doing the same thing, but there is a little more humility to their recent success. We’ll see if that continues, but I’ll be at the SJP-LaSalle game cheering for a LaSalle humbling

  15. @CBSouth
Arrogance is a tough word. Arrogance, boasting whatever you want to call it comes from winning. And that’s what La Salle has done the last few years. And La Salle is a better team then they were last year, just with Brett Gordan calling the plays again. Now you add Kane and Herron to the skill positions, well that a nice step up too. And by the way, I don’t think Steinmetz’ defense doesn’t get pounded by anyone. Now that’s not boasting or arrogant. That’s fact. All in all it should be a hellava game!!

  16. Guys how many d1 kids you can put on a field is not what High School football is all about ,it about heart. My game of the week is Susquehanna & Holy Cross,Holy cross had to forfeit to Dunmore last week becuse it could only dress 14 kids and is 0-5 Susquehanna is 1-4 losing by an avg of 20 point a game.Yet these kid play thier hearts out every week and show up to practice every day just for that chance to play, even thought they know they be on the losing end usally by a lopsided score. Now thay have a game where each knows it has a chance to win !!! that what the game is all about heart let give a hand to all the Holy Cross and Susquehanna kids evey where. And remember these are kids were talking about.

  17. I agree that SJP will throttle Wood. Have seen both play and think that Wood is still living off a little of last years results. Based on what SJP did to NP, don’t think its going to be close

As for ” feeling my oats”… Not really. I don’t think that one game in the west should diminish another in the east. And of the 2 match ups here in the east, I think that CBS-NP is a better overall game than SJP-AW with larger 4a implications. My initial post just pointed out that it is the eastern PA version. Next weeks LaSalle-SJP game is a better matchup than either of this weeks games Eastern games. And my HOPE (not prediction) is SJP pounds LaSalle. Too much LaSalle arrogance in his area.

Let’s all enjoy ALL the games!?!?

  18. Josh, CBSouth guy is just feeling his oats; the best game in the east this weekend is A Wood – Prep. NP has already been proven to be a fraud.

  19. @ CB South:
Easy there big guy. Josh was just expressing his opinion about big games. In this case, he happens to be right.

    @ paul:

You really think so? I see SJP dismanteling Wood.

  20. @Paul
Do you really think Wood vs Prep is going to be a good game? I am going to watch form first to final whistle for sure. Just to see Wood lose by 40.

  21. CB South,

I did read your entire post, and I stand by my statement and opinion that I posted. We simply don’t agree – but that doesn’t mean I have to get over myself. Sometimes, I just love stoking a debate and throwing a few more coals on the fire.

    Mark D,

I’m planning to attend the Abington Heights/Scranton Prep game Week 7 in Clarks Summit. I’ve had that game circled as one I wanted to attend and cover since June.

  22. @Josh
You dodn’t need d1 kids in the game for a great high school football game. all you need is two teams hungery to win who dont like each other.Want to see a great game come to the Valley View Abington Heights game, two year ago the frist play the tackel was so hard it broke the running back shoulder pads!!!!!

  23. Easy there Josh… Just pointing out that in the east, for this week, this is the best matchup. If you would have read the entire post, I did call out the the SJP-LaSalle game the following week. I’m a CBSouth guy, but hopefully if you are reading my comments, you realize I’m not claiming to be the center of the PA HS football universe. You can now get over yourself.
