Written by: on Thursday, January 5th, 2012. Follow David Mika on Twitter.

Who will be this year’s surprise and who will dominate football this year. It’s never too early to talk High School Football.

Who are your top players in 2012? Who do you think will be the top teams going into the 2012 season?

  1. @Buddy…

Liberty and Nazareth both lost a ton of talent (especially skill position players).

Nazareth lost State Co-Player of the Year in Qb Daniel Harding and three of their top WR’s in both Bridgforth’s and Dan Shepard. They lost one of their most solid OL-DL players too in David Wilke…Nazareth does return leading rusher sophomore this year Jordan Gray and a nice WR in Tonnies…

Liberty lost all 5 of their ballcarriers from last year…QB, both WB’s, both FB’s…(they ran a flexbone)…they lost a lot of their OL and DL and it seems to be a rebuilding project…they do return possible 1st-3rd team all-state and D-1 prospect WR in KJ Williams…but I don’t know much else.

I think Nazareth should/could compete for the subregionals and Liberty is a wait and see…from a pure guesstimate I’d lean toward at most 7 wins and at least 4…

  2. @Photo Not Available…

It will be a very interesting season this year. I expect Parkland to be in the top 3-4 teams in the LVC this year (like every year)…and so it’ll be a nice opener for both. What does DV have that makes you think they will be really good? I know they scrimmage Liberty on 8/24 and I will check them out then.

Secondly, Easton is the preseason league favorite…who lost to Nazareth in the D-11-2-4 finals by 7 points. They return a ton and should be very tough to contend with.

  3. @photonotavailable please tell me what Easton, Parkland, and Whitehall have coming back? If all of D11 should watch out for Del Val what are the strengths and weakness of D11 teams that Del Val will struggle with or the weakness that Del Val will exploit. Who returns from Del Val other than your son or the position you coach? Wait will Del Val line up on offense and run power or iso out of the I? Will another D2 claim to have passing attack this year with a QB that we never see? I think you need to go to a MENSA meeting

  4. Yeah D11 should be worried about Del Val because D2 has competed so well with D11 in the sub-regional in the past.

  5. to Bobby, Parkland has to get by Delaware Valley in the first game of the season first, any D11 team will have the hands full this year agaisnt them

  6. Whoever survives out of D11 in the playoffs will just about always meet someone from the PCL ( usually will be LaSalle or Prep). I would really like to see one of the PPL teams beat them ( PCL), maybe some day.

D1 is anyones guess. Everyone always figures NP winning it, but that’s not automatic.

What about Liberty & Nazareth in D11 this year?
    won’t they contend?

  7. @Buddy,

In 2008, Liberty had to beat George Washington (after they won their subregional)…GW beat LaSalle…so they did go through them before they beat North Penn. GW defeated LaSalle for the D-12 championship (the first year the PCL got into the playoffs)….

Anyways, Easton/Parkland should be pretty good in D-11 AAAA…what else is new. I’d expect D-12 rep to end up playing one of those two teams. It’s kind of funny if Easton and LaSalle meet again in the playoffs…this in my opinion could be the first year Easton slays that beast. Although not as an excuse to play P-burg on Turkey Day and then play another game 2 days after is a chore.

  8. One thing that I’d like to see. Players who also excel in the classroom and community. Athletic talent should be only 1/2 the equation, because when it’s all over thats all they have.

  9. @ staff:

Now I’ve heard from different sources on this website that North Penn’s first 3 games are:

    LaSalle 8/31 7 pm
    @ A.Wood 9/8 7 pm
    St. Joe’s Prep 9/14 7 pm

All that true, NP’s schedule is now complete.

  10. watch out for williams valley in D11 to make some noise this year, there returning 8 starters on offense and 9 on defense, should make for a pretty decent team

  11. @ Buddy … Agreed; Tough schedule to say the least.LaSalle,Wood,SJ Prep and NP all will have new QB’s this year… McGarrity,Monaghan, Morningweg and Ernst all were studs… will be fun to see how everything plays out.

Pennridge returns many starters and will be tough.

  12. @ soup:

You’re kidding! So NP’s first 3 games are:
LaSalle, Wood & Prep ( in that order).
Talk about chasing the best! I don’t see them going thru that unscathed, that’s for sure.

    @ phillyboy:

NP loses alot from last year. Biggest question mark is at QB. So yea, maybe Pennridge beats them this year………… never know.

  13. Speaking of North Penn, does anyone know how they’re expected to do this year. Will this be more of a peak year? They always seem to reload. Maybe this is the year that North Penn takes it on the chin from Pennridge.

  14. @Buddy – North Penn is playing SJ Prep not LC 9/14/12. The NP VS LC neighborhood series is on hold for a while and may not continue unless LC can get their program together. D. Beck always plays the best teams out there…

  15. @ staff again:

I am 95% positive that North Penn’s 3rd game ( would be Sept 14), is Lansdale Catholic at NP’s field. I’ll try to get this verified.

That would then complete NP’s schedule.

  16. correction from below:

North Penn at Wood is SATURDAY, SEPT. 8TH at 7 pm. Not sure, but I don’t believe Wood has a field, so game is at William tennant High.

    Mike had mentioned that below.

  17. @ staff:

    Schedule update;

North Penn is playing at Archbishop Wood on Sept. 7, 7 pm start I believe.

  18. One player to watch is Dalton Nunemacher from Tamaqua. He’s a WR who recorded a 4.48 40 yard dash time last month.

  19. I will have to say keep an eye on Joshua Gibbs on the offensive and defensive line for West Catholic.
