Recap: Delaware Valley vs Hazleton Area

On Friday night, Delaware Valley and Hazleton Area faced off in the District 2 Class 6A Football Championship. Delaware Valley won 35-20 with an interception by Delaware Valley’s Ryder Machado that secured the win.

Delaware Valley’s Joe Sciacia started off the scoring with a two-yard run in the first quarter.  Kicker Everett Bell converted the extra point.

In the second quarter, Hazelton was more dominant scoring 13 points. Hazelton’s Connor Shamany caught a two-yard pass from Tyler Wolfe for a touchdown. The extra point attempt by Luke Russo was blocked by Delaware Valley.

Delaware Valley’s Paulie Weinrich scored a one-yard running touchdown and Bell converted the extra point leaving Hazelton down eight points behind the Warriors. Hazelton’s Matthew Buchman scored a 29-yard run and Russo converted the extra point to leave the Cougars behind by one point.

In the third quarter, Sciacia scored a two-yard run and Bell converted the extra point. About six minutes later, Weinrich scored on a four-yard run.  Bell converted the extra point. Sciacia and Weinrich both got their second touchdowns of the night, making the score 28-13 going into the fourth quarter.

Sharmany kicked off the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 51-yard pass for a touchdown from Wolfe. Russo converted the extra point. Machado got Delaware Valley their final touchdown with a 94-yard interception return with the extra point converted by Bell.

The Cougars had the more dominant performance with 138 rushing yards and 227 passing yards compared to the Warriors 126 rushing yards and 151 passing yards. Delaware Valley’s three interceptions by Harlem Cook, Machado and Landon Machado secured the win.

Delaware Valley moves on to play State College on Nov. 19 at Hazleton Area High School.
