Experienced Core Looks to Turn Growing Pains Into Progress
The Mahanoy Area Golden Bears enter the 2026 season still young in several areas, but considerably more experienced after many of their players were thrown into significant varsity roles last fall.
Head coach Mick Connolly returns nearly his entire starting lineup from a team that finished 2-8 in 2025. The Golden Bears list just one key starter lost, Kyler Quick, giving Connolly and his staff a large group of players who understand what it takes to compete at the varsity level.
The goal now is turning that experience into improvement.
For Mahanoy Area, the formula will center around playing physical, mistake-free football, developing week by week and relying on an experienced front to help a young secondary defensively.
Looking Back at 2025
Mahanoy Area endured a difficult start to last season, dropping its first five games against Catasauqua, Williams Valley, Minersville Area, Schuylkill Haven and Marian Catholic.
The Golden Bears finally broke through September 26 with a dramatic 22-20 road victory over Pine Grove Area.
After three more losses, Mahanoy Area finished the season by producing its best offensive performance of the year.
The Golden Bears traveled to Shenandoah Valley and came away with a thrilling 44-43 victory.
That performance provided an encouraging finish to an otherwise challenging season. Mahanoy Area scored nearly half of its season’s offensive points over its two victories and showed that its young roster was beginning to develop.
Now, most of that group returns.
Experience Could Make the Difference
Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of Mahanoy Area’s outlook is simply how many familiar names are back.
The Golden Bears list 10 returning offensive starters, including Ben Lazaga, Braylon Komosinsky, Joel Corena, Will Syoyer, JD Kowalchick, Quintin Rucker, Tayten Matrician, Gavin Price, Garrett Hauslyak and John Redgate.
For a team that struggled with youth last season, that continuity should be valuable.
Players who were learning on Friday nights in 2025 now enter the season knowing what to expect.
The challenge is using that experience to become more consistent.
Connolly’s message is straightforward: play smart, play physical and eliminate mistakes.
Kowalchick and Matrician Give Golden Bears Options
Mahanoy Area returns multiple players capable of handling the football, including JD Kowalchick and Tayten Matrician.
Kowalchick returns at quarterback and defensive back, while Matrician provides versatility as a quarterback, running back and linebacker.
Having multiple players who can contribute in different roles gives the coaching staff flexibility when constructing the offense.
Quintin Rucker returns at running back and defensive back, while Will Syoyer provides another physical option from the fullback position.
The Golden Bears aren’t looking to build their identity around complicated football.
They want to play hard-nosed football, protect possession and force opponents to earn everything.
Returning Offensive Line Could Be a Strength
One of the biggest reasons Mahanoy Area could take a step forward is the amount of experience returning along the offensive line.
Ben Lazaga, Braylon Komosinsky, Joel Corena, Gavin Price and Garrett Hauslyak all return with experience in the trenches.
That’s an important starting point for an offense trying to become more physical and consistent.
Instead of rebuilding the line with an entirely new group, the Golden Bears can work on developing chemistry among players who already have varsity experience.
John Redgate also returns at tight end and linebacker, providing another experienced player who can contribute to the blocking game.
For an offense that wants to play hard-nosed football, the development of that veteran front will be critical.
Limiting Mistakes Is the Offensive Priority
Mahanoy Area isn’t hiding from the fact that its roster remains young despite all the returning experience.
The difference is that many of those young players are no longer inexperienced.
The Golden Bears’ offensive goals revolve around playing smart, physical and mistake-free football.
Turnovers, penalties and missed assignments can be especially damaging for a team trying to establish consistency.
Mahanoy Area wants to eliminate those self-inflicted problems and improve every week.
That approach could be particularly important early in the season as players settle into their roles.
Defensive Front Must Set the Tone
The Golden Bears’ defensive success could largely be determined up front.
Mahanoy Area expects to have a young secondary, meaning the front five will need to generate pressure and prevent opposing quarterbacks from becoming comfortable.
Fortunately, several of the team’s most experienced players are linemen.
Lazaga, Corena, Price and Hauslyak all contribute on the defensive line, while Komosinsky returns at defensive end.
Syoyer also provides another option along the defensive front.
That experience should allow Mahanoy Area to be more aggressive at the line of scrimmage.
The goal will be to disrupt plays before they develop and take some of the pressure off the younger players in the secondary.
Redgate and Matrician Important at Linebacker
John Redgate and Tayten Matrician give Mahanoy Area returning experience at linebacker.
Their ability to communicate and get the defense aligned will be important, particularly with younger players behind them.
The Golden Bears need their front seven to become the strength of the defense.
If the defensive line can generate pressure and the linebackers consistently get to the football, Mahanoy Area can protect its secondary while those players gain experience.
The formula is simple: win up front and make opponents uncomfortable.
Special Teams Looking to Use Team Speed
Speed will be one of Mahanoy Area’s primary weapons on special teams.
The Golden Bears want to use their athleticism in the return and coverage games while keeping mistakes to a minimum.
That final part will be critical.
Special teams penalties, poor coverage and turnovers can quickly change field position. For a team emphasizing mistake-free football in every phase, avoiding those problems will be a priority.
If Mahanoy Area can use its speed while remaining disciplined, special teams could provide the offense with valuable field position throughout the season.
Players to Watch
JD Kowalchick, QB/DB — A returning two-way starter who will be important to the Golden Bears’ offensive development while also providing experience in the secondary.
Quintin Rucker, RB/DB — Gives Mahanoy Area an experienced option in the backfield and another returning player in a young secondary.
Tayten Matrician, QB/RB/LB — His versatility gives the coaching staff plenty of options. Matrician can handle the football offensively and will also be important at linebacker.
John Redgate, TE/LB — A two-way contributor who can help the physical running game offensively and provide experience in the middle of the defense.
Ben Lazaga, OL/DL — Part of an experienced group in the trenches that could become one of Mahanoy Area’s biggest strengths.
Braylon Komosinsky, OL/DE — Another important two-way lineman who will be counted on to help the Golden Bears generate pressure defensively.
Joel Corena, OL/DL — His experience on both lines will be valuable as Mahanoy Area attempts to establish a more physical identity.
Will Syoyer, FB/DL — A physical two-way player who fits the hard-nosed style the Golden Bears want to establish.
2026 Schedule
Mahanoy Area gets its first test August 22 with a home scrimmage against Greater Nanticoke before opening the regular season August 28 at Panther Valley.
The Golden Bears then travel to Catasauqua before hosting Pine Grove Area, a team they defeated 22-20 last season.
League play begins September 18 against Schuylkill Haven.
A difficult stretch follows with Williams Valley, Nativity BVM, Tri-Valley, Minersville Area and Marian Catholic.
The regular season concludes October 30 when Mahanoy Area hosts Shenandoah Valley in a rematch of last year’s wild 44-43 Golden Bears victory.
My thoughts on Mahanoy Area:
Mahanoy Area’s record may have been 2-8 last season, but 2026 isn’t a complete rebuild.
It’s the next stage in the development of a young team that gained significant varsity experience.
With only one key starter listed as lost, the Golden Bears bring back a large group of players who have already been tested on Friday nights. Most importantly, they return substantial experience in the trenches, which gives them a foundation for the physical style Connolly wants to establish.
Offensively, the Golden Bears want to play hard-nosed football, protect the ball and steadily improve.
Defensively, the responsibility will fall heavily on the front five to generate pressure while a young secondary develops.
There were encouraging signs late last season, particularly the 44-point performance in the victory over Shenandoah Valley.
Now comes the challenge of producing those performances more consistently.
If Mahanoy Area can limit mistakes, control the line of scrimmage and turn last year’s experience into better execution, the Golden Bears have an opportunity to take a noticeable step forward in 2026.
