In a game filled with explosive plays, dramatic momentum swings and nearly 1,000 yards of combined offense from the teams’ leading performers, Nazareth Area saved its biggest moment for the final seconds.

Owen Hall connected on a 27-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Blue Eagles to a thrilling 52-49 victory over Bethlehem Catholic in a back-and-forth contest that featured seven lead changes and a 35-35 tie heading into the fourth quarter.

Nazareth quarterback Cooper Madson threw for 363 yards and a touchdown, while running back Will Bacolo rushed for 136 yards and three scores. Matt Leluga made an impact on both sides of the football, returning an interception for a touchdown and catching four passes for 161 yards, including an 89-yard score.

Bethlehem Catholic countered with an outstanding performance from Carter Vassa, who rushed for 84 yards and two touchdowns while catching nine passes for 244 yards and another score. Golden Hawks quarterback Axel Burkart threw for 357 yards and two touchdowns.

The excitement started almost immediately.

The Golden Hawks needed just one play to answer.

Bethlehem Catholic’s defense then came up with a turnover of its own when Jonathon Ayache recovered a Nazareth fumble at the Golden Hawks’ 24-yard line.

The Golden Hawks took advantage of their next scoring opportunity, with Vassa hauling in a 56-yard reception from Burkart to help move the offense downfield. Vassa finished the drive with a two-yard touchdown run with 3:05 remaining, giving Bethlehem Catholic a 14-7 advantage after Schultz’s extra point.

Nazareth answered early in the second quarter.

Bacolo helped keep the drive alive with a 15-yard reception on third-and-long before scoring on a four-yard touchdown run with 10:25 remaining. Hall’s extra point tied the game at 14-14.

But Bethlehem Catholic responded in explosive fashion.

On the first play of the ensuing possession, Vassa broke free for a 62-yard touchdown run. Schultz’s extra point put the Golden Hawks back in front 21-14 with 10:06 remaining.

The Golden Hawks extended their lead later in the quarter after Ayache intercepted a Nazareth pass to set up another scoring opportunity.

Burkart connected with Vassa for a 49-yard gain, moving Bethlehem Catholic to the one-yard line. Burkart finished the drive with a one-yard touchdown run, and Schultz’s extra point increased the lead to 28-14 with 4:44 remaining before halftime.

Nazareth refused to let the game get away.

The Golden Hawks had an opportunity to add to their advantage before halftime, but Nazareth forced an incompletion on first-and-goal from the three-yard line on the final play of the half.

Bethlehem Catholic carried a 28-21 lead into the locker room, but the second half would provide even more excitement.

The Golden Hawks struck first in the third quarter when Burkart connected with Armando Thom for an eight-yard touchdown pass with 4:44 remaining. The drive featured another spectacular play from Vassa, who turned a reception into a 61-yard gain.

Schultz’s extra point extended Bethlehem Catholic’s lead to 35-21.

Nazareth responded almost immediately with one of the biggest plays of the night.

Madson connected with Leluga for an 89-yard touchdown pass with 3:53 remaining. Hall added the extra point to pull the Blue Eagles within 35-28.

The momentum continued to swing toward Nazareth when Luke DePietro made a spectacular one-handed interception at the Blue Eagles’ 13-yard line with 3:05 remaining.

Nazareth capitalized on the turnover.

Madson connected with DePietro for a 41-yard gain, moving the Blue Eagles to the Bethlehem Catholic four-yard line. Bacolo finished the drive with his second four-yard touchdown run of the game.

Hall converted the extra point with 1:44 remaining, tying the contest at 35-35 heading into the fourth quarter.

The final 12 minutes turned into an unforgettable offensive showdown.

Bethlehem Catholic regained the lead when Martinez scored on a nine-yard touchdown run with 9:35 remaining. Earlier in the drive, Martinez caught a four-yard pass on fourth-and-4 to keep the possession alive.

Schultz’s extra point made it 42-35.

Nazareth answered with some trickery.

DePietro connected with Zuercher on a 13-yard touchdown pass with six minutes remaining. Hall’s extra point tied the game at 42-42.

The Blue Eagles then received another opportunity when Jayden Hutchison recovered a Bethlehem Catholic fumble on the ensuing kickoff.

Nazareth wasted little time taking advantage.

Bacolo broke through the Golden Hawks’ defense on a 14-yard touchdown run, somehow managing to stay on his feet before reaching the end zone.

Hall converted the extra point with 5:05 remaining, giving Nazareth its first lead since the opening quarter, 49-42.

But Bethlehem Catholic had one more answer.

Facing fourth-and-6, Burkart connected with Vassa for a 16-yard touchdown pass with 2:07 remaining. Schultz added the extra point, tying the game at 49-49.

With time winding down, Nazareth moved into Bethlehem Catholic territory and eventually lined up for a 46-yard field goal attempt.

Hall’s kick was unsuccessful, giving the Golden Hawks an opportunity to take possession and potentially win the game.

But the Blue Eagles’ defense delivered one final game-changing play.

On Bethlehem Catholic’s first play following the missed field goal, Jackson Medlar forced a fumble, and Connor Nowroski recovered it for Nazareth.

The turnover gave the Blue Eagles another opportunity to win the game.

This time, Hall would not miss.

With the game tied 49-49 and the clock winding down, Hall connected on a 27-yard field goal as time expired, sending the Nazareth sideline into celebration and securing an incredible 52-49 victory.

Bacolo provided the ground attack, rushing for 136 yards and three touchdowns, including two scores in the second half.

DePietro was a major factor on both sides of the football. He caught 14 passes for 147 yards, threw a 13-yard touchdown pass and made a spectacular one-handed interception that helped spark Nazareth’s third-quarter comeback.

Leluga also delivered a memorable all-around performance. In addition to his 32-yard interception return for a touchdown, he caught four passes for 161 yards, highlighted by his 89-yard touchdown reception.

For Bethlehem Catholic, Vassa turned in one of the most impressive individual performances of the contest.

He finished with 328 combined rushing and receiving yards, rushing for 84 yards and two touchdowns while hauling in nine passes for 244 yards and another score.

Burkart threw for 357 yards and two touchdowns, while Martinez rushed for 94 yards and two scores, including his 76-yard touchdown run on the Golden Hawks’ first offensive play.

Both teams repeatedly answered each other’s scoring drives, producing a contest in which neither defense could consistently slow down the opposing offense.

Bethlehem Catholic built leads of 14 points in both the second and third quarters, but Nazareth continued to battle back.

The Blue Eagles scored 14 unanswered points in the third quarter to tie the game before the teams combined for 31 points in the final period.

In the end, it was Nazareth’s ability to capitalize on turnovers and Hall’s clutch kicking that proved to be the difference.

From Leluga’s interception return to DePietro’s one-handed pick and Medlar’s forced fumble in the closing moments, the Blue Eagles made critical defensive plays when they needed them most.

And when the opportunity came for one final kick, Hall delivered.

After nearly four quarters of nonstop excitement, Hall’s 27-yard field goal as time expired gave Nazareth a remarkable 52-49 victory over Bethlehem Catholic in one of the most dramatic finishes of the season.
