DISTRICT 11 NOTES (week 8):

RUNNINGBACKS:

Luke Miller of North Schuylkill rushed for 383 yards and 4 td’s in their win over Blue Mountain to break his own single game yardage record. Miller also broke Jaden Leiby’s single season rushing record. Leiby rushed for 1,689 yards in 2018 as a junior. Miller has 1,723 yards entering week 9 and also went over 3,000 yards rushing for his career (3,016). Colton Reber of Schuylkill Haven (3,044 yards), and Marquez Wimberly of Nazareth (3,031 yards) also went over 3,000 yards for their careers. Wimberly has scored 58 career td’s and Reber just hit the 50 td mark. Wimberly went over 1,000 yards on the season (1,162). Reber leads the District with 26 td’s and Sean Steckert of Southern Lehigh is 2nd with 22 td’s. Steckert also broke the school career rushing record that Jeremy Mack set from 1995-98. Mack rushed for 3,813 yards and scored 62 td’s, while Steckert currently has rushed for 3,836 yards and scored 67 td’s. For those of you that remember, in 1996 Mack’s teammate Chris Smith rushed for 2,289 yards and scored 29 td’s, and Mack the following year in 97 rushed for 2,220 yards and scored 35 td’s. Steckert sits alone in 20th place all-time with his 67 career td’s. Wimberly cracks the top 50 with his 58 td’s scored and is currently tied with Darren Mason of Liberty (1997-99), and Robbie Frey of Lehighton in 45th place. Christian Stiehler of Pocono Mountain West rushed for 274 yards and scored 5 td’s in their win over ES South. Kalab Monaco holds the school record for rushing yards in a game when he rushed for 397 yards vs Dieruff in 2018. Franklyn Quiteh holds the single game td record when he scored 6 vs PM East in 2008. Keyen Johnson went over 1,000 yards rushing on the season in week 8 (1,065 yards). We had 3 players go over 2,000 yards rushing for their careers. They are, TJ Lawrence of Parkland (2,096), Brady Shomper of Williams Valley (2,032), and Caiden Faust of Pen Argyl (2,006). Lashawn Johnson of Freedom (1,132 yards), Chris Ward of Pleasant Valley (1,047 yards), and Chris Martinez of Easton (1,009 yards), all have over 1,000 yards rushing for their careers and are now on the chart.

QUARTERBACKS:

Michael Stofanak of Freedom had his first career 200 yard passing game last week when he threw for 267 yards and 3 td’s in their win over Northampton. The junior went over 1,000 yards on the season (1,128) and has thrown 12 td’s. Finn Coen of Parkland also had his first career 200 yard game when he threw for 202 yards and 2 td’s in their win over Central Catholic. Greyson Fuller of ES South was the 3rd QB to have his first career 200 yard passing game in week 8 when he threw for 206 yards and 4 td’s in their loss to PME. Matt Bodnar of Notre Dame had his 5th 200 plus game this season when he threw for 283 yards and 2 td’s in their win over Palisades. For his career Bodnar has thrown for 6,284 yards and thrown 66 td passes. His yardage slots him into 15th place all-time in the District, moving up 4 spots from last week. He moved ahead of Anthony Casciano of Pius X who threw for 6,128 yards from 2006-09, Ryan Fry of Nazareth who threw for 6,120 yards from 1995-98, Dan Kendra III of Bethlehem Catholic who threw for 6,087 yards from 1991-94, and Matt Machalik of Palmerton who threw for 6,055 yards from 2020-23. Bodnar’s 66 td passes puts him in a tie for 15th place all-time in the District with Bryce Herb of Williams Valley (66 from 2018-20), and Machalik (66 from 2020-23). Dante Carr threw 4 td’s in their win over Nativity to give him 72 career td passes. That ties him with Jared Jenkins of Freedom for 10th place all-time. Jenkins threw his 72 td passes from 2016-19. Shane Leh of Northwestern has 64 career td passes and is tied with last weeks mentioned players Corey Cinicola (JT), Devante Cross (Park), and Cayden Stem (Wil) for 18th place all-time. Antonio Fontanez of Liberty (59), Colton Sams of Southern Lehigh (59), and Brady Shomper of Williams Valley (58) are all just outside the top 25 all-time in the District for career td passes. Fontanez still leads the District in td passes this season with 27 but gave up the lead for yardage to Bodnar (1,832 yards to 1,764 yards). Fontanez’s 27 td’s is a single season school record breaking the old record of 26 that Doug Erney set in 2015. Other QB’s to throw for 200 yards in week 8 were Jack Trickel of Palisades (273 yards, 3 td’s in a loss to ND), Axel Burkart of Bethlehem Catholic (247 yards, 3 td’s in a loss to Nazareth), Sams threw for 232 yards and 4 td’s in their win over Bangor, and Garrett Smoyer of Northern Lehigh threw for 217 yards and a td in their win over Catasauqua. Max Heim of Schuylkill Haven threw 4 td passes in their win over Pine Grove. Cole Ordway of Easton joined the “4,000 yard” club with his 4,010 career passing yards. other QB’s besides Stofanak to go over 1,000 yards passing this season are, Smoyer of NL (1,200), Mason Soos of Pen Argyl (1,117), Gavin Taff of Northampton (1,081), Jayse Lawrence of Lehighton (1,036), Cohen Kirby of Blue Mountain (1,028), and Brody Breiner of Panther Valley (1,002). Hitting the 2,000 yard career mark last week were Patrick Cahill of Central Catholic (2,088 yards), Soos of PA (2,055 yards), and Aiden Reilly of Catasauqua (2,016 yards).

RECEIVERS:

Carter Vassa of Bethlehem Catholic caught 12 passes for 259 yards and 3 td’s vs Nazareth. The 12 catches breaks the school record of 11 that Eric Wert had vs Emmaus in 2021. His yardage breaks the school record that Shawn Martell held when he caught 6 passes for 221 yards vs Altoona in 2001. Vassa’s 3 td catches was the 6th time its happened at BECA including himself as freshman in 2023. Others that I found were Steff Kern (1985), Nate Stewart (2015), Shamus Williams (2017), and Matt Stianche (2018). Vassa joined the “2,000 yard” club and currently has caught 129 passes for 2,165 yards and 23 td’s. His catches have him in a tie with Adam Thomas of Wilson for 28th place all-time in the District. His yardage is the 22nd highest total in the District all-time. Vassa takes over the top spot in the District this season with his 786 yards. Talon Dogmantis of Whitehall also joined the “2,000 yard” club. Dogmantis has caught 122 passes for 2,077 yards and 23 td’s. He is the 35th player to reach the 2,000 yard mark in the District. Paiten Lapoint of Minersvile caught 5 passes for 134 yards and 3 td’s vs Nativity. Lapoint has 10 td receptions this season which ties him with Gabe Davis (2019), and Jason Cullen (2021) for the school single season record. Lincoln Cook of Palisades leads the District with 54 receptions which also ties the school record. Ron Gelegonya caught 54 passes in 1990. Other Pirates to catch 50 catches in a season were Andy Kukura (51 in 1975), and Kyle McGrath (51 in 2021). Niko Castillo of Schuylkill Haven caught 3 passes for 63 yards and 3 td’s vs Pine Grove. Jake Puksyzn of Liberty caught his 12th td pass last week vs Easton to tie the school record for a single season. Jarrod West caught 12 td passes in 2009. Joe Donaher caught 11 td passes in 1967 and KJ Williams caught 11 in 2012. Puksyzn also tied the school record for career receptions. Williams caught 125 passes from 2010-13 to set the record. Teammate Zyaire Davis went over 1,000 yards receiving for his career (1,010). Mason Bollinger of Northwestern also tied the school career reception record. Cam Richardson caught 97 passes from 2012-14 to set the record. Also for Northwestern, teammates Brady Zimmerman and Shane Hulmes of Northwestern both went over 500 yards receiving for their careers and are now on the chart. Matthew Leluga of Nazareth also joins the chart this week. Brady Behr of Pocono Mountain West is back and grabbed his 13th career td catch to tie the school record. Behr is tied with Chris Monaco (2014-16), and Khalili Edwards (2016-17).
