DISTRICT 11 NOTES (final edition week 16):
RUNNINGBACKS:
Sean Steckert of Southern Lehigh rushed for 300 yards and 4 td’s in their State Championship win over Twin Valley. In Steckert’s last 4 games he averaged 40.5 carries, 257 yards and almost 4 td’s a game. He ends his senior season rushing for a school record 3,211 yards on 386 carries. Steckert scored 45 td’s this year, tying the school record that Asher Smith set back in 2019. His 386 carries this year is the 3rd highest total all-time in the District. Record holder, Colin McDermott of Central Catholic had 459 carries in 2012, and Zach Barkett of Schuylkill Haven had 406 carries in 2008. For his career, Steckert had 723 carries, 5,484 rushing yards, and scored 90 td’s. His carries have him just outside the top 20 all-time in 21st place. Billy Stocker of Wilson holds down the 20th position with 728 carries from 1995-98. Steckert’s yardage slots him in 9th place all-time just ahead of Matt Machalik of Palmerton (5,457 yards from 2020-23), and Eric Rath of Pius X (5,450 yards from 1998-01). And finally, his 90 td’s is the 6th highest total all-time in the District, 2 behind Cody Remaly of Northern Lehigh who scored 92 td’s from 2007-10. Fletcher Thompson of Williams Valley finished his sophomore season rushing for 1,839 yards and scoring a total of 28 td’s. He also caught 20 passes for 500 yards with 6 of his 28 td’s coming via the pass. His rushing yardage total is the 3rd highest total all-time in the District for a sophomore behind only Kobe Brish of Schuylkill Haven (2,775 in 2017), and Austin Scott of Parkland (1,918 in 2000). In 2 years, he’s amassed 3,301 yards rushing and scored 48 td’s. Both totals are the 2nd highest all-time in the District entering your junior year. Brish owns both records with his 3,692 yards and 56 td’s. Woody Petchel of Pen Argyl is the only other player to join the “40 td” club after completing their sophomore season. Petchel scored 10 td’s as a freshman in 1968 and then scored 30 td’s as a sophomore in 1969. Machalik is the 3rd player to score 30 or more td’s as a sophomore with his 31 td’s he scored in 2021. Brish also owns that record with his 44 td’s he scored in 2017. Braxton Lakatosh of Northwestern ended his senior season rushing for 1,404 yards and scoring 19 td’s. Sophomore teammate Chase Sukanick joins the chart with his 1,005 career rushing yards. Chase Kessler of Northampton ended his sophomore season rushing for 1,501 yards, which set a new single season school rushing record. Caden Henritzy held the old record when he rushed for 1,458 yards in 2023. Chris Martinez of Easton rushed for 1,393 yards and scored 8 td’s in his senior season.
QUARTERBACKS:
Shane Leh of Northwestern finished his senior season throwing for a school record 2,660 yards and 31 td passes. Deven Bollinger held the old record when he threw for 2,105 yards in 2019. Bollinger still holds the single season td pass record with his 35 td’s he threw in the 19′ season. Leh ended his career throwing for 6,070 yards and 79 td passes. His yardage has him just outside the top 20 all-time in the District (21st place). Dan Kendra III is in 20th place all-time 17 yards ahead of Leh. Kendra threw for 6,087 yards from 1991-94. Leh’s 79 td passes ties him with 3 other qb’s for 7th place all-time in the District and they’re all from this season. Matt Bodnar of Notre Dame, Dante Carr of Minersville, and Colton Sams of Southern Lehigh all threw 79 td passes in their career and Sams is only a junior. Sams finished his junior season throwing for 2,689 yards and 36 td passes. His 36 td passes breaks his own school record of 34 that he threw last year, and his yardage is the 2nd highest at SL behind the 2,999 yards he threw last year. Blake Levengood is the only other Spartan qb to throw for 2,000 yards in a season (2,417 yards in 2015). Sam’s will enter his senior season with the 17th highest passing yardage total in District 11 (6,301 yards). Cole Ordway of Easton finished his career with all 4 major career school passing records. Brady Shomper of Williams Valley threw for 2,080 yards and 30 td passes in his senior season. He ends his career setting 2 school records with his 5,057 career passing yards and 74 career td passes. His td passes tie him with AJ Long of Pius X (2010-11), and Zack Bradley of Catasauqua (2011-13) for 12th place all-time in the District. Shomper also rushed for 2,322 yards and scored 40 td’s. He’s the 3rd qb this year and the 7th all-time in the District to score 40 or more td’s and throw 40 or more td’s in their career. Ordway and Carr also reached that milestone this year. Ordway scored 44 td’s and threw 41 td passes and Carr scored 57 td’s and threw 79 td passes. The other 4 qb’s were Brendan Nosovitch of Central Catholic (2008-11) who scored 59 td’s and threw 106 td passes, Matt Machalik of Palmerton (2020-23) scored 95 td’s and threw 66 td passes, Devante Cross of Parkland (2013-15) scored 40 td’s and threw 64 td passes, and Tre Jordan of Pius X & Notre Dame (2012-15) scored 41 td’s and threw 83 td passes. TIDBITS:
I was able to bring together all my records of the 300-yard rushers in District 11 over the years, and I found that it’s been done 115 times. Here’s some info on them with more to come as time permits.
1st recorded 300 yard rushers (1st 6):
Gil Strunk of Pen Argyl vs Bangor in 1934 (302 yards on 53 carries and 5 td’s scored) won 33-13
Maurice Schleicher of Slatington (NL) vs Lehighton in 1954 (300 yards on only 9 carries and 5 td’s scored) won 56-13
John Rosella of North Schuylkill vs Bloomsburg in 1968 (306 yards on 23 carries and 4 td’s scored) won 38-12
Tim Posivak of Liberty vs Allen in 1976 (309 yards on 32 carries and 4 td’s scored) won 41-14
Bob Agosti of Marian Catholic vs Pottsville in 1986 (306 yards on 27 carries and 2 td’s scored) won 37-14
Jim Hope of Tamaqua vs Shenandoah Valley in 1989 (331 yards on 30 carries and 3 td’s scored) won 28-21
There were no 300 yard rushers in 1990. So, that means (109 of the 115) 300 yard rushers have been since the 1991 season.
