District 11 Notes (Week 5)

RUNNINGBACKS: 

District leader Alex Achenbach of Williams Valley (728 yards) is nearing 3,000 yards for his career.  The junior currently has 2,945 yards and 35 career td’s.  Trey Tremba of Parkland rushed for 222 yards on 38 carries and 2 td’s in their overtime loss to Whitehall.   Steven Lilly of Palisades rushed for 211 yards and 2 td’s in their win over Schuylkill Haven.  Lilly went over 1,000 yards for his career (1,059).  Salvatore Capria of Jim Thorpe and Anthonie Hunsicker of Catasauqua also went over 1,000 yards rushing in their careers.  Cade Christopher of Northwestern joined the “40 td” club and now has 41 career td’s.  Matt Machalik of Palmerton tied the school record for td’s scored in a career.  Mike Stasko scored 46 td’s from 2013-16.  Jalen Fletcher of Freedom scored 4 td’s in their win over Central Catholic.  Fletcher has scored 10 td’s this season and leads the EPC South in rushing with 599 yards.

QUARTERBACKS:

Ben Dempster of Shenandoah Valley went 12 for 12 for 253 yards and a school tying 6 td passes in their win over Hancock Maryland.  Dempster tied the record of Brian Racis who threw 6 td passes against CMVT in 1995.  Danny Darno of Notre Dame threw for 228 yards and 5 td’s in their win over Palmerton.  Darno also had a rushing td.  Sammy Sasso of Nazareth had his third 200 yard game of the season when he threw for 264 yards and 3 td’s in their win over Liberty.  Sasso went over 1,000 yards for the season and now has 1,161 yards and 12 td passes.  Both totals only trail Palmerton’s Machalik  totals in the District.  Machalik still leads with 1,224 yards passing and 15 td passes.  Sasso also went over 3,000 yards passing for his career (3,038).  Jordy Guzman of Dieruff threw for 235 yards in their loss vs Stroudsburg.

RECEIVERS:

Nick Ryan of Shenandoah Valley caught 4 td passes in the game vs Hancock.  Ryan caught a total of 5 passes for 168 yards.  His 4 td’s catches ties the school record that Ron Wasilowski set in 1998 vs Bishop O’Reilly.  Ryan went over 1,000 yards for his career and the junior now has 1,059 career yards on 60 catches.  Ryan along with Conner Dillon of Tamaqua and Nolan Lobb of Nazareth lead the District with 7 td receptions each.  Owen Johnson of Freedom and Brock Polinsky of Minersville both reached the 70 career reception mark and have almost identical career totals.  Johnson has 70 catches for 1,261 yards and 12 td grabs while Polinsky caught 71 passes for 1,224 yards and 12 td grabs.  Josh Ludlow of Notre Dame caught 7 passes for 101 yards and 3 td’s vs Palmerton.  Luke Hutsko of Minersville is the 3rd receiver to catch 3 or more td passes last week as all 3 of his catches went for scores.  Damian Tyminski of Pen Argyl leads the District in receptions (36) and reception yardage (528).  Ian Rarick of Lehighton and Noah Dolbin of Nativity are also over 500 yards receiving this season and are tied for second with 507 yards.

STAT OF THE WEEK:

Back to Shenandoah Valley’s td receptions.  Lets go over their all-time single season leaders.  Wasilowski would finish the 1998 season catching 13 td passes to break the school record.  Ed Kubilis held the record when he caught 12 td passes in 1992.  In 2001 Mike Zulkowski tied the record when he caught 13 td passes.  Since 2001, Nick Merva has come closest to the record when he caught 11 td passes in 2012.
