Bennie leads Stroudsburg

The senerio was very simple for the Stroudsburg Mountaineers on Friday nite. Beat Pleasant Valley at Brodheadsville and win the Mountain Valley Conference outright for the first time sine 1994. But a win y PV at home could create as least a three way tie and maybe even a four way tie for the championship.

Mountie Quarterback Robert Bennie, poised to sign a letter of intent to play baseball at the University of Virginia next week rushed for 221 yards on 20 carries and three touchdowns and threw for one more as Stroudsburg took care of their own business in a 35-7 rout over the Bears.

All of Bennie’s touchdowns were on quarterback sneaks from the one yard line. He also hooked up on a 46 yard scoring strike to split end Ronnie Savoia in the second quarter that gave Bennie the single season total offense record at Stroudsburg that was held by Artie Owens since 1971.

Andrew Brome (17 carries 74 yards) also scored on a two yard run for the Mounties (5-1 conference, 8-2 overall),

More impressive that the Mountie offense who rolled up 350 yards total offense was the defense.

Even though they surrendered a 29 yard run by Rob Getz on the first play from scrimmage,  Stroudsburg’s defense manhandled PV all game long

With the win, Stroudsburg now returns to the post season since the 1995 season when they lost in the District final to East Stroudsburg when James Mungro was a junior. Preliminary indications have the mounties making the trek down Route 33 and across Route 22 to Orefield to take on the resurging parkland Trojans at orefield Middle School next Friday nite.
