ACC Manhandles Downingtown East 30-21

With Easton defeating Pennsbury and Liberty beating Glen Mills on Friday night, Central Catholic was trying to complete the trifecta of District 11 beating District One on opening weekend.
To make matters worse for Downingtown East, Junior Running Back Drew Harris, a 1,000 yard rusher last season was suspended for this game because of an incident in last years playoff game against Ridley.
The Vikings held up their end of the three game sweep as they defeated Downingtown East 30-21 Saturday night at Kottmeyer Stadium in Downingtown in a game that was not as close as the score indicated.
“They whipped us up front,” said Downingtown East Coach Mike Matta. “The first half we couldn’t do anything. The second half we stayed with them. Give them credit though, they’re a good squad,” he added.
How dominating was Central (1-0)? 23 first downs to 8, 472 yards total offense to 184, yet 1 play into the fourth quarter Downingtown East (0-1) cut the Central lead to 24-21 when Brandon Robles (14 carries 96 yards) scored on his second touchdown of the night from seven yards out and Tyler Mayes added his third extra point of the game. The score was set up when Kenny Ambrogi intercepted a Brendon Nosovitch pass and returned it 21 yards to the Central nine yard line.
From there, the Vikings went on a 12 play 76 yard drive that ate up 6:02 of the clock as Nosovitch scored on his third touchdown of the night, a 25 yard run that for all intense purposes iced the game for Central. Nosovitch, who passed for over 2,000 yards and rushed for 1,000 yards as a sophomore last season rushed for 165 yards on 26 carries with his other two scores coming from 12 and one yard out..
“In the fourth quarter, he really took charge of that game,” said Viking Head Coach Harold Fairclough said of his quarterback.
The Vikings took a 24-7 lead with 3:00 to go in the third quarter when Nosovitch hit Shane McNeely for a one yard touchdown play that capped a 96 yard 12 play drive and seemed to put Central in the drivers seat.
On the ensuing kickoff, Dillan Martin took the ball on the 15, broke a couple of tackles and 85 yards later cut the Central lead to 24-14. Nosovitch was also 14-24 passing for 192 yards and the one touchdown.
“When we started doubles, we had our special teams meeting and said we didn’t want that happening this year,” said Fairclough. “That happened a lot to us last year.”
With the win, Central now starts the cross-over portion of their Lehigh Valley Conference schedule as they travel to Freedom on Saturday nite, while Downingtown East is on the road also in another non-league game against Norristown.
