Soggy fields for week two

The second week of the 2011 high school football season may well be overshadowed by the massive floods in central and eastern Pennsylvania this week. Many schools have changed both time and locations of this weekend’s game.

In addition to weather problems some games may be cancelled as a result of a teachers strike involving the Philadelphia Catholic League.

As expected the first week of the season was difficult to predict. This writer’s record was a dismal 2-3 as Allentown Central Catholic and Springfield (Delco) won as predicted while Malvern Prep lost a close one to Ridley, Souderton fell to Neshaminy and North Penn stumbled in the second half to lose to LaSalle.

The last five years, this future teller has a 216-82 prognostication record while going 2-3 for this season.

This week offers some early tests for top rated squads. LaSalle entertains national powerhouse Bergen Catholic. The Explores appeared to be in mid-season form behind QB Matt Magarity, during the second half of their come from behind victory over North Penn last Saturday night. This will be Bergen Catholic’s opening game of the season and they just won’t be ready for high flying Explorers.

The next contest of interest is a Central League game as Haverford travels to Ridley. Won’t make the mistake of picking against the Green Raiders again this week. Ridley gritted out a 21-20 win over a talented Malvern Prep while Haverford suffered a tough 20-19 loss to Council Rock North. The Ford defense will be hard pressed to slow running back Jalen Randolph. Green Raiders are up to the challenge.
