Becahi’s ground game too much for Stroudsburg

STROUDSBURG – Bethlehem Catholic’s running attack was too much as they out gained Stroudsburg last night 370 to 89. Antwon Keenan and Julian Spigner combined for 270 yards rushing to lead the Golden Hawks (7-1) to a convincing 49-14 win over Stroudsburg (6-2) at Ross-Stulgatis Stadium.

“That was the best game we played,” said Bethlehem Catholic head football coach Joe Henrich. “Offensively we kept grinding and wore them down. It was a statement win for our program tonight.”

With the win, Bethlehem Catholic is on top in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference North Division.

“Tonight we are one step closer to our goal,” said Henrich. “We still have to take care of business.”

The Golden Hawks have William Allen and Allentown Central Catholic left on their schedule.

The story of the game was the play on both sides of the ball by Bethlehem Catholic. Becahi outgunned Stroudsburg 490 to 194.

“We played physical on defense tonight and ran the ball well,” said Henrich. “That’s what this team is about. That’s Bethlehem Catholic football. We’ve got to keep this thing rolling right into the playoffs.”

Becahi came out strong on their opening drive. Keenan’s one-yard touchdown run on fourth down capped a 10-play drive. In the second quarter Keenan added another one-yard run and an amazing run down the sidelines on a 57-yard scamper to put the Golden Hawks up 21-0 in the second quarter.

The only mistake Becahi’s defense made in the first half was a 62 yard touchdown run by Stroudsburg’s Jamaal Brome with 9:55 left in the first half. Brome finished the night with 92 yards rushing.

Their would be no more scoring in the first half and Becahi led 21-7.

Just like the first half, Becahi’s defense came out strong. Isaiah Onushchak’s sack on Stroudsburg’s quarterback Jake Jakobsen forced the Mounties to punt to start the second half. The Golden Hawks sacked Jakobsen four times.

The Golden Hawks took the ball and marched right down the field to extend their lead. Spigner scored on a 11-yard run with 4:33 left in the third quarter.

Down three touchdowns, Stroudsburg tried a trick play on the reverse pass that came up short. Golden Hawks Nicholas Petros intercepted the pass and went 28 yard for the score to put them up 35-7 with 10:53 remaining in the game.

With 8:26 left in the game, the Golden Hawks needed one play to add to their lead. Randy Terry III’s 45-yard run did that.

Spigner added his second touchdown run of the night, another 11-yard dash for the score. The Mounties got the last score of the night. Jacobsen hit Marcello Riccardi for the score. Jacobsen finished the night completing 7 of 19 passes for 105 yards.
