Veteran Line, Physical Defense Fuel Optimism for Bensalem in 2026

Bensalem enters the 2026 season with a veteran roster, a physical identity and the belief that it can take the next step in the rugged Suburban One League Continental Conference.

Head coach Mitch Cohen’s Owls finished 5-5 a year ago, earning impressive wins over Upper Darby, Abington, Cheltenham, Council Rock North and Harry S. Truman. Four of Bensalem’s five losses came by two touchdowns or less, including heartbreakers against Pennridge (36-33) and Council Rock South (14-12), showing just how close the Owls were to an even stronger campaign.

Although Bensalem must replace several key seniors, including quarterback Hollis Sanders, running back Aiden Mayfield, wide receiver Thomas Bailey and linebacker Evan Varallo, the Owls return a strong nucleus on both sides of the football.

With a veteran offensive line, an athletic group of receivers and a defense built around an experienced front seven, Bensalem believes it has the pieces to compete with anyone on its schedule.

Veteran Offensive Line Will Set the Tone

Everything offensively starts up front for the Owls.

Bensalem returns four experienced linemen led by senior Joey Ott, a 6-foot-2, 280-pound tackle who is one of the team’s top two-way players. Joining him are senior Dominic Lafontano (6-1, 225), senior Liam Nillson (5-11, 255) and junior Wesley Cook (6-0, 230).

Collectively, the group averages approximately 6-foot-3 and 265 pounds while bringing outstanding athleticism to the line of scrimmage.

The coaching staff expects that unit to consistently win the point of attack, creating running lanes while protecting a new quarterback making his first season as the starter.

Bensalem’s offensive philosophy revolves around controlling the football, sustaining drives and wearing down opposing defenses with a physical running game before attacking through the air.

New Quarterback Has Plenty of Weapons

Replacing Sanders is the biggest offensive question entering the season, but the Owls have surrounded their new signal-caller with an experienced supporting cast.

Junior Brennan Farnsworth returns as the featured running back after gaining valuable varsity experience. His combination of vision, toughness and explosiveness should make him the focal point of the ground attack.

The receiving corps is another strength.

Senior Taylor Callahan gives Bensalem a reliable outside target, while senior Shane Varallo and Johnavon Cooper provide speed and big-play ability.

The Owls plan to utilize multiple offensive formations, including both spread and condensed sets, while incorporating motion to create favorable matchups and keep defenses guessing.

If the offensive line establishes the run early, those playmakers should find opportunities to make explosive plays in the passing game.

Ball Security Will Be Critical

The coaching staff has identified several offensive priorities entering the season.

Protecting the football, controlling possession and finishing drives in the red zone will determine how successful the Owls become.

With a veteran offensive line and athletic skill players, Bensalem believes it can consistently move the football. Turning those drives into touchdowns instead of empty possessions will be one of the biggest keys throughout the season.

Experienced Front Seven Headlines the Defense

Defensively, Bensalem expects its front seven to become the team’s biggest strength.

Ott returns at defensive end and anchors a deep defensive line that the coaching staff believes can consistently pressure opposing quarterbacks.

Generating penetration up front is a major emphasis. The Owls want to disrupt opposing offenses before plays develop, forcing hurried throws and creating turnover opportunities.

The veteran linebacker corps provides another reason for optimism.

Senior Chase Fritz, senior Bobby Clift, senior Sean Hennessy and Farnsworth return with valuable experience and athleticism.

The group has the versatility to defend the run, cover receivers in space and contribute as pass rushers, allowing defensive coordinator Tony Dragani to employ multiple fronts and pressure packages.

Young Secondary Has Playmaking Ability

While younger than the front seven, the secondary features plenty of talent.

Senior cornerback Amir Gray returns to lead the defensive backs, while junior safety Jimmy Cross continues his development after gaining valuable varsity experience.

The coaching staff believes the secondary has the athletic ability to defend the pass while remaining physical in run support.

Bensalem plans to disguise coverages and vary its pressure packages to keep opposing quarterbacks uncomfortable throughout games.

One of the biggest defensive goals is improving on third down and eliminating explosive plays.

Special Teams Provide Stability

Sophomore Dylan Barnhart returns as Bensalem’s placekicker after a promising freshman campaign.

The coaching staff is confident in Barnhart’s ability to provide consistent kickoffs and reliable field-goal range.

Bensalem also believes its overall roster depth will strengthen kickoff and punt coverage units, while the punting game should consistently flip field position.

Winning the hidden-yardage battle could become an important advantage in the tightly contested games common throughout the Continental Conference.

Players to Watch

Joey Ott, Sr., OL/DE: Dominant two-way lineman expected to anchor both the offensive line and defensive front.

Brennan Farnsworth, Jr., RB/LB: Physical two-way standout who will lead the rushing attack while contributing at linebacker.

Taylor Callahan, Sr., WR: Veteran receiver capable of stretching defenses and making plays after the catch.

Shane Varallo, Sr., WR: Experienced playmaker expected to be one of the offense’s primary targets.

Johnavon Cooper, WR: Explosive athlete with the ability to create separation and generate big plays.

Chase Fritz, Sr., LB: Veteran linebacker who will lead the defense in the middle of the field.

Bobby Clift, Sr., LB: Experienced defender expected to play a major role against the run.

Sean Hennessy, Sr., OLB: Athletic outside linebacker who adds versatility to the defensive front seven.

Jimmy Cross, Jr., S: Returning safety who provides experience and leadership in the secondary.

Amir Gray, Sr., CB: Veteran cornerback expected to anchor a talented defensive backfield.

Dylan Barnhart, So., K: Returning kicker who gives the Owls stability on special teams.

My thoughts on Bensalem

Bensalem enters 2026 with the experience and physical style necessary to compete in one of District 1’s toughest conferences.

The Owls return a powerful offensive line, an athletic group of receivers, a talented running back and a defense built around experienced linebackers and a disruptive defensive front. While replacing a veteran quarterback and several key graduates will be a challenge, the supporting cast gives the coaching staff confidence that the transition can be smooth.

The biggest keys will be developing the new quarterback, winning the turnover battle, converting scoring opportunities and continuing to dominate the line of scrimmage.

If Bensalem controls the football offensively, pressures opposing quarterbacks defensively and limits mistakes in close games, the Owls have the talent and depth to improve on last season’s 5-5 record and contend for a District 1 Class 6A playoff berth.

2026 Offensive Outlook: Offensive outlook: Losing a bunch of key offensive starters to graduation, we will play to our strengths which will be our offensive line and run game. Our talented offensive line will average 6-3, 265 LBS with exceptional athleticism should win the point of attack. With a new QB under center and incredibly skilled RBs, our run game will complement our pass game. A very skilled WR group that can create separation will be a threat in the open field. We will operate with multiple formations including condensed and spread packages with various motions.

Keys to success: Ball control coupled with sustaining drives. Limit the turnovers. Get the ball to our skilled players so they can use their big play ability. Red zone success.

2026 Defensive Outlook: Defensive outlook: A very talented and deep defensive line group will lead our defense. Generating penetration and the ability to get to the QB will create turnovers. The veteran LB group can play in space and should be very effective against the run. A young but very talented secondary has the ability and skillset to defend the pass and support the run. As a unit, we will be very flexible and able to play multiple fronts, coverages with disguises, with variable pressure packages.

Keys to success: Able to get off the field on critical 3rd down situations. Ability to get penetration and pressure which will force and create turnovers. Limit the big play.

2026 Special Teams Outlook: Special Teams outlook: Overall team depth will be an advantage running down kicks and kick coverage. Our placekicker has moderate distance and accuracy and also the ability to drive the ball downfield on kickoffs. Our punting group should be able to flip the field and be able to get our punt coverage in great position.
