North Penn Reloads Around Veteran Backfield After District Title Run

North Penn enters the 2026 season with momentum, experience and championship expectations.

The Knights finished 12-3 last fall, captured the District 1 Class 6A championship and advanced to the PIAA semifinals before falling to La Salle College High School.

Their postseason run was one of the strongest in District 1.

North Penn defeated Boyertown, Souderton, Neshaminy and Pennridge to claim the district title. The Knights avenged regular-season losses to both Neshaminy and Pennridge, including a 21-14 championship victory over the Rams.

That ability to improve throughout the season defined North Penn’s 2025 campaign.

After losing two of three games in September, the Knights won nine straight and established themselves as one of the top Class 6A teams in Pennsylvania.

Head coach Dick Beck now faces the challenge of replacing several important contributors while building around a proven group of returning playmakers.

The offense will feature one of the area’s best running backs in senior Rylei Gray, while junior Ziyon Smith gives the Knights another explosive option in the backfield.

Senior receivers Will Rittenhouse and Sal Colella return, and senior Charles Ashley provides experience along the offensive line.

Defensively, North Penn brings back talent along the front and in the secondary.

The Knights may have new faces in several positions, but the program’s expectations remain unchanged.

North Penn intends to compete for another Suburban One League National Conference title and make another deep run in the District 1 playoffs.

Gray Returns as Offensive Centerpiece

Senior Rylei Gray enters the season as North Penn’s most accomplished returning player.

The three-year starter rushed for 1,196 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, establishing himself as one of District 1’s most productive running backs.

Gray combines experience, vision and physicality.

He has proven capable of handling a heavy workload and producing against elite competition.

That experience will become especially important as North Penn develops new starters throughout the offense.

The Knights plan to lean heavily on their rushing attack, and Gray will serve as its foundation.

He can consistently move the chains, finish runs through contact and create explosive plays once he reaches the second level.

Gray’s leadership also extends beyond offense.

He returns in the secondary, making him one of the team’s most valuable two-way contributors.

North Penn will need to manage his workload carefully, but his versatility gives the Knights a proven playmaker in every phase.

Smith Adds Speed to Backfield

Junior Ziyon Smith will join Gray in a talented backfield.

At 5-foot-8 and 165 pounds, Smith brings a different style to the offense.

His quickness and acceleration give North Penn another player capable of creating explosive plays.

The combination of Gray and Smith should make the running game difficult to defend.

Gray provides experience and power, while Smith offers speed and change-of-direction ability.

Using both backs will allow North Penn to keep players fresh and vary its offensive approach.

Smith’s development will be important because opponents are likely to focus heavily on stopping Gray.

If Smith becomes a consistent threat, defenses will not be able to commit all of their attention to one player.

The Knights may also use the two backs together in certain formations, creating additional challenges for opposing defenses.

New Quarterback Will Have Strong Support

North Penn must identify a new quarterback, but the eventual starter will inherit an offense with experienced skill players and a proven rushing attack.

That supporting cast should ease the transition.

The Knights do not need their new quarterback to carry the offense immediately.

They need sound decision-making, ball security and the ability to capitalize when defenses crowd the line of scrimmage.

A productive ground game should create opportunities through play-action.

With Gray and Smith commanding attention, North Penn’s receivers may find favorable matchups downfield.

The quarterback competition will likely focus on command of the offense, accuracy and composure.

Whoever earns the position will benefit from playing alongside veterans who understand the expectations of championship football.

Rittenhouse and Colella Lead Receiving Corps

Senior Will Rittenhouse and senior Sal Colella return at wide receiver.

Their experience will be valuable for a new quarterback.

Rittenhouse gives North Penn a physical target at 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds.

His size should make him effective on intermediate routes, contested catches and red-zone opportunities.

Colella brings versatility and toughness.

He can contribute as a receiver, blocker and defensive back.

The Knights will need both seniors to become dependable options in the passing game.

North Penn’s offensive identity may begin with the run, but balance will be essential against the strongest teams in District 1.

If Rittenhouse and Colella consistently win one-on-one matchups, the offense will become much harder to defend.

Their willingness to block on the perimeter will also help Gray and Smith create longer runs.

Ashley Anchors Offensive Line

Senior Charles Ashley returns as the most experienced member of North Penn’s offensive line.

At 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, Ashley possesses the size and length to become a leader up front.

The Knights want their running game to set the tone, placing significant responsibility on the offensive line.

Ashley will be expected to help younger linemen develop while providing consistency at his own position.

Communication will be especially important with a new quarterback directing the offense.

North Penn must avoid missed assignments, penalties and negative plays.

The line does not need to dominate every snap, but it must create enough movement for Gray and Smith to remain productive.

If Ashley helps stabilize the group, the Knights should once again field one of the area’s most physical rushing attacks.

Offense Will Lean on Proven Formula

North Penn’s offensive outlook is straightforward.

Run the football, control possession and take advantage of play-action opportunities.

That approach fits the returning personnel.

Gray is a proven 1,000-yard runner, Smith adds explosiveness and the receiving corps includes two experienced seniors.

The biggest questions involve quarterback and offensive line depth.

The Knights must develop consistency at those positions without placing too much pressure on inexperienced players.

North Penn showed last season that it can win in different ways.

The Knights scored 40 or more points six times, but they also won defensive battles against Pennsbury and Pennridge.

The offense does not need to become one-dimensional.

It needs to remain efficient and protect the football.

If the running game performs as expected, the rest of the offense should have time to develop.

Defensive Front Features Experience

North Penn returns several experienced players along the defensive line.

Senior Tycho Bueters, junior Jamal Bell and senior Jacob Garret give the Knights a solid foundation up front.

Bell brings impressive size at 6-foot and 275 pounds and can become a disruptive presence in the middle.

His ability to occupy blockers should create opportunities for the linebackers behind him.

Bueters and Garret provide experience and athleticism on the edges.

The defensive front must help replace production lost from last year’s championship team.

North Penn’s defense was particularly effective during the second half of the season, holding four straight playoff opponents to 14 points or fewer.

Maintaining that standard begins with controlling the line of scrimmage.

If the front consistently stops the run and pressures quarterbacks, the younger defenders behind it will be placed in much better situations.

Experienced Secondary Leads Defense

North Penn returns three starters in the secondary, including Colella, Gray and Smith.

That experience should become one of the defense’s greatest strengths.

Colella and Gray bring senior leadership and understand the demands of playoff football.

Both are physical enough to support the run while also handling coverage responsibilities.

Smith adds speed and athleticism.

The Knights should be capable of matching up with talented receivers and creating turnovers.

Strong secondary play will also allow the defensive staff to become more aggressive with pressure packages.

The group must communicate well and limit explosive plays.

North Penn faced several dangerous passing offenses last season, and that experience should help the returning defensive backs recognize formations and route concepts more quickly.

With new starters expected elsewhere, the secondary will be responsible for setting the defensive tone.

Gray’s Two-Way Impact

Gray’s role in the secondary makes him even more valuable.

Few players can handle a significant rushing workload while also playing at a high level defensively.

His experience helps stabilize the back end of the defense.

Gray understands situational football and has already played in numerous high-pressure games.

That composure will be important when North Penn faces close contests.

The coaching staff will need to manage his snaps, but Gray’s presence gives the Knights a proven leader on both sides of the ball.

Defense Must Build Around Returning Core

North Penn’s defense will feature several new starters, but the returning foundation is strong.

The front includes Bueters, Bell and Garret.

The secondary welcomes back Colella, Gray and Smith.

The biggest challenge will be developing the linebacking corps and filling the remaining spots around those veterans.

The Knights want to remain physical and disciplined.

Last season’s playoff success was built on strong defense.

North Penn held Souderton to 14 points, Neshaminy to seven and Pennridge to 14 during its district championship run.

That level of performance created favorable situations for the offense and allowed the Knights to control games.

The new defense must continue that identity.

Tackling, third-down execution and limiting explosive plays will determine how quickly the unit develops.

If the younger players adjust quickly, North Penn should remain one of District 1’s better defensive teams.

Special Teams Will Be Important in Close Games

North Penn did not provide specific returning special teams starters, making the kicking and return competitions important areas to watch during camp.

The Knights played several close games last season.

They defeated Council Rock South by seven, Neshaminy in the district semifinals after losing by four during the regular season and Pennridge by seven in the district final.

In games like those, special teams can make the difference.

North Penn must identify dependable options at kicker, punter and returner.

Field position will be especially valuable while the offense develops a new quarterback.

The Knights cannot afford penalties or breakdowns in coverage.

Strong special teams would complement the running game and experienced secondary while giving North Penn another way to control tempo.

Players to Watch

Rylei Gray, Sr., RB/DB: Three-year starter who rushed for 1,196 yards and 15 touchdowns. He will be the centerpiece of the offense and a leader in the secondary.

Ziyon Smith, Jr., RB/DB: Explosive two-way athlete expected to share the rushing workload and contribute in the defensive backfield.

Sal Colella, Sr., WR/DB: Veteran two-way player who provides experience, toughness and versatility.

Will Rittenhouse, Sr., WR: Physical senior receiver expected to become a primary target for North Penn’s new quarterback.

Charles Ashley, Sr., OL: Experienced offensive lineman who will be responsible for helping lead a developing front.

Tycho Bueters, Sr., DL: Returning defensive lineman expected to provide leadership and pressure off the edge.

Jamal Bell, Jr., DL: Powerful interior defender with the size to control gaps and occupy multiple blockers.

Jacob Garret, Sr., DL: Veteran defensive lineman who gives North Penn additional experience up front.

My thoughts on North Penn

North Penn enters the 2026 season with several important questions but enough returning talent to remain a championship contender.

The Knights must replace key contributors from a team that won the District 1 Class 6A title and reached the state semifinals.

The quarterback position will receive significant attention, and the offensive line must develop around Ashley.

Fortunately, the offense can lean on one of the area’s best backfields.

Gray is a proven standout, while Smith gives North Penn another explosive option.

Rittenhouse and Colella provide experience at receiver and should help the new quarterback settle into the offense.

Defensively, the Knights return a veteran secondary and multiple contributors along the line.

The development of the linebackers and remaining new starters will determine the unit’s ceiling.

North Penn’s 2025 season demonstrated the strength of the program.

The Knights recovered from early league losses, improved throughout the year and played their best football in November.

That experience should provide confidence entering 2026.

If the new quarterback manages the offense effectively, the offensive line creates room for Gray and Smith, and the defense develops around its experienced secondary, North Penn should again challenge for the Suburban One League National Conference title and make another serious run at the District 1 Class 6A championship.
