Downingtown East Returns Experienced Skill Group With Eyes on Another District Run
Downingtown East enters the 2026 season with many of the pieces needed to remain among the top programs in the Ches-Mont League and District 1 Class 6A.
The Cougars are coming off an 8-4 campaign that included eight victories, a first-round district playoff win over Spring-Ford and an appearance in the District 1 Class 6A quarterfinals. Downingtown East also earned one of its most impressive victories of the season when it shut out Coatesville, 15-0, in Ches-Mont League North Division play.
Head coach Michael Matta returns an experienced group at the skill positions, including senior quarterback Ethan Ellis, several versatile running backs and receivers, and two large, athletic tight ends.
The biggest questions are in the trenches.
Downingtown East must replace key contributors along both the offensive and defensive lines, and the development of those units could determine whether the Cougars take another step forward in 2026.
“We have a lot of skill guys and tight ends back,” the coaching staff said. “We will have to replace some offensive and defensive linemen. That, of course, will make the difference.”
If the Cougars can build reliable line play around their veteran playmakers, they should again be capable of competing for a division championship and making a deep postseason run.
Cougars Built Momentum During Eight-Win Season
Downingtown East’s 2025 season began with a 42-21 loss to North Penn, but the Cougars responded by winning five consecutive games.
They shut out Northeast and Boyertown, defeated Spring-Ford in a close nonleague matchup and scored 43 points against Great Valley and 51 against West Chester East.
Following a loss to West Chester Rustin, Downingtown East delivered one of its best defensive performances of the season against Coatesville. The Cougars blanked the Red Raiders, 15-0, before defeating Bishop Shanahan, 35-26.
A 22-14 loss to rival Downingtown West closed the regular season, but the Cougars earned another opportunity against Spring-Ford in the opening round of the District 1 playoffs.
Downingtown East won the rematch, 20-16, before its season ended with a 21-9 quarterfinal loss at Pennridge.
The Cougars showed they could compete with strong Class 6A opponents. The challenge in 2026 will be developing enough depth and consistency to remain at that level throughout the season.
Ellis Returns to Lead the Offense
Senior quarterback Ethan Ellis returns to direct an offense with considerable experience around him.
At 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds, Ellis brings varsity experience and an understanding of the system. His leadership will be especially important while the Cougars rebuild portions of the offensive line.
Downingtown East should have the personnel to give Ellis several options in the passing game.
The Cougars return size at tight end, speed at wide receiver and versatility in the backfield. That should allow the offense to adjust its approach depending on the opponent.
Ellis will be asked to make sound decisions, protect the football and distribute it efficiently.
With so many skill players returning, he should not need to force the offense through one target. Instead, Downingtown East can make defenses account for multiple formations and personnel groupings.
Sesay Creates Major Matchup Problems
Senior Abraham Sesay is one of the most intriguing returning players on the roster.
At 6-foot-6 and 235 pounds, Sesay gives the Cougars exceptional size at tight end. His frame creates matchup problems in the passing game, especially against smaller linebackers and defensive backs.
Sesay can become a valuable target in the middle of the field, in the red zone and on third down.
He also returns at outside linebacker, making him an important two-way contributor.
His length and athleticism can help him disrupt passing lanes, set the edge and pressure opposing quarterbacks.
Downingtown East will likely look for ways to take advantage of Sesay’s size on both sides of the football.
Schlacter Adds Power and Versatility
Senior Michael Schlacter also returns as a tight end, H-back and outside linebacker.
At 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, Schlacter gives the Cougars another physical presence who can line up in several positions.
As an H-back, he can lead block, align next to the quarterback or move across the formation. At tight end, he can help seal the edge and provide another receiving option.
His versatility allows Downingtown East to change formations without substituting.
Defensively, Schlacter brings size and experience to the outside linebacker position. He should be an important part of the Cougars’ effort to replace production along the defensive front.
The combination of Sesay and Schlacter gives the offense one of the largest and most versatile tight end groups in the area.
Robinson and Morrison Strengthen Backfield
Junior Julez Robinson returns at halfback after gaining valuable varsity experience.
At 5-foot-9 and 165 pounds, Robinson brings quickness and the ability to make plays in space. He should have an opportunity to take on a larger role in the running game and as a receiver out of the backfield.
Senior fullback Linc Morrison gives the Cougars a more physical option.
Morrison can lead block, handle short-yardage carries and contribute in pass protection. His presence fits well with a multiple offense that can use larger personnel groups.
Together, Robinson and Morrison give Downingtown East different running styles.
Robinson can attack the perimeter and create explosive plays, while Morrison can help establish a physical inside running game.
Their effectiveness will depend heavily on how quickly the rebuilt offensive line develops.
Miller Brings Experience on Both Sides
Junior Madden Miller returns at wide receiver and defensive back.
Miller’s two-way experience makes him one of the most valuable athletes on the roster.
Offensively, he gives Ellis a returning target capable of working from the perimeter or slot. His speed and route-running will be important as the Cougars attempt to stretch the field and create space for their tight ends.
Defensively, Miller adds experience to a secondary that also returns Dylan Benjamin, Shane Keenan and Charlie Mapes at linebacker.
His ability to contribute in multiple phases should keep him on the field in key situations.
Offensive Line Development Will Be Critical
Downingtown East returns senior Sri Mallina, senior Ishaan Jaie and sophomore Will Maffei along the offensive line.
Mallina, listed at 6-foot-2 and 265 pounds, gives the unit size and senior leadership.
Jaie brings another experienced body at 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, while Maffei gained valuable experience early in his career and could become an important long-term piece.
The Cougars must identify additional starters and develop reliable depth.
That process will be one of the defining storylines of the preseason.
Downingtown East has enough skill-position talent to create problems for opponents, but that talent can only flourish if the line protects Ellis and creates consistent running lanes.
Communication will be especially important against aggressive Ches-Mont defensive fronts.
If the new group comes together quickly, the offense should have the balance and versatility to be productive.
Offense Can Use Multiple Looks
The returning personnel gives Downingtown East the flexibility to play several different styles.
With Sesay and Schlacter, the Cougars can use two-tight-end sets and create a physical running attack.
With Miller and Robinson, they can spread the field and force defenders to tackle in space.
Morrison provides the option of using a fullback, while Ellis gives the offense an experienced quarterback capable of managing those different packages.
The Cougars do not need to rely on one offensive identity every week.
They can tailor their game plan to the opponent.
That versatility could become a major advantage, particularly if the offensive line gains confidence as the season progresses.
Defense Returns Experience at Every Level
Although Downingtown East must replace several defensive linemen, the Cougars return experienced players at linebacker and in the secondary.
Senior Charlie Mapes returns at inside linebacker. Despite being listed at 5-foot-10 and 160 pounds, Mapes brings varsity experience and should help organize the middle of the defense.
Sesay and Schlacter return at outside linebacker, giving the Cougars size and athleticism on the edges.
Junior Colin Smith returns at defensive end and should play an important role up front.
The secondary brings back Benjamin, Keenan and Miller, providing continuity in coverage.
That experience should help Downingtown East manage the transition along the defensive line.
Smith Becomes Key Piece Up Front
Junior Colin Smith is one of the most important returning players on the defense.
At 6-foot-1 and 235 pounds, Smith has the size to play physically against the run while also creating pressure from the edge.
With the Cougars replacing defensive linemen, Smith will be expected to take on greater responsibility.
He must help set the tone at the line of scrimmage and provide leadership for younger players entering the rotation.
Downingtown East’s ability to stop the run will depend on how well Smith and the new linemen control gaps and avoid allowing blockers to reach the linebackers.
If Smith develops into a disruptive presence, it would make the transition much easier for the entire defense.
Mapes Leads the Middle
Mapes returns at inside linebacker and should become one of the primary communicators on defense.
His responsibilities will include making checks, aligning the front and helping younger defenders understand their assignments.
The Cougars have experience around him, particularly with Sesay and Schlacter on the outside.
That group gives Downingtown East athleticism and versatility at linebacker.
They can defend the run, pressure quarterbacks and drop into coverage depending on the situation.
The linebackers will need to play disciplined football while the new defensive line develops.
Veteran Secondary Provides Stability
Senior Dylan Benjamin, senior Shane Keenan and junior Madden Miller return in the secondary.
Their experience should be one of the defense’s greatest strengths.
Benjamin and Miller provide versatility, while Keenan returns at cornerback after gaining important varsity experience.
The Cougars will rely on the secondary to communicate, prevent explosive plays and give the defensive front time to create pressure.
With several returning defensive backs, Downingtown East should be able to use multiple coverage packages.
That flexibility will be valuable against the wide range of offenses found throughout District 1.
Defense Showed Shutout Potential
Downingtown East produced three shutouts last season.
The Cougars held Northeast, Boyertown and Coatesville scoreless, demonstrating their ability to dominate when all three levels played together.
The 15-0 victory over Coatesville was especially significant because it came against a division opponent with a traditionally explosive offense.
Those performances provide a model for the 2026 defense.
The Cougars want to play with discipline, limit explosive gains and force opponents to sustain long drives.
The returning linebackers and defensive backs understand what that level of execution requires.
The new defensive linemen must now grow into their roles.
Selden Gives Special Teams Stability
Senior Paul Selden returns as the kicker.
His experience provides an important advantage in close games.
Downingtown East played several one-score contests last season, including victories over Spring-Ford and a competitive playoff loss to Pennridge.
A dependable kicker can make a major difference in those situations.
Selden’s return should allow the Cougars to enter the season with confidence in field goals, extra points and kickoffs.
The coaching staff also noted that the Cougars return their kickers, giving the special teams units valuable continuity.
Coverage and return roles will still need to be finalized, but the kicking game should be a strength.

Abraham Sesay, Sr., TE/OLB: Massive two-way athlete who creates matchup problems on offense and provides length on defense.

My thoughts on Downingtown East
Downingtown East enters 2026 with enough experience and athleticism to remain a serious contender in the Ches-Mont League North Division and District 1 Class 6A.
The Cougars return their quarterback, several skill-position players, two imposing tight ends and a veteran secondary.
Their biggest concern is in the trenches.
The offensive line must protect Ellis and create room for Robinson and Morrison. The defensive line must replace departed contributors while allowing the experienced linebackers to play freely.
Those units will likely determine the ceiling of the team.
If Mallina, Jaie, Maffei and the new offensive linemen develop into a cohesive group, Downingtown East should be able to use its size and versatility to create a balanced attack.
If Smith and the new defensive linemen provide steady play, the Cougars’ experienced linebackers and secondary should make the defense difficult to break down.
The Ches-Mont North will again be competitive, with Coatesville, Bishop Shanahan and rival Downingtown West providing demanding tests.
Downingtown East proved last season that it can beat strong opponents and win postseason games.
The Cougars now want to build on that success.
With veteran playmakers, reliable special teams and a physical identity, Downingtown East has the opportunity to produce another winning season and challenge for a deeper run in the District 1 Class 6A playoffs.
