Thank you for that most lucid and complete discussion on your post of 10/23 – 1:53 PM. I enjoy all of the discussion very much on this site and posts. I have almost always lived in District One and so it is my focus, but I have no problem celebrating the success of other districts, other leagues (I of course follow Suburban One), and other teams. If I can help you with a D1 question I will be glad to do so; but my other focus is mainly on the history of the sport and seeing current year games. Thanks again, and keep posting. Incidently, I depend on the Ted Silary site for my D12 info also, and I had the pleasure of meeting Ted recently at a Wood game at Tennent.

  2. Just asking a ? here. Why is everybody on here always talking about NORTH PENN. Come on guys there’s plenty on teams to talk about besides NORTH PENN. They are a very good school and also good at football. Its the same thing about SJP and LASALLE, you people think they are the best teams ever and can beat every team in the state. How about sometime we give some credit to some other teams on here that are doing good or being coached well or got some big kids and are going to a big school. There is a lot more to talk about in high school football then these 3 teams. Just throwing that out there, I like reading about football and like hearing whats going on but tired of the same TALK … Thanks football fans .. and only 2 weeks till playoffs so we will see what happens. LETS GO MANHEIM CENTRAL BARONS .

  3. Holy smokes Ray! That comment holds the record for longest run-on sentence this year. I think you had some good points in there, but a very tough read. Gotta get my eyes to adjust back from all of them caps. No more red bull, no more caffeine tonight. I’m actually pretty disappointed. Looking at all of the info and stats, I’m sure there is some good stuff there. I just can’t make heads or tails of it.

  4. @ Buddy
Yeah, I hope NP schedules some other teams next year at the beginning of the season. Originally I thought it was great but it’s starting to get old. It’s the same old same old, an opening day thumping to LaSalle. NP keeps it fairly close in the first half, then LaSalle comes out in the second half and starts to surge, winning by 2 to 3 TDs. Like I said before, maybe LaSalle might want to look for a different opening game on their end too.

  5. @ O L Coach

Right you are; never thought of that factor. But this year as it stands, 180 points shows the big difference in the award of points for teams you lose to; compared to getting no points for a loss. In reality, D1 awards 10 points for playing the game, because the loser does get the winner’s 10. Thanks for the input on a facet I neglected.

  6. @Kmac
The probably 0-8 thing was a jab at another commenter on here. There is a kid on here who’s favorite uncle, grandpa, or maybe dad might be the D1 commissioner. He is also not a fan of NP. The 3 games they play to open their season were brought up and he said the 3 losses did nothing to help them with their current success, it was too devastating to take anything positive out of it. NP is really down this year, they started this year with mostly all new players with no experience. I questioned the young man, with a bit of satire thrown in, how they could possibly have won their next 5 games after that? Just getting under the kids skin.
If NP played in D12, I think they would be undefeated in league play. Being a public AAAA school, the 3 games to open the season wouldn’t count in league play. They wouldn’t play Judge (CL), Imhotep (AA), or West (AA CL) in games that count. I really have limited knowledge on district 1. I try to find out everything I can, but there is no site like Silary for D1. We in D12 know NP a little better than other teams out there because they take on our top tier to open their season. So in summation, I think NP would have the same exact record in D12, right now, that they do in D1. It’s just fun messing with the kid.

  7. @Kmac, NP wouldn’t lose 180 points because they would pick up points from the opponents they played in lieu of the 3 PCL squads.

  8. @JiveTurkey

Interesting comments on North Penn and District One. On the “probably would be 0-8” thing. Say NP was playing 8 D12 schools, and give them the 3 losses they did have. I can easily see Judge and Imhotep, the 2A school with 4A numbers, size, coaching, and athletes, as two more losses. But who else in D12 would beat them? Roman? They have a D1 loss to D’Town East (4-4). Frankford has two losses to D1 opponents. Washington lost to 3A W C Henderson. West Catholic? I saw them at Wood, and there was no comparison that day against 3A, less 4A? Not arguing the logic or comment, but see what I am getting at?

  9. @Pub School
After rereading my post on the point system, I realize it came off kinda harsh. That was not my intention at all, all for that I apologize. I never knew about a point system until last basketball season. Usually Neumann is the top dog in the Catholic League, Prep, Roman, and another team from here or there will give them a bit of a run. Neumann is AAA. So Roman finishes their league schedule 12-1, only loss to Neumann. Prep finishes 11-2, losses to Neumann and Roman. Playoff time! Roman vs Prep in the CL semis down at the Palestra. Prep wins, then goes on to lose again to Neumann. So Neumann plays Imhotep for the D12 AAA one seed and Prep plays King for the AAAA one seed, right? Nope, Roman gets to play for the AAAA one seed because Prep lost to Neumann in finals, and the points system changed final standings with the loss. In essence the playoff game meant nothing. That’s why I don’t like anything about the points system. If a team goes 2-12, sneaks into the playoffs somehow, and wins the league title do you say give us our trophy back because that team over there has more schedule points?
I hate to keep kicking the same horse, but North Penn is gonna be 5-2, at worst, in league play. Will a team with a worse league record get in over them? If that happens to be the case, why have a league in the first place?

  10. @ Jive

They ( NP) AREN’T playing in a weak district, they are playing in a weak conference within that district. Next year they re-align, they then will be playing the likes of Neshaminy, Pennsbury etc., far from weak schools.

    @ O L

I doubt that NP will change their non-league schedule next year or the following. I believe Beck wants that schedule, albeit embarrassing sometimes.

  11. @Jive

Good points concerning D12 playoffs. Other divisions should take the same approach. There was a situation 2 years ago where in D11 Allentown CC almost missed the playoffs because of a difficult AAAA schedule and they made it all the way to face Wood in the Eastern final.

  12. Yo Jive-

Not my point system in PPL or PCL. They shouldn’t publish points if they don’t mean anything and they dont use them. I was just asking cause I was curious. Now I know why they don’t use them. It is obvious bro. It is now clear to me. Thanks for the education.

  13. Due to league realignment next season where the large SOL schools will be scheduling eachother and increasing the difficulty of their schedules, it is doubtful that NP can continue to schedule the level of NL competition they are known for.

  14. @17th
I agree with Buddy (shocker). North Penn is not very good this year, and them 3 losses proved what they are. If they weren’t fortunate enough to be playing in D1, they would probably be 0-8. Really a down year, like Buddy said, but they are undefeated in D1. No experience on their team and they got demolished by them 3 D12 opponents. I’m sure they just packed it in and gave up. Just lucky to be playing in such a weak district that they are undefeated in district play. Beck had to start with all new players this year, like Buddy said, but did I mention that they are undefeated in D1?

  15. @ 17th & G

Yes, Beck will keep the same killer schedule he has now if allowed.
I don’t really think those first 3 loses contribute very much to his current success. They were a bit too devastating.
NP is really down this year. Most of the experience players from last year graduated.
He had to start with mostly all new players. They’ll be back, will take a couple of years I suspect.

  16. @ 17th & G and others

I agree with your closing statement about NP’s schedule. They have 180 more points due to the wins of LaSalle, St. Joe’s and Wood. That’s like beating a 4A opponent with 8 wins. The Knights are in the playoffs now at 880 points currently in 14th spot. Take away the 180 points and their 700 would have them at the bottom of the list in 27th place. What a difference awarding all of the winning team’s points for a loss has made.

  17. I have more respect for Beck and the NP program then most of the other non-catholic programs out there! I would love to see NP’s success rate in week 4 after they go through the 3 out of conference games to start the season. I don’t know the success failure rate but my guess would be that it is overwhelmingly a success.

I don’t know what happened this year with the 3 loss start but I am under the impression the Knights were inexperienced this preseason. My question is, would Beck attribute some of his present success to those three September losses. Another question, if the PIAA keeps the present point system in place, does Beck keep his present schedule? My thoughts are yes!

  18. @phillyboy

You’re right. Not sure how beneficial it is getting creamed the first 3 games of the season for North Penn helps. These kids confidence is got to be shattered after that.

    OL coach

NP GOT to win out ( 2 games left). Problem is this week at CB West. Can’t count on it yet.

  19. @pub school, please don’t ask me to explain anything PPL related. I can only assume coleman and D12 agreed to give the top 2 finishers in their big school group a week off maybe to extend the PPL season another week, who knows. It is the PPL.

  20. Neither the Catholic nor public leagues in Philadelphia use a point system. Divisions are based on past success. The Gold division has 4 teams make the playoffs, and the silver 2. First two in gold get a bye and 1S vs 4G, 2S vs 3G. Let’s take a look at your point system. Ryan, who hasn’t won a league game and will not make the playoffs, is ahead of Roman and Judge. Roman and Judge both beat Ryan. Southern plays in the Silver (Joke) division, 3rd in AAAA D12? That is why D12 doesn’t use the ranking system, it’s not too accurate. Is head to head an easier way to decide which team is better, or should we say a team like Ryan, who played 4 terrible teams to start their season and pad their record, deserves a playoff spot with zero league wins?

  21. Agree that NP deserves respect for the tough opening schedule, as long as they are somewhat competitive. If they keep getting creamed 49-3 and all, maybe they should consider pulling a “Ridley” and take it steady. Otherwise, it’s not the best thing for a team’s confidence to start out each year with 3 blowout losses. Maybe it’s not a trend, maybe it’s just a down cycle for NP. At any rate, maybe LaSalle, SJP and Wood could schedule other top D1 or D11 opponents that are perceived to have a promising upcoming year.
