Upper Dublin’s Kim Honored with 26th Jim Henry Award

Maxwell Football Club (MFC) President Ron Jaworski announced tonight that Bill Kim, a senior from Upper Dublin High School, is the winner of the MFC’s 26th annual Jim Henry Award. Jaworski made the announcement at the conclusion of tonight’s Jim Henry Award banquet, held at Drexelbrook Country Club in Drexel Hill.

In addition, the MFC honored all 60 Henry finalists with Mini-Max trophies. The Mini-Maxes are awarded to the region’s top senior football players who have also succeeded academically.

“This year saw a record number of applicants for the Jim Henry Award and revealed the extraordinary character of some of our students,” commented Jaworski. “Bill Kim, with his accomplishments on the gridiron and in the classroom, is one of those extraordinary students. He has set the groundwork not just for future success in football, but in life as well.”

An All-American football player at Villanova, Jim Henry crossed Big Five lines to serve as La Salle’s athletic director from 1945 until his 1969 retirement. He served as a Vice President, and a Board Member of the Maxwell Football Club for well over a decade, before his passing in 1990.

The Jim Henry Award is presented to the Delaware Valley high school senior who best represents football prowess, academic excellence and dedicated community service. Past winners include NFL alumni Shawn Wooden (Abington High School) and Dan Connor (Strath Haven High School). Last year’s winner, Conestoga linebacker Brad Herzlich, suited up for Brown University this fall.

Kim was an unequivocal winner on and off of the football field. A middle linebacker and offensive guard, Kim helped to guide Upper Dublin to a 7-3 season, a conference championship and a berth in the District One playoffs. He earned first team All-SOL American honors on both sides of the football in the process. As Upper Dublin’s captain, Kim recorded 91 tackles, a sack, a fumble recovery and two pass break ups. Six times, Upper Dublin’s defense held opponents to under 15 points.

In the classroom, Kim broke 700 on all three sections of the SAT and carried a 4.7 weighted GPA. He has taken nearly 20 honors and AP courses. Kim serves as the Treasurer of his student government; he is also involved in model United Nations, the Chess Club, Upper Dublin’s track team and the Asian Student Association, where he is President. Kim volunteers at the Upper Dublin Public Library and his church youth group.

Kim is the third winner from the Suburban One League, and the very first from the SOL American Conference.

The formal presentation of the Henry Award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club’s Awards Dinner on Friday, March 4, 2011 at the Harrah’s Entertainment Complex in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Tickets can for the National Dinner can be obtained via the club’s website: Maxwell Football Club
