Mazonkey & Northwest Start 3-0
It wasn’t too long ago that Northwest High School was looked at as a nonfactor in football circles. However, Coach Carl Majer has made a difference in the way the Rangers are viewed since he took over the program in 2008.
Northwest shut out Holy Cross this evening, 42-0, to begin the 2013 season with a 3-0 mark. The Rangers’ unbeaten start is their first since 2004. Coach Majer’s group has won their last four home openers by scoring 38-points or more in each contest.
Tonight, Austin Mazonkey totalled 246 yards and scored 3 times for the Rangers. Mazonkey took the second play from scrimmage and went 63-yards to pay dirt.
NW – Austin Mazonkey, 63-yard TD run (7-0)
NW – Nick Long, 45-yard punt return (14-0)
NW – Austin Mazonkey, 46-yard TD catch (21-0)
NW – Austin Mazonkey, 45-yard TD run (28-0)
NW – Eric Gurzynski, 12-yard TD catch (35-0)
NW – Jeremy Walsh, 70-yard TD run (42-0)
The game marked the first time which Carl Majer was able to return to the sidelines as the Rangers’ head coach. He had served a two-game suspension for using an ineligible player last year.
In their last three meetings, Northwest has outscored the Crusaders 117-0. Holy Cross falls to 0-3. First-year head coach Josh Watters inherited a team which had not won a game in twelve consecutive contests entering this season. The Crusaders now fall to 0-3.
Next week, Northwest will host G.A.R. while Holy Cross returns home to take on Mid Valley.
