minimaxaward-shurmurDREXEL HILL – Maxwell Football Club President, Ron Jaworski, announced Thursday night that Kyle Shurmur, a senior from LaSalle College high school, was recognized as the Pennsylvania Player of the Year. “It’s a great honor to win this award and be apart of this club and to be around all these great players and great people is a great honor,” said Shurmur.

This took place at the Club’s 30th annual awards dinner at Drexelbrook Country Club in Drexel Hill. In addition, the Maxwell Football Club honored 61 Henry finalists with Mini-Max trophies.

The Mini-Max is awarded to the region’s top senior football players. The region is made up of players from District 1,3,11,12 and Independent schools.

Kyle became the second player from LaSalle College High School to win this award. Brett Gordon won the award in 1997. Brett went on to play quarterback at Villanova and is currently an offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at LaSalle.

“Kyle learned a lot about the mental part of the game from Brett. That’s where hekyle-shurmur spent most of the time teaching Kyle the last two years,” said Gordon.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound senior will continue his career at Vanderbilt. He threw for over 2,500 yards and 28 touchdowns while helping the Explorers to an 8-3 record.

Kyle was a backup quarterback his sophomore year at St. Edward of Lakewood, Ohio, a powerhouse program. In his first year as a junior at LaSalle he threw for over 2,400 yards and 25 touchdowns.

“When he came to us he was a polished quarterback. He just got it. He has the “it” factor. He has the ability as a leader to get the other players to follow him because of his work ethic,” said Gordon.

Kyle has performed equally as well off the football field. He has a 4.28 GPA in a very demanding academic environment at LaSalle. He made the honor roll each marking period in high school and has completed seven advanced placement classes.

Kyle is also a top swimmer for LaSalle and has been recognized at the All-Catholic, All-State and All-American levels.

“This has been the best two years of my life here at LaSalle,” said Shurmur.

Shurmur is the son of Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur and is eligible for the Jim Henry Award. On Sunday, New Jersey will announce their player of the year and one of them will be chosen Jim Henry Award winner.

The winner of the Jim Henry Award will be recognized March 13th at the Tropicana Casino Resort in Atlantic City along with the Collegiate and Professional awards.
