Coaches Q&A with Dan Ellis:

Q. What are his strengths on offense?

A. He’s our tight end and at times we will move him to wide receiver. He’s a big kid, but he’s athletic enough that we can move him around on both sides of the ball.

Last year, we were a triple option offense and he wasn’t really used that much offensively. We’re going to use him as a weapon and look for match-ups and spots on the field and really try to take advantage of his skill set.

We may hand the ball at times and get him some carries. He’s a very good blocker and can catch the ball. He’s going to be a matchup nightmare for defenses this fall.

Q. What are his strengths on defense?

A. His main position is defensive end, but we will move him down to tackle. His best asset is the combination of things he does that make him so talented. He has the size, speed and athleticism.

He’s strong enough to take on double teams and he commands double teams. He’s very good at chasing down players at the backside of a play.

He’s a great pass rusher.

He had 10 sacks last year on a defense that wasn’t overly aggressive. This year we’re going to play a much more aggressive style of defense.

So, he’s really going to cause a lot of problems for teams. We’re going to move him around and do a lot of different things with him. I expect he’s going to have an outstanding year.

Q. Final thoughts on Ryan?

A. I am new here and in a short period of time I am very impressed with his leadership. He’s a great example to the young kids.

He’s a very humble kid and is a great young man.

If he’s that size now, he will probably be a MASSIVE physical presence at Penn State. With his very long arms, if he can keep his quicks he will be a nightmare to Big Ten offenses when he gets on the field. I could also see Penn State converting him to OT if he grows too much.
