HAZLETON – The Cavaliers played a near perfect game on both sides of the football and the Cavaliers beat Hazleton Area on the Cougars’ homecoming night 35-3.

East Stroudsburg South senior quarterback Robbie Moyer threw for 177 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 67 yards. Linebacker Sam Bergen led the Cavaliers defense that held the Cougars to just 120 yards. With the win the Cavaliers ended a six-game losing streak to Hazleton Area.

East Stroudsburg South Head coach Ed Christian said, “We were just outstanding against Hazleton. Offensively we moved the ball and we just played a complete game.”

The Cavaliers set the tone right from the opening drive, going 70 yards on nine plays for the score. Moyer’s 10-yard reverse run gave the Cavs the first score of the game. Moyer’s PAT attempt put the Cavs up 7-0.

Late in the first quarter Sean Connors recovered a Cougar fumble at the Hazleton Area 26 yard line. The Cavs would use seven plays and Colin Hegarty’s three-yard touchdown run put the Cavs up 14-0.

The Cougars would punt the ball right back to the Cavaliers. On the next drive Moyer completed passes of 29 and 28 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown pass to Dan Cason and the Cavaliers’ led 21-0 with 7:51 to go in the half.

The only points the Cougars would get all night came right before halftime. The Cougars put together a 16-play drive that took nearly eight minutes. Kicker Chad Nicholas hit a 30-yard field goal as time expired at halftime. The Cavs went into halftime with a 21-3 commanding lead.

The Cavaliers were never in danger the whole night. Christian said, “No matter what they did we had kids there to stop them. “

After a scoreless third quarter the Cavaliers would add to their lead. Moyer threw a dart to Connors for a 36-yard score and three minutes later Cason caught a three-yard pass from Moyer to put Hazleton Area out of reach.

Moyer completed 12 of 17 passes for 177 yards. Cason caught five passes for 73 yards and Connors caught three passes for 89 yards.

The Cavaliers (8-1) will end the regular season with East Stroudsburg North. They are currently the second seed in the District 2-4-11 Class 4A subregional rankings behind Easton Area. The Cavs lost to Easton Area week one 24-22.

Hazleton Area hosts Berwick Area next Friday night.

after being at that game last night. i feel that East Stroudsburg South should be in the top 10 in the state rankings. they were faster and bigger than the cougars and i feel they have a great chance of winning it all.
