The new elite in District One

The third week of 2011 revealed some new powerhouse teams that may be on their way to playoff success if they follow up on their early season performance. Pre- season favorites North Penn, Souderton. Ridley and Strath Haven have all tasted defeat and must now battle back to the top.

Some teams on the rise this season include Downingtown West, Coatesville, Springfield (DELCO) and Marple Newtown to name just a few. This week’s games may give us a clearer picture if these undefeated squads are for real.

The third week of the season was no easier to predict than week one and two. This writer’s record was a dismal 3-2 as Downingtown East, Monsignor Bonner and Bishop Shanahan won as predicted while Strath Haven and Souderton did not play to the script.

The last five years, this future teller has a 222-86 prognostication record while going 8-7 for this season.

This week finds another Central League showdown as the featured game to follow. The undefeated Marple Newtown Tigers sent some shock waves through the league with their decisive win over perennial league champion Strath Haven. This week Marple faces another Central League top gun when they venture to Ridley. The Green Raiders suffered a one point defeat at Conestoga last Friday and will be well prepared to avenge that experience. The Tigers will need a stellar defensive performance and hope that running back Cimirrow Moat can break the Green Raider defensive wall. Although Marple Newtown is in the rise it is not good business to pick against Ridley at home.

Ridley 23 Marple Newtown 21

The Next big game to watch is a battle of two undefeated teams as Coatesville visits Downingtown East. The Cougars will ride QB Kyle Lauletta and home field advantage to a hard fought win over the Red Raiders.

Downingtown East 38 Coatesville 28

The rest of this week’s fearless forecast:

Unionville 27 Bayard Rustin 21

Strath Haven 24 Garnet Valley 20

Abington 34 Neshaminy 27

Will look out for Drew Harris. Thanks for the comment.

Downingtown East will ride Drew Harris as it has done since his 10th grade year. The offense goes as he goes you stack the line the Qb will kill you, you try and play more honest and Drew will run for over 200 yards.
