West Perry used a punishing ground attack and several big plays to build an early advantage and went on to defeat York Suburban, 30-12, Friday night.
The Mustangs piled up 327 yards of total offense, including 249 on the ground, while jumping out to a 23-6 halftime lead. York Suburban controlled the football for more than 32 minutes but couldn’t consistently turn its possessions into points.
West Perry wasted little time getting on the scoreboard.
Mason Sprecher opened the scoring with a 20-yard touchdown run with 7:52 remaining in the first quarter. Drew Brandt’s extra point gave the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.
York Suburban answered quickly. Jake Blount connected with Zephyr Hoffman-Smith for a 36-yard touchdown with 6:40 remaining. The extra point failed, leaving West Perry in front, 7-6.

West Perry controls the ground game
The Mustangs continued to control the game behind Sprecher and their rushing attack.
Sprecher carried 29 times for 157 yards and a touchdown, accounting for more than half of West Perry’s rushing production. Landon Wilson added 85 yards on just eight carries, an average of 10.6 yards per attempt.
After a scoreless second quarter offensively, Brandt added to West Perry’s advantage as time expired in the first half. He connected on a 31-yard field goal, sending the Mustangs into halftime with a 23-6 lead.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, leaving York Suburban with work to do entering the final 12 minutes.
West Perry then delivered the play that essentially put the game away.
Wilson broke free for a 50-yard touchdown run with 5:12 remaining in the fourth quarter. Brandt added the extra point, stretching the Mustangs’ lead to 30-6.
York Suburban continued to battle and found the end zone again with 3:56 remaining when Blount connected with Hoffman-Smith for a 20-yard touchdown. The conversion attempt failed, producing the final 30-12 margin.
Sprecher leads productive Mustangs offense
Sprecher was the workhorse for West Perry, finishing with 157 yards on 29 carries. Wilson provided the explosive element with 85 yards on eight attempts, highlighted by his 50-yard fourth-quarter touchdown.
Fleisher attempted only seven passes but made one of his three completions count, finishing with 78 yards and the 60-yard touchdown to Etter. Etter caught two passes for 71 yards.
West Perry finished with 15 first downs and 327 total yards, averaging 5.1 yards on its 49 rushing attempts. The Mustangs ran 55 offensive plays.
York Suburban finished with 178 total yards, with 99 coming on the ground and 79 through the air. Blount led the Trojans’ rushing attack with 52 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, while Jack Lenzi added 42 yards on 14 attempts.
Blount completed 6 of 20 passes for 79 yards and two touchdowns. Hoffman-Smith was responsible for both scoring receptions, catching three passes for 61 yards.
West Perry’s defense also kept York Suburban from generating many explosive plays. Christian Laughman recorded a team-high seven tackles, while Quinten Palm and Mason Page each had six. Brandt finished with eight total tackles.
For York Suburban, Lenzi led the defense with 11 tackles, while James Barley recorded nine. Yohan Fackche had seven tackles and the Trojans’ lone sack.
Penalties were an issue for both teams. York Suburban was flagged eight times for 73 yards, while West Perry accumulated 14 penalties for 152 yards.
Despite those mistakes, West Perry’s ability to run the football and generate explosive scoring plays proved to be the difference. The Mustangs scored on plays of 20, 60 and 50 yards and built enough of a cushion to withstand York Suburban’s two touchdown passes.
