Springfield-Delco Looks to Build on Historic 14-Win Season
Few teams in Pennsylvania enjoyed a more memorable 2025 campaign than the Springfield-Delco Cougars.
Head coach Christopher Britton guided the Cougars to a remarkable 14-1 record, a Central League championship, the District 1 Class 5A title, and a trip to the PIAA Class 5A semifinals before their outstanding season came to an end against eventual state finalist Roman Catholic.
Now, Springfield-Delco enters the 2026 season with the challenge every successful program faces—replacing a talented senior class while maintaining the championship standard that has become the expectation.
Despite graduating several standout players, the Cougars return an experienced nucleus on both sides of the football and believe they have the leadership and talent to make another deep postseason run.
Championship Season Sets the Standard
Springfield-Delco proved throughout the 2025 season that it could win in every fashion imaginable.
The Cougars opened the year with an exciting 33-31 victory over Perkiomen Valley before rolling through the Central League with dominant wins over Lower Merion, Penncrest, Upper Darby, Harriton, Haverford, Radnor and Garnet Valley.
One of the signature moments of the regular season came in a hard-fought 10-7 victory over Strath Haven that secured an undefeated regular season.
The postseason only added to the Cougars’ impressive résumé.
Springfield defeated Upper Dublin, Penncrest, Strath Haven and Chester to capture the District 1 Class 5A championship before advancing to the PIAA semifinals.
The 14-win season established Springfield-Delco as one of the premier Class 5A programs in Pennsylvania.
Hopkins Takes the Reins
One of the biggest reasons for optimism entering 2026 is the return of junior quarterback John Hopkins.
The poised signal caller leads an offense that brings back much of its core from last season and is expected to take on an even larger leadership role.
Coach Britton believes Hopkins provides exactly what the offense needs.
“The identity remains rooted in a physical run game behind an experienced offensive line that consistently controls the line of scrimmage,” Britton said. “Leading the way is a quarterback who brings poise, leadership, and playmaking ability to the offense.”
Hopkins’ continued development should allow the Cougars to remain one of the most balanced offenses in the Central League.
Experienced Offensive Line Returns
Championship teams are often built in the trenches, and Springfield-Delco returns one of its greatest strengths up front.
Senior linemen Alex McGinnis, Zion Culbreth, Jaxon DeConti, and Shane Kilroy provide experience, toughness and continuity.
That veteran group will once again be expected to establish the running game while giving Hopkins plenty of time to operate in the passing game.
Replacing graduated linemen Michael Franks and Dom Stewart won’t be easy, but the returning veterans give the Cougars an excellent foundation.
Physical Running Game Remains Identity
The Cougars may have graduated standout running backs Luke Valerio, Tanner Coll, Evan Herzig and Brad Barber, but the running game remains the centerpiece of the offense.
Senior TJ Valletti returns as one of Springfield’s most versatile players, contributing at running back, linebacker and punter.
Senior Mike Neville also brings explosiveness to the backfield and perimeter after contributing on offense and defense a year ago.
With a veteran offensive line paving the way, Springfield expects its physical style of football to remain unchanged.
Veteran Defense Returns
While several defensive leaders graduated, Springfield-Delco welcomes back a unit loaded with experience.
The Cougars return starters at every level of the defense, giving the coaching staff confidence heading into another demanding Central League schedule.
Coach Britton expects this group to continue playing the aggressive brand of football that defined last year’s championship run.
“The defense returns many of its starters,” Britton said. “Built on physicality and discipline, this unit plays fast, attacks the football, and consistently controls the line of scrimmage. With experienced leaders at every level, the defense brings both confidence and cohesion to each game.”
Linebackers Set the Tone
The heart of Springfield’s defense resides at linebacker.
McGinnis and Valletti return after productive 2025 seasons and provide leadership in the middle of the defense.
Junior Sebastian Simone also steps into a larger role after gaining valuable varsity experience.
Their physical style allows Springfield to dictate the tempo while helping shut down opposing rushing attacks.
Secondary Loaded With Experience
The Cougars also feature one of the more experienced defensive backfields in District 1.
Senior Finn Delaney returns alongside Neville and Maddox Moleski, while junior Mike DePetris gives Springfield another athletic defensive back capable of making plays in coverage.
That experience should allow the Cougars to remain aggressive defensively while matching up against some of the Central League’s top passing attacks.
Defensive Front Looks Strong
The defensive line also returns significant experience.
Culbreth and junior Tommy Griffin anchor the interior after contributing during last year’s championship season.
Their ability to control the line of scrimmage will be critical as Springfield looks to replace several graduated defensive standouts.
If the front can generate consistent pressure, it will allow the experienced linebackers and secondary to create turnovers.
Special Teams Could Be Early Difference
Coach Britton believes special teams will once again play a major role in Springfield’s success.
“Special teams always plays a key role early in the season and it is key to success early in the season,” he said.
Senior Zarel Suarez returns as the placekicker, while Valletti handles punting duties, giving the Cougars experienced specialists entering the season.
Winning the field-position battle has long been a strength of Springfield’s program and should remain an important factor in close games.

Finn Delaney, Sr., WR/DB – Experienced defensive back who brings size and leadership to the secondary.

Zion Culbreth, Sr., OL/DL – Physical lineman who controls the trenches on both sides of the ball.
Jaxon DeConti, Sr., OL/DL – Veteran blocker expected to help lead the offensive front.

My thoughts on Springfield-Delco
Following a historic 14-1 season and a District 1 Class 5A championship, expectations remain high in Springfield.
While replacing several key seniors is never easy, the Cougars return an experienced quarterback, a veteran offensive line, playmakers on both sides of the ball and a defense loaded with returning starters.
If Hopkins continues his development and the physical running game remains a strength, Springfield has all the ingredients to once again challenge for a Central League title.
Defensively, experience, discipline and physicality should keep the Cougars among the top units in District 1.
With experienced leadership throughout the roster and a championship culture firmly established, Springfield-Delco enters 2026 with every intention of making another deep postseason run.
