Pen Argyl Looks to Blend Veteran Line Play With Young Talent in 2026
Pen Argyl enters the 2026 season looking to build on a strong seven-win campaign while replacing several of the players who helped drive last year’s success.
The Green Knights finished 7-4 in 2025, earned notable victories over Tamaqua, Palmerton, Wilson, Palisades, Salisbury, Catasauqua and rival Bangor, and reached the District 11 playoffs. Their season ended with a 35-27 loss to Minersville in the district quarterfinals, but the year showed that head coach Brady Mutton’s program is capable of competing with quality opponents throughout the region.
This fall, Pen Argyl will have a different look.
The Green Knights must replace several important starters, including Rocco DeCesare, Terrell Estes, Caiden Faust, Zach Metzgar, Jakob Pietraskiewicz and Mason Soos. Much of the offensive and defensive production from last season has graduated, leaving opportunities for a younger group to step into prominent roles.
The good news is that Pen Argyl returns experience where it matters most—along the offensive line, at wide receiver and in several key defensive positions.
Veteran Offensive Line Will Lead the Rebuild
Pen Argyl’s offense will be built around an experienced group up front.
Senior Alex Harper and juniors Lautaro Guajardo, Noah Murcelo and Jacob Thomas all return after receiving significant varsity playing time. That continuity should give the Green Knights a strong foundation as they break in new starters at several skill positions.
Returning four experienced linemen is especially important for an offense replacing much of its production. Their ability to create movement in the running game and provide dependable pass protection should help younger players settle into their roles.
The Green Knights will use the preseason to continue developing chemistry and determine the blocking combinations that best fit the roster.
If the line becomes a consistent strength, Pen Argyl should be able to maintain possession, establish the run and take pressure off its inexperienced skill players.
Beltran and Crespo Return as Proven Targets
Senior wide receivers Anthony Beltran and Chris Crespo give Pen Argyl two experienced playmakers on the perimeter.
Beltran caught 31 passes for 374 yards and two touchdowns last season. His production and varsity experience make him a likely focal point of the passing game.
Crespo added 12 receptions for 182 yards and three touchdowns. His ability to turn limited opportunities into scores showed that he can be a dangerous option when defenses focus too heavily on other players.
Together, Beltran and Crespo provide the Green Knights with dependable targets capable of creating separation and producing yards after the catch.
Their leadership will be important as Pen Argyl develops a new quarterback and replaces several offensive contributors.
New Backfield Must Emerge
One of the biggest questions entering the season is how Pen Argyl will replace its lost production in the backfield.
The Green Knights graduated several players who contributed heavily to the running game, leaving competition for carries and offensive roles throughout preseason camp.
Pen Argyl may need to rely on multiple young runners rather than one featured back. The development of that group will be critical to keeping the offense balanced.
A productive ground game would allow the Green Knights to take advantage of their experienced line while creating favorable opportunities for Beltran and Crespo in the passing game.
The coaching staff will continue evaluating personnel and searching for the combination that gives the offense the best balance of power, speed and versatility.
Offensive Identity Will Develop Through Camp
Pen Argyl does not enter the season with every offensive role already defined.
Instead, the Green Knights will use camp and the early portion of the schedule to determine how their young talent fits together.
The experienced offensive line should allow the coaching staff to remain patient. Pen Argyl can lean on its veteran blockers while developing new contributors at quarterback, running back and the remaining receiver positions.
Limiting mistakes will be especially important. Young offenses often experience growing pains, so protecting the football, avoiding penalties and staying ahead of the chains will be major priorities.
If the new starters develop quickly, Pen Argyl has enough experience around them to remain productive.
Accatino Anchors Defensive Front
Senior defensive end James Accatino returns as one of the Green Knights’ top defensive players.
Accatino recorded 41 tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks last season. His experience and production make him a natural leader for a defense replacing several key contributors.
Pen Argyl will count on Accatino to set the edge, pressure opposing quarterbacks and help younger linemen adjust to varsity football.
Harper also returns at defensive end, while Murcelo provides experience on the interior.
That group gives Pen Argyl proven players across the defensive front, but depth and consistency will need to develop throughout the season.
Secondary Returns Experience
The Green Knights return several experienced defensive backs.
Beltran and Crespo will contribute in the secondary in addition to their offensive roles. Crespo recorded two interceptions last season, showing his ability to make plays on the football.
Junior Joseph Kratz also returns after gaining valuable varsity experience.
That returning group should provide stability against the pass while Pen Argyl develops younger players in the front seven.
Communication will be essential. With several new starters expected on defense, the experienced defensive backs must help organize the unit, limit coverage breakdowns and prevent explosive plays.
Linebacker Competition Will Be Important
The linebacker group will be one of the major areas of competition during preseason camp.
Pen Argyl lost substantial production to graduation, and the Green Knights will need younger players to emerge as dependable tacklers in the middle of the defense.
The coaching staff wants the defense to develop as a complete unit rather than depend on a small number of returning starters.
Finding the right combinations at linebacker will be particularly important against the physical rushing attacks in the Colonial League.
The Green Knights need that group to play aggressively, fill gaps correctly and tackle consistently in space.
Defense Must Develop Chemistry
Pen Argyl returns pieces at every level, but the defense will still undergo a significant transition.
Accatino, Harper and Murcelo provide experience along the line. Beltran, Crespo and Pysher bring varsity experience to the secondary. The challenge will be connecting those groups with a new collection of linebackers and rotational players.
The coaching staff will emphasize communication, assignment discipline and team pursuit.
Like the offense, the defense may require time to find the combinations that work best. Improvement from week to week will be critical as younger players gain confidence.
Kotulka Provides Special Teams Stability
Senior Reid Kotulka gives Pen Argyl an experienced and reliable specialist.
Kotulka returns as the team’s kicker after handling kickoffs, extra points and field-goal attempts.
His consistency provides an important advantage for a team developing young players in other areas. Reliable kickoffs can help the coverage unit, while dependable extra-point and field-goal production could become decisive in close games.
Pen Argyl expects Kotulka to have a strong senior season and remain one of the most dependable pieces of the team.

My thoughts on Pen Argyl
Pen Argyl enters 2026 in a transitional season, but the Green Knights are not starting over.
The offense returns four experienced linemen and two proven receivers. The defense brings back productive players along the front and experienced defensive backs. Special teams will be anchored by one of the team’s most reliable returning contributors.
The biggest challenge will be replacing the production and leadership lost to graduation.
Young players must emerge at quarterback, running back, linebacker and several rotational positions. The Green Knights will need time to identify the right personnel combinations and develop chemistry on both sides of the football.
The schedule will test that young roster, particularly in a competitive Colonial League division. However, Pen Argyl’s veteran offensive line should allow the offense to remain physical, while its experienced secondary can provide stability on defense.
If the Green Knights protect the football, establish a dependable running game and develop their young defenders, they have the potential to remain competitive in District 11 Class 3A and return to the postseason.
