Berwick was in search of their third straight state championship while Blackhawk was seeking their first title in three tries. In 1992, the Bulldogs caged the Cougars for a 33-6 victory in the Class AAA final.

Leading by just five points (18-13) entering the final frame, Coach George Curry’s group just made a defensive stop on a 3rd and 7 run play by Trent Wissner, stopping #29 just inches short of the first down marker. Following an 18-yard punt, the Bulldogs marched down the field on four plays to score on a 24-yard run by Bryan Smith to give the Dawgs some breathing room, 24-13. After a 3-and-out by the Cougars, Berwick utilized a 7-play, 41-yard drive en route to a Jeremy Chapin 40-yard field goal.

Down 14, Blackhawk mounted one last gasp. Cougar quarterback Mike Arbogast was picked off by Jerry Superko, who returned the interception 73-yards to pay dirt to give the Bulldogs another championship and their 40th win in a row.

It was a game in which Blackhawk turned the ball over three times and allowed Berwick to recover a kickoff on their own 4-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Blackhawk’s wide out Mark Cokain fumbled a catch which was recovered by the Bulldogs’ leading tackler, Jeremiah Dyer. One play later, Bryan Smith scampered 12-yards for the game’s first score. Then, on the ensuing kickoff, the Cougars did not touch the ball and the hustling Dawgs were able to recover and set up another Smith six-pointer.
