Wyomissing’s Corey Unger making the most of his opportunity

Going into the season, the Wyomissing Area football team was considered one of the top 2A teams in the state. They had a lot of talent returning on both sides of the ball and are led by All-American linebacker Alex Anzalone.

But there was one player going into the 2012 season that knew he may have to watch from the sidelines. That player is quarterback Corey Unger. “It was tough knowing I may not be able to play another high school football again, ” said Unger.

Then came the decision about the playing this season. “I wasn’t even going to come out this season at all, ” said Unger. “But Coach Wolfrum talked to my dad and I and he said you are going to play college football next year and why take off a year. I wanted to do what ever I could to help the team during the season and I ran the scout team plays.”

Unger set many records while he was at Fleetwood. In three seasons there he passed for 4,109 yards. “He would have been our starting quarterback all year if he was eligible, ” said Wyomissing head football coach Bob Wolfrum. “When we found out he was going to be eligible we started to work him.”

Back in May, the District 3 committee voted 12-1 in support of Fleetwood. Fleetwood said Unger’s transfer was motivated by athletics rather than academics and the PIAA upheld the decision.

Unger transferred from Fleetwood to Wyomissing and was ruled ineligible to compete in athletics until December 1st. On that day he was able to suit up for the first time in 2012. This was against Danville in the state quarterfinal game.

“We wanted to get him a couple of series in his first game back, ” said Wolfrum. At quarterback he completed three of five passes for 24 yards.

With Unger at quarterback they can put Joe Cacchione at wide receiver. “He was an all-league receiver and he has been starting for us at receiver since he was a ninth grader. Now we have two good wide receivers on the field at the same time.”

Cacchione had one catch today. It was a 50-yard bomb from Unger that setup a touchdown right before halftime.

In his second game back against Imhotep Charter, he played most of the game at quarterback, completing five of seven passes for 119 yards and one touchdown. “It felt real good to come out and contribute to my team, ” said Unger.

Wyomissing defeated Imhotep Charter School Saturday afternoon 35-13 in a PIAA Class 2A game in Germantown. With the win, Wyomissing Area (15-0) moves on to play Aliquippa (15-0) next Saturday afternoon at Hersheypark Stadium.
