Don’t look now, but the Lehigh Valley will be able to lay claim to another Division-1 quarterback prospect in the Class of 2010.  The latest high-profile quarterback comes from the Easton area, and he plays for the Wilson Area Warriors.

Tyler Smith, a dual-threat quarterback with a strong right arm, has a pair of Division-1 college offers:  UCONN and Pitt.  Smith has also received interest from Illinois, Penn State, Rutgers, and Virginia.

As a sophomore, Smith had a productive year, throwing for 1,918 yards and 20 touchdowns.  Those numbers ballooned in 2008 to 2,952 yards and 35 touchdowns.

Smith helped lead Wilson to a 12-1 record, including the District 11 “AAA” championship.  The Warriors lost in the preliminary round of the PIAA interdistrict playoffs to Berwick, 13-6.  It was Wilson’s first state playoff game since the blue and gold defeated Jeannette to win the 2006 “AA” state championship.

Smith has thrown for 4,870 yards – just 2,130 yards shy of 7,000.  Smith predecessor, DJ Lenehan, finished his career with 7,742 passing yards, the second-highest total in the state.

No Pennsylvania school has ever had two consecutive quarterbacks surpass 7,000 career passing yards.  Only six quarterbacks have ever surpassed the 7,000 passing yard plateau.
