Unionville Stops Avon Grove In OT 21-20

“This is one that is going to stick in your crawl,” summed up Avon Grove Head Coach Marvin Dooley after star running back  Brandon Monk was stopped on the one yard line going for the win on a two point comversion by Tom Pancoast in overtime as Unionville won a rain soaked 21-20 Ches-Mont Cross Division game at Avon Grove Thursday nite,  spoiling  a nite that began by remembering Arick Price and Victoria Price, who were killed in a car accident following last Friday nite’s football game.

“In overtime, you’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t,” said Unionville Head Coach Pat Clark when asked if he was suprized that the Red Devils went for the win in the first overtime. “He’s their best player, we knew they were going to him and we got a good defensive stop,” he added.

Unionville (2-1) started with the ball first in overtime. A one yard run by Quarterback Connor Gades brought up second and nine on the nine yard line. Gades then found his favorite receiver of the nite Rick Kaiser for the nine yard touchdown. Norb Sax then added his third extra point as the Indians regained a 21-14 lead. Gades finished the nite 10 of 17 for 91 yards and two touchdown passes. Kaiser finished with five catches for 65 yards and the touchdown catch.

Avon Grove (2-1) stuffed the stat box in the first half enroute to a 14-7 halftime lead that could have been more.

Trailing 7-0 when Gades hit Doug Ott for a five yard touchdown pass, the Indians countered when Monk scampered 86 yards for a touchdown with 31 seconds left in the first quarter. Then on their first possession of the second quarter, Monk scored again on a five yard run with 9:43 left before halftime. Monk finished the nite with 204 yards on 23 yards. Thse second touchdown was set up when Kevin Barrows recovered a Gades fumble on the Unionville 21.

With the win, Unionville now opens division play as they take on 2 time defending division champion Bayard Rustin at home while Avon Grove travels up to Downingtown to take on upstart Bishop Shanahan in their division opener next Saturday Afternoon in the Eagles’ Nest.
