The fourth week of 2011 continued to prove that the new kids on the block are rising to the top. Coatesville, Springfield (Delco), Bayard Rustin and Abington keep showing that they mean business as the season fast approaches its mid-point.

Weather was again a factor as most games were pushed to Saturday after torrential rains overspread the area as game time approached on Friday night. The few games played may have been fun for the mud lovers but a quick look at attendance numbers indicate most fans found other activities more advisable.

The fourth week of the season has once again befuddled this humble prognosticator. This writer’s record was a dismal 2-3 as Ridley and Abington won as predicted while Strath Haven, Downingtown East and Unionville fell in hard fought contests.

The last five years, this future teller has a 224-89 prognostication record while going 10-10 for this season.

This week finds another Central League showdown as the featured game to follow. The undefeated Springfield Cougars host Central League rival Conestoga on Friday night. As stated earlier the Cougars are one of the new kids on the block that are charging forward with some early season success. The Conestoga Pioneers will be no push over. Their record of 3-1 includes a 21-20 victory over the Ridley Green Raiders and that is always considered an upset in the Central League. The Cougars finished 8-4 last season and behind QB Ryan Strain and running back Rob Murphy are well on their way to improving on that record. Springfield will pass this test.

Springfield 31 Conestoga 16

The next big game to watch involves the hard charging undefeated Red Raiders from Coatesville hosting the Unionville Indians. The Red Raiders are coming off a big Monday night win over Downingtown East and will follow the lead of running back Dae-Hon Cheung to another impressive win this week.

Coatesville 28 Unionville 12

The rest of this week’s fearless forecast:

Academy Park 35 Archbishop Carroll 19

Abington 41 Council Rock North 21

Archbishop Wood 38 Glen Mills 20
