The second week of the 2008 season is already upon us. There were only a few surprises in the opening week but none bigger than Penncrest’s sneak attack on perennial powerhouse Strath Haven. Penncrest had not defeated their cross town rival since 1987 and the Lions 14-0 win gives them possession of the coveted Media Bowl for the next year.

This weekend’s games could be affected by Tropical Storm Hanna, with heavy rain and high winds possible. It appears that Friday night’s games could be completed before the nasty weather begins.

Believe it or not the upset minded Penncrest Lions will be involved in another important Central League contest again this week. The Garnet Valley Jaguars ranked eighth in Ed Thomas’ Southeastern Pa Top Twenty travel to Penncest  in hopes of continuing their second straight march into the PIAA state playoffs.

This writer comes off a 50-17 prediction record for 2006 followed by a 55-19 record in 2007. The first week of 2008 prognostications went well with Ridley, Unionville, Cardinal O’Hara and Gateway all following the script with opening day victories as predicted. Penncrest fooled me once but a 4-1 record is not to bad a start.

It is now time for this weeks fearless forecast.

Prediction:    Garnet Valley 31  Penncest  14

The Lions are scrappy but they won’t fool me twice. Garnet Valley is loaded with talent and full of confidence after last years trip to the AAA finals at Hershey. Running Back Tim Keyser will not be denied as the Jaguars seek to make a run at the AAAA title and superiority in their new Central League home.

Prediction:   Strath Haven  21  Marple Newtown  17

The Panthers must return to the win column to have any hope of a successful season. Coach Kevin Clancy will have this team ready but the Tigers will not go down without scratching. Strath Haven wins with a late TD.

Prediction:    Interboro  24  Monsignor Bonner 7

The Bucks are ready to rumble after their late rally came up just short last week against Unionville. Coach Steve Lennox will not let this talented squad start the season 0-2.

Here is the rest of the fearless forecast:

Prediction:    North Penn  31  Lansdale Catholic  21

Prediction:    Souderton  21  Downingtown East  13
